The refs arm was tucked in as he was about to call time off, if he was going to award the try his arm would be extended before he blew the whistle. The footage doesn't suggest the ref did anything but take the right course of action in this instance
I don't disagree.
All I'm saying is you are defending a ref for fluking the right call. He WAS about to call a Burgess try, from a position where he was unsighted.
You can disagree with that as much as you like, but the footage is clear.
Mate, the whistle would be in his mouth no matter what he was ruling... Regardless, the whistle was never blown so it's play on!! The phrase is play to the whistle, not play until you think the whistle should be blown...
No way,
His whistle was in his mouth, his left hand was about to gesture a try and he stood cold on one spot preparing to do it. If he was going to blow for the bunker, he'd have prepared to raise his hand, not prepare to extend it.
Look at the footage, he's about to blow a try, he sees Brooks and then calls play on.
He had NO sight of Burgess grounding the ball and was a tenth of a second away from calling it.
Play on was definitely the right decision, but how he got there was a total fluke, and not a result of good refereeing.
It also meant he got to referee the top grade for another week.
He'd have been hung out to dry by Annerseley if he'd stopped play to check, before Brooks put the ball over the South try line and Burgess had not planted the ball correctly.
As you said, an excellent piece of refereeing
I swear League media deliberately misunderstands the rules to rile people up. If he stopped play to send the south's try up this vid would just be asking if the tigers were robbed...
Really poor take.
For all the criticism refs cop, this was an excellent bit of refereeing as in that split second moment Sutton recognised what was happening and realised letting it play out was the way that it guaranteed (subject to the Bunker getting it right) the right result was achieved. You play the whistle.
Nah mate, he was going to send it up to be reviewed until Brooks decided to run with it instead of grounding it like what would usually happen. South’s players were still running in and celebrating after Sutton clearly shouted play on
Dreadful refereeing from Sutton.
Look at the replay, he was dead set ready to award a try to South's and only noticed late that Brooks was running away with the ball.
His actions were why South's players piled on each other.
The worst part? He was going to award a try despite having zero way to see Burgess. The post padding obstructed his view.
Thrilling end, but largely caused by refereeing incompetence

Right decision by the bunker, all must agree. As for the ref, given the circumstances he did what he did, the end result was correct.

Another click bait headline. Fortune had nothing to do with it. The Bunker that so many hate, made the correct call.
