The South Africa 2010 injury curse

By Melanie Dinjaski / Roar Guru

This World Cup seems to be cursed. Weeks before kick-off, major players have been ruled out due to injury. And I mean major players.

Just last week England’s captain Rio Ferdinand was ruled out of the World Cup, after a nasty collision with team mate Emile Heskey left the defender with a severe cruciate ligament strain.

Then there was the tackle on star Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, during Cote d’Ivoire’s friendly against Japan, which resulted in emergency surgery on his broken forearm. Initial reports ruled Drogba out of the World Cup, but some still believe he will play.

There is much speculation that in just 8 days time, Drogba will make the team. Though, let’s be honest; this is still a long shot.

But wait, there’s more.

Nigeria lost their Chelsea star, John Obi Mikel after the midfielder raised concerns over his recovery (or lack of) from recent knee surgery.

Miroslav Karhan, the Slovakian midfielder, has also been ruled out. Karhan had been struggling with a troublesome hamstring which he was unable to recover from.

Marco Streller, Switzerland’s key striker was scrapped from his team’s line-up, with a thigh injury wreaking havoc during a training session.

Then there are the injuries a little more relevant to Australia’s Socceroos.

Group opponents Ghana lost their star player, Michael Essien after the striker failed a fitness session testing out a knee injury he suffered way back in January. The loss will take a lot of attack out of Ghana’s side, and should help the Socceroos get up.

And finally, who could forget those words of criticism by Michael Ballack against our very own Harry Kewell. Call it karma, call it luck, but just after those comments were made, Ballack was injured during Chelsea’s FA Cup win, and subsequently ruled out of the World Cup, much to the delight of Socceroos fans across the Australia.

Many teams have escaped this curse, the Socceroos being one of them, and let’s hope it stays that way.

IF FIFA were around at the time of the Great Bard William Shakespeare, no doubt they would have replaced Shylock in the merchant of Venice. They certainly get their "pound of flesh" from the players.

I suppose I forgot to mention the some things about when these players were ruled out. AFTER being selected, were EXPECTED to play, but only a few weeks before the tournament began, were ruled out. Kewell has not been ruled out. Brett Emerton has not been ruled out. Archie Thompson wasn't even officially selected in the squad because his injury happened way back in March. Just like Kisnorbo. Rhys Williams, well he's no Tim Cahill. And Cahill's been cleared. I have high hopes for their match up against Germany. ItsCalledFootball, don't be such a negative nancy...darling.

very true, its a massive ask I'm sure we're at the edge of whats possible right now, the recovery times during the WC comp are ridiculously low, very tough gig

Actually I was discussing this with mates Saturday. Players at the elite levels have to have exceptional performance levels for a long, gruelling season with their club sides, then at the end of the season they are faced with having to make a ridiculously quick recovery for the biggest football tournament for four years. It's a bit much, and no wonder that some of the game's superstars are going down with injuries on the eve of the finals.

I recall Han Berger on FoxSports Fc commenting on the the length of seasons and the the way the game is played nowadays and stating that players are getting to the edge of what is 'do-able'. Some injuries appear to be just bad luck, like Drogba's but other may be the result of the workload placed on the players over a long period of time.

Essien for Ghana is huge but I wuld rather have Kewell, Kisnorbo and Emerton in top nick instead of Essien and Ballack injured. Fingers crossed Kewell and Emerton are ok. I think the Cahill injury is a nothing issue itscalledfootball, he should be fine.

Melanie darling, what about Archie Thompson, Paddy Kisnorbo, Rhys Williams, Harry Kewell, Brett Emerton and Tim Cahill now has a neck injury. We will be lucky to field a decent match fit team against Germany.
