Portuguese Grand Prix: Formula 1 live race updates, blog

By Jawad Yaqub / Roar Guru

This rollercoaster of a 2020 Formula One season has brought us to the track dubbed the ‘rollercoaster’ itself, returning to Portugal for the first time since 1996 as part of the revised calendar. Join The Roar from 12:00am (AEDT) for live blog coverage of the Portuguese Grand Prix.

The famous Algarve circuit in Portimão will host its first Formula One race, with the 4.6km layout most famous for endurance racing and the now-defunct A1 Grand Prix category back in the day.

It is a track that combines high and low-speed corners, with plenty of undulation and corners with blind approaches. A circuit that’ll surely raise driver’s eyebrows across the 66-lap race today.

With no past form guide to base definitive predictions upon for this race, it is difficult to look past the almighty Mercedes team to edge closer to that historic seventh consecutive constructor’s championship.

They can actually wrap up the title today by finishing first and third if Red Bull fail to score any points.

Lewis Hamilton achieved his 91st career win last time out at the Nürburgring, equalling the great Michael Schumacher’s record for all-time victories in Formula One. The 35-year old can make that record his own this weekend.

While Valtteri Bottas was fastest in every other session, it was Hamilton who delivered a thrilling lap at the death of Q3 to claim pole by 0.102. Both drivers will start the race on the medium tyre, which seems to be the more comfortable compound this weekend.

Six points separate Racing Point, McLaren and Renault fighting for third in the constructor’s championship, in what should again be a tantalising midfield tussle. A strong result is needed for McLaren who’ve scored 18 points in the last three races to Renault’s 43.

Sergio Perez heads up that battle in qualifying in fifth, though both McLarens are line-astern on the fourth row of the grid. Both Renaults are further down in tenth and 11th.

Knowing that they won’t be racing for Haas in 2021, current duo Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen both will start at the bottom on the table, ahead of only Nicholas Latifi, while his Williams teammate George Russell made it into Q2 and was faster than Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari.

Whatever the outcome, we’re in for an exciting first-ever race at the Algarve. Be sure then to come on to The Roar from 12:00am AEDT for live blog coverage of the Portuguese Grand Prix.

A huge day as far as Lewis Hamilton becoming the new record holder in F1 for wins. A record that back in 2006, anyone watching Michael Schumacher reach 91 wins, would not have thought to be broken so soon! The championship rolls on though and we'll be returning to Imola, which was last seen on the F1 calendar back in 2006. It'll be a two day format, which'll be a first for the sport too so that will be intriguing to see. Until then, thank you for tuning in for this live blog on The Roar. Have a good rest of your day and good night!

Yep, time for fresh blood at AT, and an experienced #2 at RB, hopefully Hulk.

RACE REPORT It was another record-breaking day for Lewis Hamilton, who surpassed Michael Schumacher for all-time wins in Formula One, with a 92nd career win coming at the Portuguese Grand Prix. The first ever Formula One race at the Portimão circuit saw an exhilarating start, with both Mercedes cars despite leading through the first few corners – both struggling with getting their medium tyres up to temperature. This brought forward a surprise race leader in Carlos Sainz, who made a strong start from seventh on the soft tyre. Hamilton post-race cited getting oversteer at Turn 7 for being the reason for him falling behind initially. Contact between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez also saw the Racing Point fall down the order, while the Dutchman lost time to Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. By Lap 6, it was Bottas who lead the race again. A fast-starting Kimi Räikkönen from sixteenth also impressed on the soft tyre, to get up into sixth in the early laps, before he along with the other soft runners began to lose grip. Lap 20 saw Hamilton use the DRS down the pit-straight, which was a popular overtaking area, to take the lead of the race from Bottas. From there he didn’t yield all the way to the chequered flag, with the sole pit-stop coming on Lap 41. A whopping 25-seconds separated Hamilton from Bottas across the line, while Verstappen once again completed a lonely race after his early skirmish with Perez for a place on the podium. Also running a lonely, but impressive race in fourth was Charles Leclerc – staying out of trouble. Whilst it was behind where a three-way battle for fifth was decided on the final lap, as Pierre Gasly upset an excellent comeback drive from Perez. Sainz finished in between. Esteban Ocon ran long on the medium tyres in the first stint, all the way to Lap 53. The strategy for Renault paid off, in that the Frenchman finished in the points ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo – though they did fumble the pit-stop which could’ve potentially yielded a better result. Both Ferraris were in the points with Sebastian Vettel scoring a solitary point, passing Räikkönen who had ultimately run 54-laps on the medium tyre in his second stint. There was contact too between Lance Stroll and Lando Norris on Lap 18, which effectively ruined both drivers’ races. The Canadian was handed two 5-second penalties; one for the contact and one for track limits abuse – but in the end retired with damage to his car. Norris meanwhile settled for thirteenth, after a slow puncture forced an extra pit-stop.

Yes, it was reported that Marko phoned Hulk I think because Albon had returned an inconclusive Covid test.

The sad fact is you may like a driver but when it comes to a point where they have to go, they have to go.

Yes, I like him, but when they take a year out they’re never the same. I think he’s struggling to save his F1 career.

And I think it's Gasly for the other seat. Must remember that AT is now described as a sister team of RB, not a junior team so even if a driver is part of the RB driver programme, it may not be a given that they get a promotion (or in Gasly's case, re-promotion). From what Christian Horner's been saying, I think they're solely looking elsewhere and with Marko on the phone to Hulk during the Eifel Grand Prix, it's hard not to infer that he's an option.

He's been stuck ever since being demoted from Red Bull. I think he took a year out too.

Rumours are that AT are going with Yuki Tsunoda for 2021, having a Japanese driver for the Honda-powered car.
