Match preview:

Rafael Nadal will be hunting for a fourth US Open title when he faces Russian Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles final on Monday morning (AEST). Join The Roar for live coverage of the final, with scores and a blog starting from 6am AEST.

The world number two has 18 Grand Slam victories to his name and will move within one of Roger Federer’s record (20 Grand Slam title) with a win at Flushing Meadows.

Nadal has only dropped one set on his way to the championship match; Marin Cilic his challenger in the fourth round took one away.

He has also played one less match, given a walkover by Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis – due to a shoulder injury – in the second round.

The Spaniard will start clear favourite in this final.

Medvedev, the fifth seed, reaches his first Grand Slam final; the 23-year-old’s previous best was the fourth round at the Australian Open earlier this year.

The right-hander has relished the role of the ‘villain’ at this year’s open, strutting around after his victories and agitating the crowd.

“And you guys, being against me, you gave me so much energy to win,” Medvedev said following his round four clash against 118th-ranked Dominik Koepfer, where he first lost crowd support.

The last time a Russian male won the US Open was in 2000, when Marat Safin was crowned.

Medvedev has had an impressive run in North America, reaching the finals in Montreal and Washington, and wining the Cincinnati Masters event last month.

The only time these two players have met was a month ago at Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Nadal convincingly defeated Medvedev 6-3, 6-0 and defended his title at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

Medvedev was very nervous and made 28 unforced errors, however is in great form and has not lost since.

Prediction
A lack of experience on such a big stage increases the challenge for Medvedev and he will have to play at his best to achieve an upset here.

Nadal, in his 27th grand glam final, will be too clinical for Medvedev to match.

Nadal in four sets.

Nadal has now one 4 US opens just one behind Federer. He is certainly more than a clay court player.

"A crazy match." Rafael Nadal thanks everyone involved in organising the tournament and remembers a good friend who is grieving, he thanks his team and looks forward to next years US Open. He then speaks in Spanish, and I know a bit of Japanese, but I do not know Spanish.

"One of the most emotional nights in my tennis career. "All of the support from you guys has been amazing. Normally this is my last thank you, but tonight I thank you (the crowd) first." "Many many thanks for everything"

He admits he thought he had lost the game in the third set, was thinking about what he would say. "I said it in a bad way earlier in the week, but now I say it in a good way. It's because of your energy guys, that I am here in the final." He is very humble in defeat, you can tell he is very proud of his two weeks. And while he didn't get the job done today, he put in a great effort and didn't stop fighting.

The 23-year-old's first Major finals appearance was one to remember. He is presented with the plate and says. Four finals and Cincinnati, what a summer. Daniil congratulates Rafa and his team. An unbelievable feat, 19 Grand Slams. He has a bit of a joke.. "I was watching the screen, number 1 and number 2, up to number 19 and I was like, what would they show if I won?"

Daniil was the enemy of the fans for much of the week, but today we won a lot of respect. Nadal getting emotional as they scan through all of his Major victories, to now his 19th, here at the 2019 US Open. Medvedev 5 | 3 | 7 | 6 | 4 Nadal 7 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 6

Daniil can hold is head high, wowee that was some sort of comeback. Nadal falls down upon achieving the victory, he is relieved and excited. What an epic victory. Looked in the box seat two hours ago, but lost the next two sets, before taking a double break advantage in the fifth. Dropping one of those breaks and finally securing the championship on the third opportunity. Medvedev spent the third and fourth sets beating Nadal at his own game, wearing him down and forcing mistakes in long rallies. Both players head to the change rooms to tidy up before the presentations.
