Formula One Spanish Grand Prix live blog, race updates

Polesitter Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will form an all-Mercedes front row for tonight’s Spanish Grand Prix, but the German team thinks Max Verstappen is favourite to win back-to-back races. Follow The Roar for live race updates and a blog of the race at 11:10pm (AEST).

The Formula One world championship arrives at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after its historic Silverstone double-header. Typically a race held in May, this event will throw up a unique challenge for teams and drivers: the scorching-hot weather will again test the hardest of Pirelli’s tyres, as was the case for the past two weeks at Silverstone.

The 4.6-kilometre circuit is a demanding one, with its long loaded corners testing the downforce of the cars and putting all sorts of stress on the tyres. The grand prix’s 66 laps will be more challenging than ever before.

Championship leader Hamilton has turned Spain into a fortress for himself and the dominant Mercedes team, having won the last three consecutive races here, though his teammate, Bottas, had pole in 2019.

But after Verstappen and Red Bull Racing broke the German manufacturer’s streak of wins in 2020 last time out at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, the prospect of the Dutchman challenging Hamilton again seems likely if the tyre issues persist.

The 22-year-old has fond memories of his own in Barcelona. This circuit was the scene of his first race with Red Bull Racing in 2016, which also yielded a dream maiden Formula One victory.

Only 30 points behind Hamilton in the standings, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes Verstappen is a title threat.

Hamilton claimed pole by the slimmest of margins over Bottas, and with both – and indeed all of the top ten – starting on the same soft compound, the Finn admitted he would have to beat his teammate at the start if he’s in for a chance to win.

Third on the grid went to Verstappen, who’ll look to challenge the two leaders if tyre troubles plague them again.

Negative headlines continue around Racing Point, though they’ve been bolstered by the return of Sergio Perez, who at last returned a negative COVID-19 test during the week. They’ll hope to recoup the 15 points lost to the penalty they received last week or improperly designing brake ducts based on a design bought from Mercedes as the midfield tussle continues intensifying.

Mercedes look mighty again, but will their tyres hamper their race again?

With the championship beginning to heat up in more ways than one, be sure to tune in on The Roar for live blog coverage from 11:10pm (AEST) of what is looking to be an exciting Spanish Grand Prix.

RACE REPORT It was a Sunday afternoon cruise in Spain for Lewis Hamilton, winning his 88th career grand prix from pole position to extend his lead in the championship over Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas. In what was another race of tyre management for the front-runners, Hamilton ran unchallenged across the 66-laps via a two-stop strategy. During which the reigning world champion even chose himself to go onto the medium tyre in the final stint. The race was compromised at the start for his Mercedes teammate Bottas at the start, who got a poor getaway and was swamped by Verstappen and the two Racing Points heading into Turn 1. While Verstappen seemed out of reach for Bottas, pretty much for the entire race then – the Finn did quickly round up Lance Stroll to be back within the podium places. A soft tyre gamble in the second stint failed to yield anything for Bottas, who stopped for a third time on the penultimate lap for the medium compound en route to the fastest lap of the race. Racing Point split their strategies between Stroll and the returning Sergio Perez, with the latter left out on a one-stop strategy which was due to deliver fourth – if it wasn’t for a 5-second penalty for ignoring blue flags. This let two-stopping Stroll to take fourth, while finishing fifth on track. A contra strategy for Carlos Sainz too saw him finish a position higher than he qualified, in sixth. Taking on another set of soft tyres after his first pit-stop to make gains on the Racing Points and then solidified his top-six position with a switch to mediums in the final phase. Double points for McLaren, as Lando Norris bagged the final point in tenth after some spectacular battles with Charles Leclerc during the race and then a last lap challenge from Daniel Ricciardo. Leclerc unfortunately was the race’s only retirement, with his engine cutting off mid-corner. Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel endured another testy race for the Scuderia, starting eleventh and looking to have made ground on a one-stop strategy. Only for an earlier call for a second stop raised by his engineer much later in the race, when the four-time world champion believed they had nothing to lose. Seventh his best finish of the season since their sixth in Hungary. A hard tyre gamble for Alexander Albon also failed and saw the Red Bull driver struggle through traffic to recover the positions lost due to that early pit-stop. Ultimately they had to make a second stop in order to charge back up into the points for eighth, ahead of Pierre Gasly in the AlphaTauri who was stellar again.

This win for Hamilton is proof that hype generators will say any old rubbish. Of course Mercedes are on top. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

LEWIS HAMILTON WINS THE SPANISH GRAND PRIX! It's Max Verstappen who splits the Mercedes duo with another handsome podium for Red Bull. And Valtteri Bottas will finish a disappointing third, though bags an extra point for claiming the fastest lap of the race.

Lap 65/66: Bottas pits for a third time! Presumably just to get fastest lap and an extra point on a fresh set on mediums. Disappointing though that they couldn't get after Verstappen.

It's not great that only Hamilton, Verstappen and Bottas are going to finish on the lead lap is it?
