The legendary Channel 7 sports show World of Sport is an Australian TV institution, which gave many Victorians who watched it between the period 1959-87 many hours of enjoyment.

The characters who made up the World of Sport team are still spoken with revered tones many years later. The likes of Ron Casey, Lou Richards, ‘Unca’ Doug Elliott, Bill Collins, Bob Davis, Jack Dyer, Sandy Roberts, and many others were stars of the show.

Some of the highlights of the World of Sport era include:

* The handball comp, especially in the special 25th anniversary edition of the program, which three of the all-time greats – Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer, Ron Barassi and Barry Cable – competed against each other.

* The World of Sport footy panel, and the tension between Richards and Dyer, especially when long standing rivals Collingwood and Richmond faced each other.

* Coaches corner, which saw the coaches of the previous day’s VFL game questioned by a World of Sport footy panelist about that day’s game.

* The woodchop, and also the wrap-up of the previous day’s races by the ‘accurate one’, the legendary race-caller Bill Collins.

World of Sport ended after 27 years on air when the then owners of the Seven Network, Fairfax, thought a sports show broadcast live from Sydney was of better use than a Victorian-based show with a 28-year run.
