Winx wins No.31 at Chipping Norton Stakes

By Stuart Thomas / Expert

Race result:

Champion mare Winx has extended her winning streak out yet again, winning the Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney to make it 31 consecutive victories.

It was a stunning win, on a day when Happy Clapper really pushed her to the brink. In the end, Winx did put space on the second place horse yet it took some time for her to really wind up fully and mow down the leader.

The acceleration was probably not as impressive as in days past and the end of her racing career is nigh, yet the fans were on their feet one more time as the best horse in the land did her thing.

Unforgotten ran on bravely for third and one can only imagine how many races Happy Clapper could have won if Winx had not been on the scene.

Race preview:

Australia’s favourite horse Winx steps up to 1600 metres in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:40pm (AEDT).

After a successful comeback in the Apollo Stakes, Winx sets out to build her legend even further today when she takes on a small field in the Chipping Norton.

Run at weight for age, the race is one of the feature mile races on the Sydney Calendar and has been won by some of the best.

Sure to collect a significant portion of the $600,000 on offer, the mare will seek her 31st consecutive win against a field that, frankly, she towelled up two weeks back and will probably do so again.

Once again, gun trainer Chris Waller has the bulk of the field entered.

Six of the seven runners are his but the champion will catch his eye during the running of the race far more than the other six.

Happy Clapper will no doubt be battling on late and should be better for the run in the Apollo. Egg Tart and Unforgotten will sit on the next line of betting.

Outside of that, Winx won’t be threatened and it will be interesting to see just how the others attempt to take on the best horse in the country.

Hugh Bowman will steer Winx once again and must pinch himself each and every time he is given the opportunity to ride such a wonderful beast.

1. Winx

The closer she gets to the end of her career my mind always goes back to Bradman's last innings.

Winx has done it again with her 31st successful race on the trot. What a wonderful performance from the great mare.

It is another day for the history books as Winx adds another Group 1 to make her tally; a record 23. After 31 successful runs in succession, it is hard to see anything but a couple more before the curtain is draw in a month or two.

It’s hard to see it happening. Happy Clapper ($9.00) might be the best of the rest and Egg Tart ($46.00) and Unforgotten ($41) would be the two most likely to cause an upset.
