Sydney FC will be desperate for a victory as they look to kickstart their Asian Champions League campaign against against Shanghai East Asia. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEDT).

After only being able to pinch a draw from their first two matches of the campaign, this is as good as a must-win contest on home soil for Sydney.

While they wouldn’t be mathematically out of the fight without all three points, they have two road trips left, and it would leave them in the awkward spot of needing something along the lines of seven or eight points at a minimum from their last three games.

It goes without saying though that this match is going to be about as tough as it gets.

They take on the current Chinese Super League champions, who have built their run from a traditional Asian style of football – cluster at the back and counter-attack through big weapons, like two of their Brazilian imports in Hulk and Oscar.

If Sydney can’t find a way to slow down the duo, or get opportunities through the defence, they simply won’t be in the contest against a side who beat Kawasaki Frontale in their group stage opener, then lost on the road to Ulsan Hyundai.

The Sky Blues have been in reasonable attacking tough though, running up 3-1 and 2-1 victories over the Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar in their last two starts, while thy have won four of their last five in domestic competition.

If they are to get the chocolates here, they will need their combination of Adam Le Fondre and Reza Ghoochannejhad to work like a dream at the front, and to play with pace down the wings as they try to stretch what has been a very solid defensive line.

Shanghai have let just five goals in across their first four games, but with three of those coming last start in their first loss of the season, the pressure is on Sydney to try and crack them open.

Prediction
Sydney are at home and must be desperate for the win. If they can manage to slow down Hulk and Oscar, they will be well on their way towards a victory, and should pick up the three points to keep their campaign alive here.

Sydney 2 – Shanghai 1.

Still more than what Port Adelaide will get for their 'historic' game in China!

Too true. Great game - such a shame so few turn up to see it.

Some of the best football ever seen from an A-league team over 90 mins. Disheartening to put in such a massive shift (defensively as well as offensively) and end up with 1 point against one of the money machines

FULLTIME An entertaining 90 minutes of football at Kogarah in Sydney has ended in a three-all draw with Sydney FC and Shanghai SIPG sharing the spoils. Sydney were fantastic from the outset, but had the lead three times - including one just minutes from fulltime - only to squander all of them as Shanghai held on for the draw. The hosts now remain bottom of the group, and with just three points to their name, will need something of a miracle to advance to the Round of 16 after this superb game of football. FULLTIME Sydney with one last chance here. Shanghai have everyone behind the ball though, and Retre eventually takes an off balance shot which had nothing on it. That'll be the end. Sydney should have had all three points, but an extraordinary game of football ends with Sydney and Shanghai sharing the points at Kogarah. Sydney FC 3 Shanghai SIPG 3

90 + 3' - Le Fondre now with a cross, but that's pretty ordinary. He was looking for Grant, and that's taken easily by Junling. Just a poor effort on the cross, which is harsh to say of Le Fondre who has been excellent this evening. Sydney FC 3 Shanghai SIPG 3

90 + 2' - The goals have come in bunches tonight, but it's hard to see anymore now, and this draw - well, it's going to make life near-on impossible for Sydney if they can't find a goal in the final couple of minutes. Sydney FC 3 Shanghai SIPG 3

90 + 1' - Ninkovic with a beautiful run here, but the end result sees him trying to force a shot, which is a pretty weak effort and stopped easily by Junling. Sydney FC 3 Shanghai SIPG 3

89' - GOAL SHANGHAI, ELKESON Shanghai were only ever going to need the one chance to get back level in this game. Sydney make the error on a pretty ordinary back pass, the pass finds Elkeson and he puts the wonderful shot into the top of the net, leaving Redmayne no chance. That's horrendous ball control from the hosts. Sydney FC 3 Shanghai SIPG 3

89' - Well, this isn't quite over, but Sydney have defended another raid now and time is becoming the enemy of Shanghai, as they give away another free kick in midfield. Sydney FC 3 Shanghai SIPG 2

88' - This game isn't done yet, but suddenly, Shanghai want to score again. This is defended well by Sydney though, who then look to go on the counter. A nice bit of play from Le Fondre, but the touch was a bit heavy and Junling comes out to make the clearance. Sydney FC 3 Shanghai SIPG 2

87' - O'Neill's free kick is a little bit of a shocker here. There was a clearance, but the ball comes straight back into the area. Ninkovic with a volley, and then Grant gives away a foul. Sydney FC 3 Shanghai SIPG 2

Reza isn't living up to his promise me thinks. That should have been a regulation header goal.
