Melbourne City travel north to face the Brisbane Roar to begin the second round of the new A-League Men’s season. Join The Roar for all the action from 7:45pm (AEDT).

Brisbane Roar got off to a flying start against Macarthur last weekend, but by the second half they were holding on, and had goalkeeper Jordan Holmes to thank for keeping the scores locked at 0-0.

Melbourne City on the other hand took full advantage of some generosity from the Western United defence in their 2-1 success in the opening game of the A-League Men season, and they unearthed a new cult hero in Valon Berisha. That Aussie larrakin twist to his post-match interview put the Kosovan in the national spotlight but that was after his skilful play had already lit up AAMI Park beforehand.

City did run out of steam and almost let Western United back into the game, but the three points were well deserved against the Champions.

City have the personnel at their disposal to put their opponents to the sword, and coach Patrick Kisnorbo doesn’t have room to fit all his stars into the starting line-up, Marco Tilio and Richard van der Venne missing out last week and they may possibly miss out again this time round.

Tom Glover could be pivotal for City this evening, and this game looks to be an intriguing match-up.

Roar boast a real marquee player in Charlie Austin, a player who has brought something extra to the A-League and who has embraced everything about Australia. If that doesn’t make him a cult hero already, nothing will, and he has plenty of quality around him.

Connor Chapman welcomes his old team to Suncorp Stadium and will know he’s in for a tough game, while Jay O’Shea continues to add that touch of silk to coach Warren Moon’s midfield.

Brisbane Roar have a good record against Melbourne City in Queensland over the years, winning 60 per cent of their home encounters.

Prediction

Brisbane Roar will soak up the pressure to sneak a goal in the second half, and will hold on tight until the end for a slender victory. Brisbane to beat the Grand Finalists 1-0.

I thinkk the coach set up the team passive so they played passive. Lofthouse looked to have some good touches and Demhie showed some spark but it helped that the rest of the team got a bit more aggressive for a while.

I agree with blaming the coach. City under no stress most of the game. Moon's approach was passive which is a joke for early in the season & a home match.

There is a bottleneck issue but Tilio's lack of gametime is his own fault. He left Sydney FC for gametime and he should leave City similarly.

No Mates - crowd officially given as 7890. a reduction of around 800 on the first game. If the team plays like it did today that "reduction figure" is going to accelerate at a great rate of knots. jb

Lofthouse looked definitely UP to it. He & Demhie finally made the attack spark. Austin was a passenger but he also looks slow& only made halfhearted efforts, maybe even carrying an injury. The team performance looked lackadaisical, no urge to play. Looks to me that was the coaches decison.

Roar have no serious attack. Lofthouse was not up to it and Austin shows poor judgement when he finally gets the ball. O’Shea’s crosses are still rubbish and the energy levels ( even after going up a man) were soo low. I’m very worried Roar will be fighting Glory for the wooden spoon. City were their usual superior selves. Can’t wait to knock them off Saturday week.

Thank you Texi -It must have taken extreme concentration to have completed a report over 95 minutes on this game. Roar were totally outclassed in every aspect of the game and how it showed in the faces of the more experienced players. Something at this cub is drastically wrong and if the upper management don't do something soon they won't have to bother about filling a stadium, any stadium, such is the standard of football they are purveying for a long suffering public. The formation at the start of the game had experienced observers puzzling again at what they were seeing. With Jack Hingert once again given the right wing back role and Amietta trying to do the same on the left side and the other defensive position filled by erstwhile centre-backs, it was no surprise when both City's goals were engineered out wide on the left side. After half time and the "gift" of an opponent being sent off, the coach made multiple substitutions no doubt in an attempt to "up the ante" in his team's performance and what did that prove ???. Zero,Zilch has to be the answer and this shows the total lack of depth in this squad. 120 minutes football and yet not one goal, the problem has not gone away. jb

Tough on him for sure and obviously affected by the send off.

Tilio not getting not many minutes so far this season is an obvious reason why we need more teams and most importantly a NSD. The bottleneck in Australian football is holding up young Australian talent developing here and its no wonder they are forced to go overseas and potentially be lost to the national team like Volpato or lost to the game entirely as well.

I went to Suncorp to watch live tonight and wondered early on why the guy in front of me had bought himself four beers just for the first half. I quickly realised it was to numb himself from the dour performance of the roar. The first half was terrible from a roar perspective with hardly any penetration into the opposition half and no service to our much heralded new striker. The second half, the guy in front bought another 4 beers for himself and it was prophet. No improvement until City had a player sent off. But even then I reckon Charlie Austin might have touched the ball maybe 10 times the whole match. A wasted asset. A bright spark when Cyprus Dehmie came on and showed and achieve some attacking intent and link up with Jay O Shea, but overall that was a dismal performance from a club once renowned for attacking penetrating football. Once again no goals in two games and we didn't look much like scoring tonight.
