In what shapes as a possible play-off for the bottom spot in Pool A and both team’s best chance at winning a game, Russia and Samoa will clash in Kumagaya City. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of this match from 8:15pm (AEST).

Russia were competitive in the opening match of the tournament when they took on Japan, but fitness at the back end of the contest was ultimately their downfall as the Japanese side came over the top for the victory.

That being said, the fact that Russia haven’t made any changes for their second game of the tournament, especially on only a couple of days rest, comes as something of a surprise.

This will also be a different style of game, with Samoa likely to bring a very phyiscal tempo to their play throughout the tournament, although that counted for little in their final warm-up game, when they were routed by Australia in Parramatta.

It may well turn into a survival of the fittest this evening, given a forecasted humidity of around 60 per cent with rain – that should further suit the Samoans in the middle of the park.

The Russian forwards were solid in their opener against Japan, but the side really lost their way when turning to the interchange players during the second half, and that could become an issue again for the nation.

Tagir Gadzhiev and Nikita Vavilin will be their key men in the second row, while Valery Morozov needs to set the tempo in the number one if Vasily Dorofev and Yury Kushnarev are a chance of making things happen for Russia in the halves.

Russia do have an experience in the halves through Kushnarev, who has plenty of caps to his name, but they may need more than that to go with the Pacific Island nation.

That battle of the flankers becomes even more important when you consider the quality of Samoan skipper Chris Vui, while their physical style of rugby should create opportunities on the wings for the dangerous Ah See Tuala and Ed Fidow.

Samoa come into the game as heavy favourites, and given Russia are still searching for their first victory at the tournament overall, it’s hardly a surprise.

Prediction
One would expect Samoa to be good enough here, particularly down the later stages of the game as Russia run into fitness issues.

My recollection was that the host nation theoretically controls the schedule, so there was the fsint hope the Japanese could have struck a blow for the little guys. Doubt that is anything like actually how it works though. All about the money I guess, but could be interesting one day if some of these minnow nations wete to develop bigger rugby economies.

the minnows always seem to get the short stick in the scheduling

Vasily Artemyev is also the captain of the Krasny Yar. 15 players of the Russian national team from two Siberian clubs. 10 from Krasny Yar and 5 from Enisei-STM. Enisei-STM will unfortunately play this last time in the European Challenge Cup in a group with Worcester, Newport and Castres. The EPCR wants to give up two qualifying places to South African franchises. On their account 5 home victories over European top clubs. Enisei-STM 10-7 Brive Enisei-STM 24-7 Newcastle Enisei-STM 19-12 Worcester Enisei-STM 38-18 Newport Krasny Yar 34-29 Stade Francais Players of the Georgian national team and many foreigners from the Southern Hemisphere are also playing for these two clubs. At the moment, Siberian clubs are looking for an opportunity to participate in Global Rapid Rugby since 2020. It is very important for them to play in the international league with strong opponents. The championship of Russia, unfortunately, is still very weak for them.

My second fave team, I reckon. Great attitude, and totally committed. I've also been impressed by their LH winger, doesn't shy away from anything. As Egbert says, v strange to have two games so close together!

I remember Artemyev the fullback from his two years with Northampton Saints 2011-13, very fine player used mostly as a wing for them. It is absolutely scandalous they've been asked to back up for their second game so soon.

Good win for Samoa - jury is out if they will make it out of the group. Ireland will top the group. The question is if Scotland can pitch up to play and if Japan shake the nerves and play like they did in the PN cup.

Thought some of the Samoans looked a bit unfit.. I can't see them beating Jaoan, let alone Ireland or Scotland. They should have put at least 50 on a Russian side that played 2 matches in 5 days.

FULLTIME Samoa have come away with a big win over Russia in their opening match of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. It was a somewhat odd first half as Samoa found themselves with two players in the sin bin simultaneously, going into the break down by a point. Russia were obviously fatigued in the second half though, and they had no answers to Samoa, who ran downhill to the finish line. Russia 9 Samoa 34
