Heads to roll at Merseyside

By Freud of Football / Roar Guru

The 3-1 defeat away to Fulham – Liverpool’s worst at Craven Cottage since 1956 – has left Rafa Benitez in a precarious position with six defeats in their last seven matches. It’s crisis time at Anfield.

Normally in such a situation, on the back of such a poor run of performances, the manager – particularly of a Big 4 club – would have already exited stage right.

What is unique this time around is that the fans don’t blame Rafa and don’t want him to go, they attribute their recent failures to the American tycoons who purchased the club in 2007.

I spoke with a very good Scouse friend of mine for the first time since July after today’s defeat to Fulham and it was an interesting discussion to say the least.

He was full of optimism before the season began, our last conversation was on the day they signed Aquilani from Roma, and he was certain that Liverpool’s excellent form last season would be taken that one step further this year.

I had my doubts, noting that £17 Million for their new right-back Glen Johnson was a ridiculous sum and that Aquilani wasn’t going to orchestrate play the way Xabi Alonso did. He told me to worry about how Man United were going to cover the loss of Tevez and Ronaldo; Liverpool were going to be fine.

Needless to say he wasn’t too happy today but he refused to condemn Rafa, stating that the blame lies with the club’s owners.

“Until they get things sorted off the pitch and get some people in with money and a passion for the club things won’t change” he told me.

I begged to differ. Yes the ownership saga at Anfield is a nightmare – a situation I feared when the Glazer’s took control at Old Trafford – and I’m sure it has some influence on the club, but in their haste to condemn the Americans, some points have been overlooked.

Firstly, Liverpool is not the same without Xabi Alonso. Simple. Yes Gerrard is their talisman and Torres their pin-up boy, but Alonso made the club tick. His passes from deep and general play making have been sorely missed this year, not to mention his thunderous drives from distance.

The second problem is the defence; Carragher in particular. He is much like Gary Neville, both getting old and have a similar style. The difference is Neville is now a bit-part player for United, while Carragher is meant to hold Liverpool’s defence together.

He has been caught out three times in the last two weeks and his red-card today was inevitable.

Third but most importantly, Rafa’s transfer policy. Liverpool fans argue that Man United buy their titles, there was a piece on goal.com earlier this year showing that since Benitez took the helm he has spent more money on transfers than Sir Alex Ferguson has at United.

But where does all that money go? Benitez has bought in players such as Voronin, a man they now can’t even loan out; Babel, bags of talent but can’t find his niche at Anfield; and Dossena who has hardly looked the part during his time on Merseyside. For every Torres he’s signed a Barragans, for every Agger a Kyrgiakos.

While Rafa has dabbled buying up 8-10 players a season, other Big 4 clubs have spent similar amounts on 3-4 players and that for mine is the key difference.

Man United and Chelsea continue to build on their strong teams buying up good, young talent while Arsenal spends less but looks more to the future. Liverpool under Benitez seems to buy whoever is available in the hope that one of them will come up trumps, ala Yossi Benayoun.

Even for all his dabbling, he has an unbearably thin squad. In the game against Fulham, five of the seven substitutes were aged 21 or less, four of whom had seven appearances amongst them.

Benitez might be very popular on Merseyside, but Liverpool are in a precarious position both on and off the pitch.

Sitting in fifth place on the table, they look light years away from the title, knocked out of the Carling Cup and with just three points half-way through the Champions League Group Stage, Lyon away on Wednesday is make-or-break time for Rafa, that is if he survives until then.

http://www.theworldgame.com.au/english-premier-league/whelan-blasts-rafa-priorities-252351 - Seems Rafa can't get any peace, now the former players are taking a shot at him. Maybe Whelan wants another shot at managements? It's a bit rich using Torres though to lambast Rafa, I'm pretty sure he wasn't 100% and apparently he needs surgery now so it doesn't really add up for mine.

Inspired was probably the wrong word there. Reina was hardly "inspired", a very good keeper yes but he won't be in the pantheon of greats when he retires. I rate Anderson very highly and Nani is just extremely unlucky, I think he annoys his teammates too much (Berbatov and Rooney constantly scream at him) and Ferguson never gives him an extended run but he is certainly capable. I think he'll "do a Forlan" and leave Old Trafford and become a star. Hargraeves would be the pick of the bunch for mine, yes he is injured and United probably should never have signed him but he is something else, first choice for United and England if he comes back the same player. That Benitez made money on some players doesn't particularly help his current predicament although without Ronaldo, I'm sure United would have lost a lot on their sales (Saha, Van Nistelrooy immediately spring to mind). He needed to invest a little more wisely and go for the 20 Million players rather than the 5-10's. Benayoun is really the only one that has paid off while others have become pretty embarrassing. Vermaelen was scouted by a lot of English clubs but by all reports they deemed him too short for a centre half, probably didn't bother Wenger too much as he can really play football. I must say, I rate him pretty highly. I think the worst bit of scouting would have to be Keegan only seeing Xisco on Youtube, that was a mess: http://www.football.co.uk/newcastle_united/keegan_awarded_2m_after_quitting_newcastle_united_over_you_tube_scouting_row_rss227714.shtml

I certainly wouldn't deny that Benitez has made some poor signings - very poor in fact, but I was quite interested to note from the article that Eddie offered that a lot of Benitez's signigns went on to make the club money. I'd also be interested to know a bit more about his personal involvement in transfer policy, whether or not the issue lies with him or his scouting network. I heard that Vermealan was pointed out to Harry Redknapp by a Tottenham scout, but only as a left back. Redknapp didn't need a left back and spurned the opportunity to sign him. As an aside which of Ferguson's signings from 05/05 until now would you consider truly inspired?

