Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets are set to end Round 23 of the A-League in fine style at Coopers Stadium on Sunday night. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, with the ball first rolling at 6:20pm (AEDT).

Adelaide United have been a hot and cold team in recent weeks, winning three and losing four in their last seven games.

They have been an entertaining team to watch, scoring the fourth most goals in the league but conceding the second most, but have conceded 12 goals in their last three games and are coming up against a Newcastle side who are seeming to gel in the attack.

However, they will be boosted by the return of star winger Ben Halloran, who signed a two-year contract extension with the Reds early last week.

Newcastle Jets are coming off a bye following a surprising 2-1 win over Perth Glory. They also have recently mutually terminated Matt Ridenton’s contract. The 24-year-old holding midfielder has played 30 games across two years with the club. Part of the reason Ridenton’s contract has been terminated is to allow an extra visa spot at the club.

Ridenton’s ready-made replacement, Joe Ledley, has been announced in the squad for the first time this weekend after moving to Newcastle two weeks ago.

Bernie Ibini also may be in for a start after playing 30 minutes off the bench two weeks ago, while Wes Hoolahan will most likely be given his first start in Newcastle colours after his second consecutive appearance off the bench.

Newcastle has been talking up this fixture as they look for a win to keep their increasingly slim finals hopes going, with Johnny Koutroumbis stating that Newcastle is a “different beast” after the bye, and Bobby Burns saying that “Adelaide is well beatable”.

Prediction
My score prediction is 2-2, but if Adelaide defends anywhere near the level they did against Western United, I can see Newcastle comfortably winning.

Hi Kanggas, I'm glad you picked up on that. I simply counted them out based on the gap between them and the top six, as well as the tricky run they have for the last few games. However, they are looking increasingly lucky with the football they're playing and I what a story it would be if they were to make the six! Thanks for tuning in.

Match Report Newcastle Jets have dispatched Adelaide in a thoroughly professional performance away from home, prevailing by three goals. Adelaide had the better of the first quarter of an hour, keeping possession and moving Newcastle from side to side well but after Newcastle opened the scoring looked increasingly worried at the back and went on to concede two more goals while not creating enough chances to warrant anywhere near a point. Newcastle opened the scoring late in the first half, in the fortieth minute through a trademark Roy O’Donovan tap in. Dimitri Petratos got found out wide on the right with a good, defence stretching ball, and played a first-time low ball which bent around the two Adelaide centre-backs. The pass sublimely found the feet of O’Donovan, who made no mistake in passing the ball into the back of the net. Newcastle doubled their advantage after shortly into the second half, in the fiftieth minute through Matthew Millar. A beautiful ball over the top from Nigel Boogaard found Matthew Millar who made a brilliant run in behind. Millar took a solid touch before clinically finishing it over the top of the advancing Paul Izzo. The Jets, who were flying high, made it three just three minutes later. Wes Hoolahan found Bobby Burns in behind, who crossed the ball into the box looking for the head of Steven Ugarkovic. Ugarkovic connected with the header stunningly, blasting the ball into the back of the net from behind the penalty spot. Adelaide struggled to muster a response and the final result finished 3-0. Next, Adelaide plays Melbourne City in a tricky game away from home while Newcastle goes up against Wellington Phoenix at home. Final score: Adelaide United 0, Newcastle Jets 3
