In the most unexpected French Open final, Australia’s own Ash Barty takes on Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Join The Roar for live coverage of the final, with scores and a blog beginning starting at 11pm AEST.

The ‘Barty Party’ rolls on at the French Open, with the 24-year-old making her first singles Grand Slam final with a 6-7(4) 6-3 6-3 victory over young American Amanda Anisimova.

In a thrilling semi-final, Barty dropped a 5-0 opening set and for the first time this French Open showed some personal frustration.

Barty mustered some brilliance in the second set, coming from nowhere to win six games in-a-row and level the match at one set apiece.

In the third, again there were some incredible moments. Anisimova broke Barty early, though Barty broke back immediately and managed to hold, before breaking again.

Barty had three match points in Anisimova’s service game at 5-2, though was unable to convert any. In the following game, Barty served her way to victory and her first Grand Slam singles final.

At the same time on Court Simonne-Mathieu, Marketa Vondrousova defeated Johanna Konta 7-5 7-6(2) to reach her maiden Slam final.

The teenager shocked Britain’s Konta, who had several chances in the first to take an early lead though couldn’t capitalise.

In the second set tie-break, Vondrousova held her nerve; a sliced backhand was her final shot that dropped just over the net and was too difficult for Konta to chase down, sealing the final spot for the Czech.

Thankfully, the rain held off and both women were able to finish their matches without much interruption at all.

Number one ranked Australian Ashleigh Barty is the first Aussie to make a Grand Slam final since Sam Stosur won the US Open final in 2011.

The right-hander began the tournament as the eighth seed, but will be in the top five come Monday and as high as number two should take the French Open title today.

Her opponent is Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic.

The 19-year-old left-hander entered the tournament ranked number 38 in the world, though is sure to rise with her performance this tournament to be well inside the top 20.

In her journey to the French Open final, Vondroušová has not dropped a set in a brilliant run.

Among Vondrousova’s scalps was 12th seed Anastasija Sevastova in the fourth round and 31st seed Croatian Petra Martic in the quarter-finals.

Barty and Vondrousova have met on two previous occasions, in Birmingham in 2017 and at the Cincinnati Masters in 2018. Ash Barty won both matches in two sets.

Prediction
Surviving a tight scare against Anisimova, Barty will be better prepared to fight for her first Grand Slam title.

Vondrousova has had an unbelievable run so far this tournament, but in close encounter with Barty that might all come to an end.

Barty to win in three sets.

She’s done it! Aussie Ashleigh Barty is the 2019 women’s French Open singles champion, defeating 19-year-old Czech Marketa Vondrousova, in straight sets on Saturday afternoon in Paris. After rain again delayed the men’s semi-final, the women finally got onto court and began their match around 12:30am AEST. Barty started the match swiftly, her head in the game, she got away to a couple early breaks and led 4-0. A few nerves crept in through her service game, Vondrousova going after a few more balls too and rewarded with a break back. The teenager got on the board in the first set. Barty broke back immediately, under little pressure and then served out the set, as calm and composed as ever. Vondrousova, who had not dropped a set until this point, was feeling the pressure of the situation. She worked her way into the match in the second set, though at crucial points failed to hit the winner required. A few more unforced errors in Barty’s second set, some longer service games too. However, when it came down to it, the mentally tough Barty had the goods to go all the way. Ash Barty broke Vondrousova, to take the second set 6-3 and win the French Open title in just one hour and 10 minutes. With that, the ‘Barty Party’ kicks off! Australia celebrating their first Grand Slam champion since Sam Stosur at the 2011 US Open and their first women’s French Open winner since Margaret Court. You could not wipe the smile off Barty, nor her team. They are all very proud of just how far this 23-year-old has come in the past three years since she returned to the sport. In her post-match interview, Barty said how proud she was of herself and that it really was a “perfect match” for her. Gracious in defeat, young Marketa Vondrousova will be a name to look out for in future Grand Slams. The occasion got to her a little today, but overall such an impressive tournament and she will be better for the experience in many tournaments to come. Vondrousova is predicted to rise to number 16 in the world with her appearance in today’s final. Barty in a bit of disbelief, but spoke beautifully upon receiving the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen; she praised Marketa and the organisers of the tournament, before thanking her own team for their hardwork and faith in her over the years. Barty will rise to number two in the world, when the WTA rankings are released on Monday. Barty defeats Vondrousova 6-1 6-3.

Presentations to come, but what a journey for Barty. 600+ in the world only three years ago, what a comeback to the sport. Dellacqua on the coverage can't hide the emotion in her voice, so proud of her young former doubles partner and friend.

Onya Ash, great win. She really kept her nerve and played an excellent game. Great to see an Aussie win a grand slam again after so long, and such a good role model as well.

Vondrousova visibly upset she could not perform today, but a brilliant tournament for the young Czech. Did not drop a set until today, but came up a bit short against Ash Barty; the variation of Barty forced Vondrousova into a very defensive game.

A few nerves creeped into that final game, but Barty was able to break and secure the win. 1973 the last time an Australian woman won the French Open, a long time coming!

A calm and composed, clinical performance from Ash Barty, really. Her team right behind her, the box absolutely elated with that victory. Bit of disbelief for Ash, her first Grand Slam singles title. An extraordinary tournament, impressive final performance. So much pride in herself, her team and that's visible on her face. Can't wipe the smile! Barty 6 | 5 | 40 Vondrousova 1 | 3 | 40
