The Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United do battle at Central Coast Stadium to close out Round 3 of the A-League. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEDT).
With another unpredictable weekend of football having just unfolded, both the Mariners and and the Reds have a chance to advance on the ladder with a win today.
The Mariners have impressed in the opening fortnight, defending bravely and with Ross McCormack as a constant threat up front, have probably exceeded some people’s expectations.
Kalifa Cisse has been a rock in defence and his influence has been nothing but positive on some of the less experienced defenders that Mike Mulvey has in his squad.
Andrew Hoole is welcomed back from injury today which could also provide some much-needed spark and experience.
Despite the obvious positives, the home side is still without a win and today would be a perfect time to claim one, up against the newly crowned FFA Cup champions.
Adelaide comes into the game full of confidence after a polished and committed performance against the Sky Blues on Tuesday night, with enough time to rest up to be ready for this clash.
Similar to the Mariners, there have been good early season signs for the Reds, yet wins have proved elusive.
Put simply, the Reds will feel this is a must-win encounter.
Craig Goodwin was the star on Tuesday and pushed his claims for a Socceroo birth in the upcoming Asian Cup. His combinations with Isaias and Ken Ilso will be vital for the Reds this season and are still in the developmental stages.
Both teams have the opportunity to leap to third on the ladder but also face the prospect of sitting eighth should things pan out poorly for them today.
Prediction
The Mariners do look like a team that may struggle to score yet Adelaide, despite Goodwin’s heroics, look to have a similar issue at this stage of the season. That suggests a low scoring affair and a tight contest.
Adelaide to sneak a win away from home in a tight one on the back of some Nikola Mileusnic magic.

So Adelaide looking the goods so far? A very tidy win before facing Perth. That is shaping up as a very competitive fixture.

The Adelaide Reds have dusted up the Central Coast Mariners to the sweet tune of three goals to nil in a dominating display at Central Coat Stadium. In short, the Reds were good and the Mariners were flat out poor. Craig Goodwin found two further goals after his brace earlier in the week; all in the presence of national coach Graham Arnold and he would surely be one of the hottest men in Australian football right now. Goodwin's goal in the 9th minute set the tone for the match and after Apostoplos Stamatelopoulos also found the net after 16 minutes, the Mariners fate seemed assured. Despite a positive start to the second half, the Mariners were dealt a cruel blow after Ben Kennedy made a fundamental error to allow Goodwin his second from what should have been a benign free kick and the Mariners' heads slumped even further. The home side tried hard over the last 30 minutes yet the deficit was far to great and the Reds far too professional to allow anything even remotely resembling a comeback. It will be back to the drawing board for the Mariners, with Mike Mulvey searching for the reasons behind such a poor performance and feet up and rest time for the Reds. After a week where an FFA Cup and comfortable A-League victory brought joy to the entire organisation, the players will enjoy a brief rest before tackling Perth Glory next week.
