Perth Glory welcome Sydney FC to nib Stadium on Friday evening in Round 9 of the 2018/19 A-League season. Join The Roar for live coverage from 9pm (AEDT).

The opening fixture of the weekend is a mouthwatering prospect as last seasons title winners face this season’s league leaders.

Perth Glory are flying under new manager Tony Popovic and claimed their sixth win of the campaign at Newcastle Jets last Sunday.

However, Sydney FC – who sit two places back on the ladder – have a psychological edge in this one having won the last eight Hyundai A-League meetings between the two sides.

Perth supporters will be confident their team can end that terrible run here against a Sydney side who have struggled for consistency in the opening rounds.

The bad news for Glory fans is the loss of influential play-maker Diego Castro who misses this match due to a hamstring strain. On a more positive note, Scott Neville and Juande have both returned from injury and are in the squad.

Jop van der Linden is sidelined for the Sky Blues having been withdrawn injured in the Sydney derby last weekend. Midfielder Brandon O’Neill plays his 100th Hyundai A-League match against his former club.

Prediction
Sydney FC might have recent history on their side but this Perth squad look hungry to change all that.

It will be tight, but if Glory forward Chris Ikonomidis can mark his Socceroos call up with another match-winning performance, then I think the home side will nick it.

An extraordinary finish to a very entertaining match. Sydney FC close the gap on Perth Glory who lose for the first time this season. Glory will argue that the late Chianese goal should have stood but on the balance of the whole game, Sydney were deserved winners. Next up for Perth Glory a trip to Central Coast Mariners on New Years Eve. Sydney FC host Brisbane Roar in round 10. That is it from nib Stadium. Enjoy the holidays and happy Christmas!

YES! but NO! The ball is in the net from Chianese but the referee calls a foul on the goalkeeper. Fans. Not. Happy.

Well that goal by De Silva sums up Perth tonight. Dodgy in defence. Just too many errors tonight to keep out SFC.

Kilkenny gets a chance to whip a free kick in from a similar positio but it curls harmlessly into the keepers gloves. The Englishman is furious that no teammate could get on the end of it. Perth Glory 0 - 1 Sydney FC
