Channel 9 let the NRL down yet again

By M1tch / Roar Guru

After reading David Gyngell’s comments towards NRL CEO David Gallop over the weekend, I was shocked that a representative from Channel 9 would use the loyalty card while talking about Rugby League.

David Gallop has made his support for former Channel 9 star Matthew Johns quite clear regarding his television comeback with Channel 7, saying he wishes Johns and the show all the best, and of course he would. It’s quite simple why Gallop is wishing Johns and the show all his best; he is excited that a free-to-air channel bar Channel 9 is doing a show about the NRL.

Now back to the original point, the hypocrisy of Mr. Gyngall is incredible considering it’s his station that still won’t show Rugby League live or even near live outside of New South Wales and Queensland.

It’s hypocrisy when a Current Affair host Tracey Grimshaw went after Matthew Johns in his only television interview since the scandal broke in a biased and unfair away, portraying Johns in a similar manner to how Four Corners did.

Seriously, how much loyalty do Channel 9 have toward Rugby League in general?

Channel 9 has already stated that if they get the AFL television rights, they would show AFL live into NSW and Queensland on ‘GO’, and yet after the Melbourne Storm won the 2009 Grand Final, straight after the final siren, Channel 9 Melbourne went straight to the news, to ironically show highlights of the game.

The successful All-Stars game in February wasn’t shown live outside of NSW and Queensland. They even bought the rights to the English Super League to show one match on Sunday afternoons and the other in the early hours of the morning, when Fox Sports offered both games back-to-back on a Thursday night starting at 6.30pm. Five weeks into the season and not one match has been shown yet.

Perhaps David Gallop will show some loyalty to Channel 9 when the game receives some back.

Foxtel's coverage is far superior to Channel 9. When the ABC covered the Rugby League its coverage was better than Channel 9. I hate it when my team is on Channel 9 coverage. I would rather pay for cable than put up with Channel 9.

Dave Read the future! Please ! Everyone except you it appears believes the NRL got less than the code's worth in the last Tv contract. You back your judgement against the likes of Searle,Politis and many within the media proper, good one. People actually involved in the game at admin level.I don''t know what position you hold in the game,in between flying around the world coaching ru,but I suggest it is minimal. LOL mate you continually ignore the negative things about your code, pretending they didn't happen. So you don't mention negatives full stop(eg S14 falling crowds),but devote your daylights hours emphasising rl's negatives. The fact ch9 shows rl after midnight in Melbourne is a reality. If you believe the new Tv contract negotiated by the new IC will let that continue,I am glad you are not running my business. The negative things about rl are exposed in the press for the world to see. When it comes to the media rugby league is exposed under if you like "the good, the bad and the ugly".Warts and all.

Crosscoder. We all don't read the future like you and we all don't just say positive things to make other fans happy. Until that happens its still early hours of the morning for fans outside of NSW and Qld.

Yes Dave LOL, the next Tv contract will ensure the code is played in the early hours of the morning, with business people running the Commision. I suggest fat chance that will happen. I would be more concerned about the fall in TV ratings and crowds for S14 in Nz,(the national code: of ru),before I had a shot at rl in Melbourne. If Carlos Spencer is concerned there must be a problem.Everything in the garden is not rosy.

Hi Oikee, Managed properly a team relocation into Perth has definate merit ,Roosters, Sharks, maybe even my beloved rabbits. The club involved must want to make the relocation and embrace the WA leauge community making Perth its new home. No good coming with the attitude we play out of Perth but Bondi is our real home . I have attended all the leauge games played here in Perth in the last couple of years, the interest is here.! Redevolpment of Members Equity is on the cards, I believe negotiations taking place between the local council ,state gov, western force / rugby union. Who is missing the NRL, this state is on the cusp of another resource driven boom. Bad news if like me you have a mortgage to pay, but just cherry ripe if your the NRL wanting to re establish your self into the Perth sporting market. This will cost the NRL dollars to do, our state government is not falling over itself to seduce the NRL or any other sporting code to Perth. but you gota sow seed in the ground first, before you reap a harvest. ( note to Gallop and company)

DB, bull. The Raiders would be lucky to get 1 fta game a season, the sharks don't get many, Penrith ditto over the last couple of years, Warriors and Souths. The Roosters get heaps of FTA games. Did you even look at the graph? It's got nothing to do with how many games they get on Pay TV, it's all to do with their average ratings every time they are shown over the season and the Storm blows every other code out of the water on Pay TV.

I'm not moving any goal posts, the reason I said that the Storm have accumulated a lot of viewers on PayTV (3rd overall) is because of the number of games on PayTV the only teams to have had more games on Pay TV but less viewers are the Roosters and Warriors. Averages is what really counts here anyway and you have to say that the storm are below average for a top side averaging 7th out of 16 (I know I previously said 8th, but i mis-counted)

Look Matty, we all, well i know we need a team back in Perth, i am trying to get the roosters relocated over there, but some rosster dinosaurs will find it hard to let go. But as you say, we need a team in Perth, weather its a new team or not. Your only chance of this happening is a independent commission, because the dino's we have running the game cant see past there own noses. I look forward to the reds coming back into the comp, in the not to distant future, but like you said, get fox if you want to see rugby league, i live in Queensland and can not live without fox, The coverage is excellent. :)

1st time contributor to the ROAR - I am an absolute NRL tragic born in Perth, spent my formative years in Auckland NZ where I developed a love for the game during the late 80,s 90,s. ( ie the Tina Turner era). Have been home in Perth for the past twelve years and I can assure all you east coast contributors, the only fair- dinkum way you have any chance of following the greatest code of football on the planet is with a foxtel subscription. Channel 9 Perth ( seperate identy from Packers east - coast operation) secure the rights every year by default to all NRL games,State of origin, Grand Finals. I know what I m on about because I have had lengthy discussions with channel 9 Perth every Grand Final day for the past 11 years, begging, pleading, harrassing the network to provide live free to air coverage of the NRL Grand Final. ( Yes last year we got the GF live) Free to air coverage in Perth is just a cruel f#%$ing joke, I would like to make one other point expansion of the code in 2013 in my opinion has to include Perth, we have members equity to play out of, and averaged 19000 spectators a game before the rug was pulled from under the Western Reds. To assure the success of the franchise the NRL needs to commit to a five year plan to re-establish the code here in the west. A five year commitment would be sufficent amount of time to prove the nay- sayers wrong or the true believers right about the strength of Leauge in the West.
