Despite still being something of a new concept, the pre-NRL season All-Stars clash presents an opportunity for the best indigenous players from both sides of the ditch to stake their claims for spots in the national competition. Not only is it a chance for the best players to put on a show, it is also a touching and powerful moment for all those involved; as they pull on a jersey that means much to them in terms of heritage and culture.

This year’s match stands to be a compelling affair with a strong Indigenous side led in the halves by Tallisha Harden and with firepower out wide in the form of Nakia Davis-Welsh and Quincy Dodd. The Maori team will be relying on big bodied forwards to dent the Indigenous defensive line and will then look to their halves to find the points required to claim victory, in what should be a close contest. Corban McGregor will be a key player out wide for the Kiwis.

There will be the usual sense of brutality and desperation about the match, something that all All-Star matches possess and the result could well come down to the team most able to maintain a controlled level of aggression throughout. There will be big hits, exciting action and it will all be played against the back drop of a celebration of the first peoples of both Australia and New Zealand.

Prediction
The Indigenous side looks to have a slightly better balance and should enter the match as favourite. Yet, something tells me that this will be the tightest of affairs with the Maori women pushing them all the way to the finish line.

Indigenous All-Stars by 4 points.

The Women's Indigenous All-Stars have defeated the Maori Ferns in a gripping encounter at CBus Stadium on the Gold Coast. It was a typically passionate match between two sides determined to win and for much of it, a stalemate ensued. After a try each in the opening quarter, the next two 15 minute segments remained scoreless. Errors killed attacking opportunity after attacking opportunity for both sides, with dropped balls and poor offloads hampering their ability to put points on the board. Finally it was the kicking game that broke the deadlock, as Tallisha Harden took a high attacking kick and off-loaded to Nakia Davis-Welsh. The winger planted the ball under the posts for the match winning try and a win for the Indigenous women that will in some way make up for the disappointment of losing the corresponding fixture in 2019. Year after year this match-up will only get bigger and more intense and it is now a centre-piece of the Australian rugby league calendar. Now, the stage is handed over to the men for their clash in an hour or so. Final Score Indigenous All-Stars………..10 Maori All-Stars…..…………..4
