2018 Melbourne Cup barrier draw live blog, updates

By The Roar / Editor

With the 2018 Melbourne Cup fast approaching, it’s time to turn our attention to the all-important barrier draw. Join The Roar for live updates of the 2018 Melbourne Cup Barrier Draw, starting at 6:30pm (AEDT).

The final field of horses for the big day has been reduced to 24, all there’s left to do now is see which gate they’ll start in via random ballot.

As it stands, we have a handful of favourites emerging from the rest of the pack, with Yucatan offering the shortest price at $5.

Magic Circle and Best Solution are the next most likely at $11, while Duretto and Avilius are offering $13 each.

But all that could change depending on the barrier they’re drawn into.

While it’s true that barrier 18 has never produced a winner, it’s been some 35 years since the first-placed horse started out of gates 6, 12, 15, 19, 23 or 24.

It’s curious that gate no. 6 appears in that list, given gate no. 5 has been the most successful over the journey.

Last year’s winner, Rekindling, was drawn in barrier no. 4.
