AFL will earn more, but NRL TV revenue to lift

By M1tch / Roar Guru

In life there are some certainties: birth, taxes, death, and that the AFL will get more TV rights money than the NRL. It’s a fact that I hope one day will change.

But as the next media rights for all the codes are the most important in their histories, we have to be ready to be beaten once again.

In comparing the AFL and the NRL, both codes are so similar – with the majority of ratings coming from the heartlands – but the AFL has the better deal in which games involving the Swans or Lions and some big games are shown live.

The NRL and its fans around the country are incredibly envious of it.

Comparing the first couple of rounds, the AFL wins the battle with a average combined TV audience of 3.542 million compared to the NRL’s 2.668 million.

Now, is it just me, or does the NRL do pretty well when free to air games only go to two cities, whereas each of the major capital cities get at least free to air games live or next to live each week.

Going from the average weekly ratings, the NRL is about 25% below that of the AFL, so with the AFL going to the magical $1 billion mark, it’s not unrealistic for the NRL to go for $750 million.

The NRL has more power than they’ve ever had before coming into the next round of TV media rights. Will they get
as much as the AFL?

The answer is no.

But with probable expansion plans to the Central Coast, and hopefully Perth, the bargaining power gets a little more viable for the NRL.

It all makes for very a exciting negotiating processes.

Yes but the NRL only broadcasts 3 games on to FTA. If you were to take the average of the NRLs FTA Ratings and compare with the AFLs average FTA Ratings, the NRLS is far superiour. When you take into account that the AFL gives the FTA networks picks 1,2,3 & 4 of their best games each week and the NRL gives Nine just 1,2 & 5, the fact that NRL average FTA ratings out outscores the AFL is even more incredible.

There's a few errors there JP. For instance Geelong in included in the Melbourne Coverage area. ... http://www.oztam.com.au/pdf/TV_Ratings/TVratingsguide.pdf

You were correct about the Gold Coast being included in the metropolitan figures, but that's about it. In the overlapping areas, OzTam captures the data for all stations, but only reports data on Metropolitan stations. Any data captured for the regional station gets reported as 'SPILL'. You may notice where ratings are listed, it often states that Community Stations and Spill on are not reported. Take the following extreme example: Regional Ratings participants in regional area: 100 OzTam Ratings participants in metropolitan area: 100 Regional Ratings participants in overlapped area: 100 OzTam Ratings participants in overlapped area: 100 You're arguing that the overlapped zone is being counted twice because 100 people are taking part in OzTam and another 100 are taking part in Regionals? Let's say all 100 overlapped people in regional ratings were watching NBN. And then let's say all 100 overlapped people in OzTam ratings were watching Nine. Then, you would have double counting because 200 people would be counted towards NBN/NINE. But the reverse is also true. If those in the Regional ratings were watching Nine, and those in the OzTam ratings were watching NBN (in the overlapped zone), then the ratings would be zero, even though they were all watching NBN/NINE. But of course, those are extremes that would never occur. It would even out. So if you were to split it 50/50, where half of the participants were watching NBN and the other half were watching NINE in the overlapped zone, the ratings would be 100 to WIN/NBN and 100 to 'SPILL', which don't count towards either. And if you don't believe me, contact OzTam. That's what I did, and here's the response: Quote: OzTAM reports viewing to the metropolitan free-to-air network’s broadcast in the metropolitan area defined by the maps/ postcodes under the above link. All viewing to regional free-to-air broadcast in the metropolitan area is also captured; however it is reported by OzTAM under ‘SPILL’. So, I guess you've got some editing to do to your spreadsheets"

Zac Are you referring to Codecrosser or me Crosscoder Just on your earlier comment about me being moderated at times,I have no problem with that, especially when I get sucked in. What I find at times is different rules for some and one only has to look at the comments on this thread.A one side penalty count if you ask me.

Yet gets almost as many viewers as the AFL, sometimes more (without taking New Zealand into account). Rubbish, you are well named.

Try getting your girlfriend or wife to dye her hair blue or red(according to who your team is) in Sydney and getting her to go to a pub. It'll get you straight to the front of the queue.

The NRL already gets far too much considering it is essentially only in 2 out of 6 states.

The so called fragmented nature of the regionals, when a large proportion of the rl viewing audience comes from this area with apopulation larger than WA and SA combined.Conveient to ignore huge population centres of Canberra/Newcastle/Coffs Harbour/Mackay/Rockhampton/Townsville that form part and parcel of the regional viewership. So the rural notion 9is just that,a small indeed very same percentage comapred to the regional towns. again the aggregate is ignore with the addition of the Soo/under 20s/Tests/All stars/NZ. Again no one cares to admit we are in fact comparing 5 cap cities for AFL at decent FTA hours compared to 2 for rl ATM. Comparisons for viewership can be argued many ways.

Zac, I think this is a little hypercritical when articles are posted on here such as "rugby punted to help GWS push" and "theres more diving in AFL football" etc etc. Now I don't personally care but Zac, you guys can't have your cake and eat it. Following this site for a while, it is obvious that certain people on here get favoured treatment. As I am being moderated, I would appreciate that you post this comment. I am not criticising any sport in particular, just you!!! Very few of my comments get posted, so please be fair and post this comment!!!

How come Dave gets to continually throw rocks at Rugby League. Just look through this thread and that's all he does. It gets quite tedious fast.

Look at the ABS predictions for 2050 for NSW and QLD.... those two states will make up over 60% of the nations population. Sure, there will be growth in Melbourne, its predicted to get bigger than Sydney, and Perth will grow big time too. But growth in NSW and QLD will be bigger. I fully understand why the AFL is doing what its doing... they are trying to cash in on this growth, especially since it will be people comming from overseas with no alegiance to League or AFL. And AFL doesn't need all of them either for it to be a success... just enough to draw ok crowds and improve tv viewership. Concidering the number of Victorians living in SE Qld now, GC should do well. The only problem there for AFL is its a very fickle sporting market. GWS will be much harder though.
