In what will be a historic day for Sydney club rugby, Randwick will host Argentina at the picturesque Coogee Oval in the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 2:30pm (AEST).
The last time such an event came to Sydney was when the Galloping Greens hosted New Zealand way back in 1988, with the final result of that one ending in favour of the All Blacks 25 points to 9.
While a similar result could be expected again, there is plenty of young talent the home side have named for the game as they look to take the challenge to the powerful scrum and counter attack of the Pumas.
Even though the big storyline is about former duel international Andrew Walker, who will come off the bench for Randwick, their most experienced starting player is former Wallabies back rower Ned Hannigan, while eight of the remaining 14 in the side have played for their country either at junior level, or in sevens.
Will Harrison, who played for the under 20 Australian side in both 2018 and 2019 will be one to watch at fullback, while number eight Kyle Harris has been touted for big things in the New Zealand system.
Co-captain Mitch Short will line up alongside Ben Donaldson in the halves, with the duo also receiving plenty of good wraps, while winger Josh Gordon would love to have a chance to exploit his speed on the sideline.
However, Randwick must be able to match it in the scrums with Argentina if they want to have a chance in this game, with the visitors likely to play something resembling their best team.
Argentina coach Mario Ledesma has stated the Pumas knocked back a Test with a Pacific Island nation to play against Randwick, wanting an easier hit-out after a punishing year for Argentina’s top talent, with the Jaguares making it all the way to the Super Rugby final.
They have been in Australia for almost a fortnight, getting used to the time zone and conditions and with players like Tomas Cubelli, Matias Orlando, Emiliano Boffelli, it would be no surprise to see some entertaining, attacking rugby at Coogee.
Prediction
While neither team are probably going to be at their absolute best for this match, Argentina, who are playing close to a full strength side, would be extremely concerned if they can’t pick up a win.
Los Pumas by 12.

Ledesma planed the trip Down Under, and wanted a training match higher in intensity than a starters vs subs practice with public, but with less contact and physical stress than a test match. He asked UAR to turn down Fiji's offer for a last pre-WC match in Japan.

How hopeless was Hanigan.OMG what an embarrassment.

Do you think that’s because of Randwick or because of Argentina? Pretty sure NSW Country vs Argentina would’ve pulled the same crowd. Would’ve been more competitive too. The skills from Randwick were honking.

Spot on. It also put the supposed strength of NSW Shute Shield competition into perspective. NRC is a level is a level above club rugby, similar to Currie Cup and Mitre Cup. It is time NSW realises that Shute Shield is not ehat they think it is.

Not sure why this game ever happened. Randwick 2019 is nothing like the Randwick that dominated Sydney Rugby back in the day and could call on a sprinkling of Test and state players to take on the All Blacks. And back then the All Blacks weren't the full on professionals of 2019 like the Argies are today. Still I'm sure the crowd didn't expect anything other than the result they got but still appreciated watching some world class players at Coogee Oval and enjoyed a few beers and a great day of Rugby. That's as good as it gets!!

Bigger crowd than all the nrc games combined.

You would have thought so. The US or Canada would have made more sense, and probably money.

I don't know - surely they'd have a better option than playing an amateur club side on that front.

Funny, I assumed it was a fundraiser for the Argentinean campaign. Couldn't see the point of the game for them otherwise.

Hopefully helped line the club coffers, won't have helped either Argentina nor the guys that got dragged from NRC who could have had a more meaningful match. NSW Country managed the win, despite losing their captain to this game. Wonder if Sydney will be as lucky having lost both their playmakers to this game.

Im struggling to see how that run benefited the argies in any way Maybe helped randwick

Shute Shield is excellent for what it is - an amateur city club competition. Nothing more, nothing less.

Indeed...the only support the Wallabies need, don't you know?

Argentina will be disappointed, they were hoping for a bit of resistance rather than a training run. At least Tonga scored 7 points. The hubris of Shute Shield.

The Randwick came 8th, they should have played the students . Randwick would be lucky to beat the students 3rds.

Scotty- I can’t believe you tipped Argentina by only 12. What on earth was the rationale behind that? As said below, really highlights the importance of the NRC. The catch and pass and basic skills of Randwick was pretty shocking. You can get away with that with the time and space that Shute Shield footy gives you, but not against professional athletes. The conditioning was also a stark difference, and I think has to be focused on more by aspiring players in a Australian rugby union. In league, players hit professional programs looking like athletes chiselled of Stone. In Union we’re not even close, and it was evident when they were stood next to Argentina. Too slow, too weak, too unfit. That’s not even a criticism of the players either - the Shute Shield is an amateur competition. If these blokes are going to go to the next level they’ll need to work on that. Power to them. I look forward to seeing more of Harris, Harrison and Gordon. Reilly - the 13 - was decent too.

Thoughts on the game Roarers?

Well, a 12 tries to nothing blowout in the end. Randwick were in the game for the first 15 or so minutes, but from there, it was one-way traffic, with Argentina controlling the game excellently, spending most of it on the attack and capitalising on their opportunities, which will provide a nice little confidence boost before they jet out to Japan. Randwick 0 Argentina 74

Well, that shows the importance of the NRC.
