Tokyo Olympics Day 13: Aussie wins track and field medal, as BEST EVER gold tally equalled

By The Roar / Editor

The Tokyo Olympics have delivered some headline acts for the Australians on Day 13 as the Matildas and Kookaburras chase medals, while the Boomers try to position themselves in a place to do the same against the kings of basketball, USA.

First off, however, we have the women’s beach volleyball semifinals featuring Australian pair Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy up against Latvia.

In athletics, we also have some Aussies contesting for medals in the track and field.

The race walk was kind to Australia in Rio, producing our only two athletics medals in 2016. Kyle Swan and Declan Tingay are Australia’s hopes in the 20km race walk final this time around.

Meanwhile, in the heats, Ash Moloney and Cedric Dubler continue their grueling efforts in the men’s decathlon while Nicola McDermott and Eleanor Patterson are just starting off with the women’s high jump qualifiers.

Aussies Oliver Hoare and Stewart McSweyn are on a mission to end Australia’s Olympic drought in the 1500m and have progressed to the semi-final, which will get underway later tonight.

For you gold hunters, other notable athletics men’s finals include the triple jump, shot put, 110m hurdles, and the 400m. While in the women’s schedule, the pole vault final is the drawcard.

There will also be gold medals aplenty in the men’s kayak singles, women’s kayak singles, men’s skateboarding, women’s diving and cycling. While gold medal bouts will be held in the lightweight boxing, karate and wrestling events.

We’ll also be keeping an eye on the 10m women’s diving final with Australia’s Melissa Wu looking for another strong result.

In a huge day of team sports, we’ll have separate live blogs for the big Australian matches including the Boomers vs the USA, the Matildas vs USA and the Kookaburras going for Gold against Belgium.

For everything else, stay tuned for live updates in our rolling blog.

What a day. Losses for the Boomers, Matildas and Hockeyroos...BUT...it's also a day that Australian won two golds, one silver and two bronzes. Australia continues to excel. The feel good story of the day was Melissa Wu, who finally earned her first individual Olympic medal.

This is how they line up in the last event of the decathlon. It really is a race in 3 for the bronze medal with Aussie Ash Moloney needing close to a personal best

Looks like Warner needs to run 4.33 in the 1500m to break 9000 points

Late in the 3rd quarter, France leads Slovenia by 10 pts. We need to remember that France beat the USA a week ago. Can they hold on here and go back to back in the gold medal match?

Gardiner opted to go for the tank instead of the T-shirt. Hope he wins.

Men's 400m Final: Introductions are underway and we are close to a start. Kirani James is probably the sentimental favourite but he has a lot of competition tonight

That's about 7 seconds he can give the 4th placed guy. And the 5th placed guy is close too.
