AS IT HAPPENED: Doubles glory for 'Special Ks' in all-Aussie showdown

By David Holden / Roar Guru

Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis take on Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in an all-Australian men’s doubles final on Rod Laver Arena. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary after the conclusion of the women’s singles final from 9:30pm AEDT.

Both Aussie pairs have had massive wins this tournament with the Special Ks in Kyrgios and Kokkinakis accounting for the no.1 seeds in the first round of the tournament.
Not to be outdone, Ebden and Purcell then knocked out the no.2 seeded pairings in the semi-final.

Both doubles pairings deserve be at the final as a result and it’s expected to be a raucous atmosphere on Centre Court.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis have helped put doubles back on the map this tournament and the TV ratings will most likely be the highest ever for a doubles event – certainly one starting after 9:30pm at night.

It will be interesting to see if Kyrgios is just as fiery with two Aussies down the other end as he has been with his international opponents.

Whenever Kyrgios has been hot under the collar it’s been his mate Kokkinakis who has managed to keep him focussed. He’ll need to do that through the night if the pair is to pull off the unthinkable by winning the event as a wildcard entry.

Whatever happens we’re guaranteed an Aussie victory so strap yourselves in, put on a coffee if you’re on the eastern states and gear up for some of the most exciting doubles you’ll ever see.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis are the first all Australian mens doubles champions at the Australian Open since the Woodies in 1997. They were certainly switched on tonight and their celebration on match point just underlines how much this means!
