What do you remember about World of Sport?

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

The legendary Channel 7 sports show World of Sport is an Australian TV institution, which gave many Victorians who watched it between the period 1959-87 many hours of enjoyment.

The characters who made up the World of Sport team are still spoken with revered tones many years later. The likes of Ron Casey, Lou Richards, ‘Unca’ Doug Elliott, Bill Collins, Bob Davis, Jack Dyer, Sandy Roberts, and many others were stars of the show.

Some of the highlights of the World of Sport era include:

* The handball comp, especially in the special 25th anniversary edition of the program, which three of the all-time greats – Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer, Ron Barassi and Barry Cable – competed against each other.

* The World of Sport footy panel, and the tension between Richards and Dyer, especially when long standing rivals Collingwood and Richmond faced each other.

* Coaches corner, which saw the coaches of the previous day’s VFL game questioned by a World of Sport footy panelist about that day’s game.

* The woodchop, and also the wrap-up of the previous day’s races by the ‘accurate one’, the legendary race-caller Bill Collins.

World of Sport ended after 27 years on air when the then owners of the Seven Network, Fairfax, thought a sports show broadcast live from Sydney was of better use than a Victorian-based show with a 28-year run.

What do you remember about World of Sport?

To World of sports I have this old picture(given to me from my great grandfather) from around the 1950s with five members of the panel and I am wanting to auction or sell this, if some one is interested or wanting a photo of it l can be contacted at the about email address. The picture is on a laminated board and it has a little bit of damage but could be fixed. Regards Ray Robins

Judging from what another person said, it sounds like any sport BUT rugby and rugby league... that's not really a wide world of sports if you ask me...!

Yes,after he retired. One show I remember,Sam had a crack at Captain Blood,Jack Dyer, calling him a has- been who's been out of the game to long, before Lou jumped to his mates defence. He's had that petulant attitude all his life, but now that same shoe is on Sam's foot.

Ron Lou and Doug started the show in 1959.I have a ONE OF poster drawn by famous Australian cartoonist Robert "Fidge" Fidgeon celebrating 25yrs of WoS ,it has everyone on there, even the female streaker, some with their private parts showing.I'll take it down to KB and see if he can tell me the names everyone in it.Pride of place at my joint.Brings memories back every time someone see's it.We're showing our age.Sydney-siders just don't get it,without doubt WoS was in a class of it's own. WE WILL NEVER SEE A SHOW LIKE IT AGAIN,unfortunately.

An old front-rower who played against Rex Mossop claimed that Mossop did some pro-wrestling himself. I don't know if he meant here or in England where Rex played League after he left Rugby Union. Said that was part of the reason for Rex's distinctive cauliflower ears.

I remember the great Essendon ruckman Geoff Leek who used to be a regular on the show. What about "Chicken" Smallhorn, "Mr Footall" Ted Whitten, Des Tuddenham, Ron Barassi and Kevin Murray. Remember that "Four'N'Twenty" Pie ad on the bus? The show was compulsive viewing every Sunday morning for years. Some of the sponsors have gone the same way as the show. A different world; innocent times.

But of all the moments in the WoS era, none was better than in 1966, when Ron Casey interviewed the then heavyweight boxing champion of the world, the late Rocky Marciano. It was not only the best boxing interview ever on Australian TV, probably one of the best sports interviews of all time. It was a perfect example of how to do a sports interview-whether it's on TV, radio, or in the newspapers...properly.

And out of all the Coaches Corner segments that was aired on WoS during this period, none was more dramatic than the one involving then Hawthorn coach Allan Jeans & his Geelong counterpart Tom Hafey, the day after the infamous Hawthorn-Geelong match in 1985 at Princes Park, featuring the incident between the Hawks' Leigh Matthews & Geelong's Neville Bruns.

For some reason I've taken to whistling the theme music recently ...to quizzical stares from my Gen-Y workmates. The YouTube clip was exactly as I remembered it! Also pretty unforgettable were Doug's enthusiastic hyping of Pal dog food - he almost looked ready to down a bowl of it himself.

Sydney had a similar version called "Sports Action" and then "Sports World" which ran for years on Channel Seven on a Sunday from 11-12, and then, after the ending of Channel Nine's legendary "World Championship Wrestling" show which aired from 12-1, Sports World not-so-coincidentally expanded to 11-1pm. The show was hosted by Rex Mossop and pretty much the last hour was devoted to rugby league, including the memorable "Controversy Corner" where a panel of former players with broken noses and cauliflower ears (ie forwards) discussed "Pertinent League Matters." I remember that For a few years Johnny Warren had his own soccer segment on the show, which mainly consisted of him presenting his segment and then correcting Mossop on most of the latter's soccer observations. The REALLY funny part was that Mossop was a keen wrestling fan, and started showing clips from the United States, a few years after the Channel Nine show was cancelled. He then famously said that Seven were close to starting their own wrestling show, which would be become part of his Sports World program. But in the interim, Channel Ten won the rights to broadcast rugby league, and Mossop jumped to Ten as their lead commentator. And lo and behold, the very first Wrestlemania was broadcast by Channel Ten in 1985. Rugby League and Pro Wrestling? Is this where the "grapple tackle" originated?

AFL took up 80-90 of World of Sports which probably summed up the psyche of Melbournians. Sports Today (the 3AW version) is similarly dominated by AFL, certainly compared to the 2UE version in Sydney that while, concentrating on League, still cover in some depth a myriad of other sports. Always loved coaches corner but that was when all the games were played on Saturday arvo. Bill Collins'segment on racing, cigarette in mouth, put me on the road to the punt. They were also the days when you saw last 100m (yards) of each leg of the quaddie on the nightly news. I think the Soccer bloke was Fred Villiers and he always got short shrift from the AFL blokes. the O'Toole family were legendary and loved how they continued to use the O'Toole father's countdown for each woodchop after he died. Bob, Lou and Jack got away with heaps and Uncle Doug kept the show together with heaps of Patra OJ and Ballantyne chockies. The best thing about the era was that it WASN'T professional; you could stuff things up and walk in front of the camera etc. I remember the yarn about Uncle Doug going off one day when Lou burnt his que card. It was an easy way to waste 3 hours on a Sunday morning. Thanks for the opportunity to relive a few memories.
