The first Sydney derby of 2021 is here, as Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers do battle at Stadium Australia. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:05pm (AEDT).

It has been a long wait for fans of Sydney’s oldest A-League rivalry, yet the passionate derby encounter has finally arrived.

After a long period of dominance going Sydney FC’s way, the balance of power has shifted somewhat over the last two years.

The Sky Blues remain winless in the last four encounters with their old foe and Western Sydney’s new manager Carl Robinson has already presented a professional and committed unit in the club’s opening two encounters.

While the loss to Macarthur in their opening match was a disappointment, the follow-up win against the Jets included excellent attacking signs for the red and black.

Sydney FC have had just the one encounter thus far and enter this game off an extended break thanks to numerous postponements in the schedule.

Three points came the way of Steve Corica’s men in the clash with Wellington, yet two brilliant strikes in Wollongong and a polished performance from the Phoenix perhaps flattered them somewhat.

This match looks like being one that recaptures some of the old passion and fire of derby matches played a few years back when Western Sydney were flying far higher than they have been in recent times.

Prediction
All the signs point to a Wanderers victory in this one. Sydney remain without the services of an out-and-out striker, as they wait for Bobo to reach full fitness, and the Wanderers should be more hardened after two solid hit outs and their combinations starting to work.

Sydney FC 0, Western Sydney Wanderers 2.

Not too sure what the A League are trying to achieve by playing the marquee game of the season at 5.30pm in the hight of summer. First half was passable and the 2nd was really enjoyable as the sun had dropped resulting in an improvement in the game. Also considered going but when trying to book (surprised that with ltd seats there were so many available at 2pm) - the cheapest for 3 (yes still nose bleed) was $170. With parking approx $200 before snacks (my sons suggested buying the concession tickets as they are students (would still be approx $130 all up). Definitely not worth going esp for a 5.30 game (if 7.30 then the odds are more 80/20). At that time it is even too hot to watch it on telly - better to record and watch at a time that is more pleasant. I cannot seem to get their reason why they would schedule a game at this time in summer - lets look after the spectacle and the players and do not schedule games before 7pm in summer!

Not having a clinical striker is really bringing Sydney closer to the chasing pack, this could be quite an interesting season. Regardless of how wasteful they are, being there measly self at the back will keep them in the upper quarter of the league

Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers have shared the spoils at Stadium Australia. Both sides managed a goal on a beautiful Sydney afternoon, with neither able to really unlock the opposition defence consistently enough to claim victory. Sydney FC were the better side in the first half, yet after a few early chances, saw their dominance slowly eroded by a gutsy Wanderers squad that gradually worked its way back into the contest. By half-time, the match looked evenly poised and only a Sydney FC penalty broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, when Kosta Barbarouses scored from the spot. The kick was earned when James Troisi was adjudicated to have brought down Milos Ninkovic in the box. Yet the television replays suggested it was a 50/50 call at best. The Wanderers drew level just five minutes later when Andrew Redmayne erred and Troisi found the back of the net. At 1-1, the match was set for an exciting finish. The Wanderers had the best of the latter stages yet failed to take their chances and Sydney also had moments where they could have claimed all three points. In the end, they were shared and both managers will walk away reasonably pleased with the effort they drew from their squads. Derby number two for the season will give Sydney another opportunity to break a drought that now extends over two years and the ever improving Wanderers side will probably be an even more cohesive unit by the time they meet. In the end, it was a good derby without being a great one. Final score Sydney FC…………………………....1 Western Sydney Wanderers…..….1

I’d be happy with a draw. Happy that CCM are still first!
