The Newcastle Jets will play the first of two Asian Champions League knockout matches in an attempt to qualify for the group stage, taking on Persija Jakarta at home. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7pm (AEDT).

Qualifying for this year’s preliminary stage by making the grand final (which they hosted and lost) in last year’s A-League season, the Jets will now have to win two games on the trot to make their way into the group stage alongside Sydney FC and the Melbourne Victory.

Taking on the best teams in Asia may lay ahead of the Jets, but they will enter this match as red-hot favourites.

The Indonesian club they come up against play in the Indonesian Liga 1 competition and, historically speaking, are the most successful football club from the nation.

That being said, they do have a winning culture and could well pull off an upset, but travelling to Newcastle, they should be outmatched across the park.

They played in the second-tier Asian Cup last year, making the semi-finals, but don’t have a heap of improvement on that, despite a dominant 3-1 beatdown of Home United from Singapore to qualify for this trek to Australia.

The Jets, on the other hand, are playing a much higher quality of football each week in Australia, and even without a great deal of success this season, have a majority of a squad which made the A-League decider last year.

While they sit just outside the top six in the domestic competition, the Jets will look to use their speed and fitness advantage to grind down the Jakarta-based club.

For that reason, winger Demi Petratos and striker Rory O’Donovan have big roles to fill, with the duo’s combination up front having the potential to break down a defence which, while solid, isn’t amazing.

The visitors will need to defend well and pick their opportunities when Newcastle get over-eager in attack, committing too many players forward, with Serbian Marko Simic the key to them making any sort of run, provided he can get some reasonable deliveries from the midfield.

The winner moves on to play defending Asian Champions League winners the Kashima Antlers away from home next Tuesday.

Prediction
The Jets should be far too strong for the visitors, but they will want to be careful. Concede the first goal and it could turn into a real struggle to peg one, let alone two, back. Jakarta may well stack the defence and play for a shootout from the opening minutes.

Jets 2 – Jakarta 0.

Stevo it is going to be a different team. They looked tired and extra time isn’t going to help on a long haul flight. Watch out ????

FULLTIME The Newcastle Jets have kept their Asian Champions League campaign alive with a 3-1 victory in Persija Jakarta after extra time at McDonald Jones Stadium. In front of a healthy midweek home crowd, the Jets struggled with execution in the final third and, combined with their inability to put the game away, they ended up having to play the extra half an hour to get the job done. After a first half without either team scoring, although both had good opportunities, the Jets just took five minutes in the second half to get things going as Ronald Vargas put one away off an excellent ball from Demi Petratos. Still, the Jets put in some poor defensive work 20 minutes from fulltime, with Rizki Ramdani Lestaluhu putting a goal away on a corner from a header. With no more goals, extra time were needed, but Persija were out on their feet and unsurprisingly, struggled to compete with the fitter Newcastle side, who made some substitutions to take the struggling Roy O'Donovan and Demi Petratos off the field. Nigel Boogaard was the first to score in the 101st minute, then Matt Ridenton put a goal away with just minutes to go to end any chances of a late comeback and penalties. Newcastle, who played the extra half hour, will now need to recover as they get set to take on Melbourne City on Friday, then face the Kashima Antlers in Japan next Tuesday at 9:30pm (AEDT) for a spot in the Asian Champions League group stage this year. FULLTIME Not much more drama after the restart here. There goes the final whistle, and the Jets took an extra half an hour, but are still alive in the Asian Champions League after a two-goal victory over a tired, fatigued and ultimately, outclassed, Persija Jakarta. Newcastle 3 Jakarta 1

That was some tackle! You don't see that kind of NRL-cum-AFL-cum- NFL type assault on a player very often in the HAL if at all :)

120' - GOAL JETS, MATT RIDENTON That'll be the winner, and the Jets will be off to Japan to play the Kashima Antlers next Tuesday night. Not a bad free kick from Cowburn there, curling in, but Ridenton has hit that header absolutely fantastically. Been very dangerous since he came on. Newcastle 3 Jakarta 1

118' - YELLOW CARD - RYUJI UTOMO PRABOWO (Presija Jakarta) Time ticking away now for the visitors. They look for a way through and Alua goes to Simic, but he was guarded by two or three Jets defenders and loses the ball. Ridenton out on the counter and he wins a free kick, brought down by Prabowo who goes into the book. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1

118' - Simic has had a really tough night. He loses it again here just shy of halfway under heavy pressure from Jackson, who has the fresh legs off the bench. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1

117' - The Jets back on the attack. Ridenton, Thurgate, Cowburn and Kantarovski all involved, before Cowburn finds space, goes back to Ridenton at the corner of the box and his curling ball goes behind for a goal kick. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1

116' - The chances are starting to run thin now for Jakarta. They work it through their defence, Ridwan goes to Alua, before they switch right, but not much happening just at the moment as time ticks down. Eventually, the through ball from Alua is a shocker and Moss cleans up. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1

115' - A ball down the sideline here from Cowburn to Thurgate. He goes back across his body to Ridenton who shoots and shoots well, but it's saved once more. Ardhiyasa has been excellent this evening. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1

115' - Ridenton to Georgevski, then a ball on the left for Cowburn, but that pass had too much on it and the rushed, off balance cross goes sailing over the roof of the goal and out of play. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1

114' - Thurgate now fails to get on the end of a through ball and Jakarta will clear, but the ball is coming straight back with plenty of space for the Jets to work in. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1

113' - The second corner picks out Cowburn as well, but this clearing header is better, back up the ground. The ball comes straight back, and Simic puts a poor shot to the bottom left corner of the net and Moss makes the easy save. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1

112' - Jakarta through their defence, then Sofiyan goes long. Lovely through ball and Simanjuntak puts it into the Newcastle defender, with the ball deflected behind for a corner. Lovely through ball that. Newcastle 2 Jakarta 1