Indeed. One thing Liverpool will always have is their supporters and when they sing this song it is truly amazing.

No, I don't expect City to do a great deal this year but I wouldn't be surprised if they finish above Liverpool either. City will probably need another 2 years to iron out some kinks and get everyone playing in a setup that suits them but I hate to think how they might turn out, everyone was worried when Abramovich's cash flowed in at Chelsea but even he can't match City. On one point you are definately correct, one must consider how much Ferguson spent before Rafa's arrival but that was not my point. Mine was simply that Rafa has had the same amount of money available as Ferguson and which of Rafa's purchases could we say were truly inspired? Reina, Torres, Benayoun, Mascherano, who else? Too many Voronin type players that haven't lived up to his own expectations although I wish I knew some more of the back room workings at Anfield, by all accounts he never wanted Keane so just how much control he has is debatable. Anyway, this is the Liverpool squad from 03-04 that Benitez more-or-less inherited: GK: Dudek, Kirkland, Luzi Def: Medjani, Otsemobor, Henchoz, Finnan, Welsh, Traore, Hyypia, Diao, Carragher Mid: Hamann, Riise, Murphy, Cheyrou, Gerrard, Biscan, Smicer Att: Owen, Diouf, Le Tallec, Baros, Sinama Pongolle, Kewell, Heskey, Partridge. On paper and 5 years down the track that doesn't look like a world-beating squad but certainly better than what Rafa has now. At that time Diouf had torn it up in the 2002 WC, Owen was still excellent, Baros won the golden boot at Euro 2004 just before Rafa took over, Gerrard was already established (although his best years were yet to come) as was Carragher, Kirkland was a far better goalkeeper than the number one Dudek and some of the young talent - even though it didn't develop as it might have - in Le Tallec and Sinama Pongolle were, at the time, names people were predicting big things from in the future. Anyway, I think with the amount that Rafa has had at his disposal he should have done better in the transfer market, he wasn't left with a hopeless squad - they managed to win the CL in his first season - and look at how depleted it is right now, he shouldn't be forced into having 5 U21's on the bench and 7 appearances amongst 4 of them. Yes he can't do a great deal about the youth teams which haven't been as productive as Man United, Arsenal or Man City's and this would have helped him but he hasn't manage to buy enough players that he could stick with and he has too many "maybe" acquisitions, Voronin is obviously my favourite but there are quite a few others.

It is quite thin logic to suggest that because Liverpool have spent more in 5 years than Man Utd has that they should be achieving more than they have. If you extend that argument then it is logical that Man City MUST achieve a great deal this year. A fuller argument must absorb the context prior to Benitez's arrival. How much money had Ferguson spent consolidating his squad from 2000-04? How strong was Man Utd's squad in comparison to Liverpool's in that period? These are key points. If Benitez's transfer policy is open to critique then so is Ferguson's. If you are a Manchester United fan, then why do you have the profile picture that you do?

Sorry Eddie but I don't see what I'm meant to learn there. I used the piece at goal.com which showed Rafa has spent as much money as United since taking over and United have won 3 titles and a CL in that time while Rafa, for all he has spent, has done nothing more than get Liverpool up to second last year and fluke a CL a couple of years back. All the pundits were questioning his removal of Torres from the action at 1-1 against Fulham, I'd suggest he wasn't fully fit and in general, I think he is a good manager on the sidelines, I like the fact that he makes his subs around the 60-67 minute mark to give them a chance to get into the game but at the end of the day he is hopeless in the transfer market. Liverpool have such an enormous reputation that they should never have someone like Kyrgiakos playing for them, he wouldn't even make the bench for Bolton so for Rafa to have him is ridiculous. That he was strapped for cash and needed cheap defensive cover is a problem of his own making, in the current climate you cannot spend 17 Million on a right back when you have the squad Liverpool has and are missing some other key players.

maybe not in the uk (altho arguably leeds was almost a top 4 when they unravelled) but in Italy, AC and Juve managed to bounce back... both kept a large portion of their squad (maybe only their accountants had to be replaced).

In an Arsenal-Liverpool composite side the Liverpool players I'd pick would be Reina, Mascherano, Gerrard and Torres.

"Benitez seems to buy whoever is available in the hope that one of them will come up trumps". Bang on. Since Benitez has been manager Liverpool have the third highest net spend of Premier League clubs. http://transferleague.co.uk
