Caulfield Guineas: Spring Racing Carnival live blog

By Stuart Thomas / Expert

The best three-year-old’s in the land go at it in the Caulfield Guineas with $1.2 million going to the winner. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:15pm (AEDT).

In a race that often determines the value placed on many of the future sires on show, filly Oohood comes out to match the boys and might enjoy the two kilo weight advantage she has over them.

Coming off a win in the Flight Stakes and if stripped fitter for this one, she is indeed a real danger.

This is a race not to be missed during the Spring Carnival and one of my favourite races of the year, considering the role many of the runners will play in the future breeding plans of owners and connections.

Golden Rose winner Autumn Sun is the undoubted horse to beat and looks likely to be odds-on come start time.

Leonardo Da Hinchi is a fantastically and unforgettably named horse in with an outside chance and Native Soldier, off the back of a victory in the Prelude should be somewhere in the mix.

Running out the mile may be the only query for it, yet if Darren Weir has him wound up and ready to fire, he could certainly produce a minor upset.

Kris Lee’s Gem Song, might be the best of the rest, yet the Guineas does look a race in four.

Prediction
It is hard to go past Autumn Sun, so I won’t. The biggest danger is probably Native Soldier. They are alongside each other in the gates and might be in close proximity for some time during the race. However, given a calm and uneventful run, Autumn Sun will prove too strong.

1. Autumn Sun
2. Native Soldier
3. Oohood

The Autumn Sun has produced a dominating performance to win the 2018 Caulfield Guineas What a performance from one of the rising stars of the Australian turf. James McDonald was never in the right spot throughout the entire race. He was sitting three wide for much of the trip. Unable to find the fence or a comfortable sit one out. Despite the imperfection in running, The colt let rip in the last 300 after looming onto the shoulder of the leader and put Native Soldier to the sword. In reality, daylight was second, although the record books will say Vassilator was runner-up and Oohood made up a great deal of ground to run third. Good 'n' Fast finished fourth on a day when Australian racing fans may have witnessed the heir to Winx. There will be much talk about the Cox Plate, yet Chris Waller and the owners will be more inclined to take some time with a horse that looks to be a champion in the making. Final result 1/ The Autumn Sun 2/ Vassilator 3/ Oohood 4/ Good 'n' Fast Thanks for joining me for the racing action today, I hope you enjoyed it. The carnival is just getting started with a stack of wonderful races in store over the next month.
