Australia and the Philippines face off at the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 9pm AEDT.
After an 18-0 win against Indonesia, the Matildas face a more challenging test in their second group game of the Asian Cup tournament.
Former Central Coast Mariners and Matildas coach Alen Stajcic has taken over at the helm of the Philippines and already secured three points after a win against Thailand in his coaching debut for the South East Asian nation.
While the opening match of the tournament turned out to be nothing more than a training run for the Aussies, Stajcic’s women will put up a much sterner performance, with defensive discipline and his knowledge of the Matildas’ personnel potentially a talking point as the action unfolds.
Nothing short of a win will be acceptable for the Australians, with top spot in their group a must.
The Philippines will be eyeing off a quarter-final spot after their win over Thailand and if they are able to grab a point against the Aussies, top spot would still be within their grasp.
That does seem likely, yet Stajcic has brought in some quality players from abroad to bolster the Phillipines’ team and the Australians will have to adjust quickly to an opposition they know little about.
Prediction
While Philippine hopes will be high, the Australians should have their measure in what will be a willing and passionate contest.
5-0 looks a possible score line, with the power and stamina of the Matildas potentially breaking the game open in the second half.

The Matildas have beaten Philippines by four goals to nil to continue their impressive start to the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. It was far from clean sailing for the Australians up against former coach Alen Stajcic, with the Philippines squad looking well prepared and disciplined throughout the entire first half. During that period, the Philippines defence held firm and the Australians’ reliance on long balls into the area produced few chances, with perhaps Clare Polkinghorne having the best of those as a scrappy lead up accidentally landed the ball at her feet. A scoreless first half said a great deal about the resolve of the Philippines and even more about the lack of skill shown by the Australians with the ball on the ground, with few chances created in the attacking area. However, the second half was to be a different story, as the fitness levels of the more hardened Australian pros came to the fore and after the headed goal by Sam Kerr in the 51st minute, three more were added. Mary Fowler’s strike from distance in the 88th minute was perhaps the highlight of the entire match. It was a poor first half from the Matildas and a far better second, yet the win did have the positive of featuring some of the young talent in the squad; given decent minutes by Gustavsson this time around. Now Thailand await this coming Thursday with a win there securing top spot in the group before the Matildas move on and start the business end of the Asian Cup.
