Match result:

The Newcastle Jets will be frustrated after they let go of a one-goal lead against a 10-man Perth Glory as they shared the spoils at the McDonald Jones Stadium.

Ernie Merrick’s Jets are still chasing their first win of the season, though this was by far their best performance as they were tight defensively and looked threatening on the counter.

Newcastle took the lead in the first half after Steven Ugarkovic put an incisive ball through for Jason Hoffman, who was able to fire it into the back of the net.

The goal came against the run of play as Glory controlled the ball, but lacked that same creativity to find a chance early on.

Jets continued to show potential on the counter-attack, but they spurned several chances which they came to regret as Diego Castro equalised for Perth with five minutes to go after the ball ping-pong’d around the box.

The momentum was with Glory, but Alex Grant, already on a yellow from the first half after some pushing and shoving between the two teams, was given a harsh second yellow after throwing an arm out in an aerial duel.

Jets chased the winner after Glory were put down to 10 men but they failed to score and earn their first win of the season.

Final score
Newcastle Jets 1
Perth Glory 1

Match preview:

Newcastle Jets have it all to do against Perth Glory on Saturday afternoon as they look to claim their first victory for the A-League season at the McDonald Jones Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 5pm (AEDT).

The Jets have struggled so far in the league as they struggle to replace the injured Wes Hoolahan, with Jason Hoffman, usually a defender, being used as a striker and failing to make anything out of his chances.

Jets coach Ernie Merrick will have to figure out a way to make the most out of his limited forwards, although Costa Rican striker Abdiel Arroyo has shown glimpses of his quality.

Following a largely successful season, Glory have been slow to get out of the blocks this time around, with only one win from their first four matches.

This match against Jets provides Tony Popovic’s men the perfect opportunity to get into some form if they can despatch their opponents like they so often did last season.

Although the Perth attacking trio of Bruno Fornaroli, Diego Castro and Chris Ikonomidis are creating chances, it’s on the other end where Glory are unusually faulty, with individual mistakes and disorganisation giving opponents a way in – not something you would usually associate with a Tony Popovic side.

Following the upset loss to Central Coast Mariners last week, Popovic will be keen to get onto winning ways and will make sure his team don’t make the same mistakes.

Prediction
Newcastle have started the season in poor form, and without any real quality in their side, I can’t see them toppling Perth Glory.

Additionally, Glory will be out for blood after last week and they could come out firing against the Jets.

Expecting a 4-0 statement victory from Perth.
