Match result:

The Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United have played out a 0-0 draw at McDonald Jones Stadium in Round 20 A-League action.

It was a game with so much opportunity for the Jets – a chance to edge closer to the top six and put considerable pressure on the three teams directly above them. What looked likely to be a high scoring affair proved to be anything but.

The Reds had the best of the first 45 minutes yet Newcastle created a few moments of their own. The half time score was perhaps reflective of the match, however when the game did open up in the second half, a goal seemed certain.

In the end it never came, with Roy O’Donovan missing a couple of golden chances and Craig Goodwin doing everything he could to send the visitors into the lead.

Glen Moss was excellent in the Jets goal and as the game drifted towards a draw, the Reds were happy to settle for a point.

The Jets threw all they had at the Reds late in the match yet the goal never came and now have little wriggle room in terms of semi-final play. Another loss this season and it might be all over for Newcastle.

It wasn’t a great game of football but certainly an entertaining contest at times.

Match preview:

The Newcastle Jets meet Adelaide United in Round 20 A-League action at McDonald Jones Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEDT).

To have any hope of playing semi-final football in 2018/19 the Newcastle Jets must beat Adelaide today, if they do, the result could be far more pleasing than just a points move to within three of the top six.

A win today will put the men from the Hunter hot on the heels of the three clubs battling things out for fourth position on the A-League table.

Melbourne City, Wellington Phoenix and Adelaide themselves look likely to fill the final three spots in the six and this match today could be the most telling statement of the season so far if the Jets do manage to knock off the Reds.

It would set up a fascinating run home with seven matches still to play in the A-League season.

After a tough fortnight where Asian Champions League qualifying occupied much of Newcastle’s thoughts, they are now free of those pressures and can refocus on their charge to the finals.

Ronald Vargas and Jason Hoffman will be missing for this game yet Ernie Merrick has included the players he rested last weekend in the Jets 3-1 victory over Melbourne City.

Joey Champness, Roy O’Donovan, Dimi Petratos, Daniel Georgievski and Glenn Moss all come back into the lineup, whilst the Reds have some serious injury concerns.

Nikola Mileusnic and Ben Halloran remain on the pine and Vince Lia’s return is a welcome one for the visitors.

The fate of the Reds will once again rest with Isaias in the midfield. Craig Goodwin and George Blackwood will be hoping to provide the spark in front of goal.

Prediction
This looks a game of vital importance and the Jets have nothing to lose. Hence, I feel Merrick will let them attack. There is no point doing anything else, with bags of points needed on the run home in order to qualify for finals play. The attacking team will triumph against a Reds side that wouldn’t be disappointed with a point today.
