Advance Eora Fair? It didn't quite work

By ptovey01 / Roar Pro

I was not going to mention the singing of the national anthem at the State of Origin 3, but have just read an article on how it has outraged a number of the Aboriginal community.

I agree that some form of reconciliation is necessary on all levels of the community.

However, whilst it was a nice gesture, having an Aboriginal translated version of Advance Australia Fair is not a way to do it.

It sounded extremely poor and made a mockery of the song.

This duel language anthem has worked in South Africa and New Zealand, but given there seems to be no one set language that all Aboriginal people can agree to, it has probably annoyed more than it has pleased.

I think it should be dropped from all further events.

I would like to know other Roarers thoughts on this.

Hilarious! My best mate is aboriginal and he sat there pissing himself laughing, he couldn't understand a word. Token gestures cause the most issues when it comes to racism.

innacuracy is yours http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/rugby/one-ella-va-feat/story-e6frey4i-1225889611360 "ANTHONY Faingaa's driving ambition since kindergarten has been to play Test rugby alongside twin brother Saia. That dream is set to become a reality after he and his sibling were yesterday selected in Australia's Tri Nations squad. And when the Reds pair run on together for the Wallabies, they will become the first twins to achieve the honour since legends Mark and Glen Ella. Anthony has revealed another similarity between the twins and the Ellas, who are two of Australia's greatest indigenous sportsmen. Their mother, Cindy, is also half Aboriginal. "To be put into the Ellas' league is absolutely phenomenal," Anthony said."

Dishonesty is your strongpoint. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/rudds-rugby-diplomacy-scores-a-pacific-try/story-e6frg6nf-1225834931721 "Tongan Saia Faingaa, who with his twin brother, Anthony, will play for the Queensland Reds in the Super 14 match against the Auckland Blues tonight in Brisbane, said any help for young players in the Pacific would be gratefully accepted. They regularly send home old rugby balls, worn Reds' training jerseys and equipment."Obviously they're doing things pretty tough over there after the cyclone and tsunami, and we try to do as much as we can," Saia Faingaa said. " I'd love to get involved with any Australian government program helping rugby in the islands."

No doubt there are more Indigenous players in RL than RU. RL (and the AFL) have good indigenous development programs and work hard fostering good community relations. It seems RU is finally making up for lost time: http://www.rugby.com.au/community_rugby/playing_rugby/indigenous_rugby,528.html The cynic in my wonders if these programs, the Origin Anthem and the All Stars game etc. are really designed to assist Indigenous communities or just marketing tools in an attempt to say I'm more Australian than you. It’s interesting that many people's interest in Indigenous affairs only extends to the Indigenous people's involvement in sport. I'm afraid I'm guilty of this, perhaps it’s a good thing it’s triggered my interest to start looking further afield than sport.

It doesn't really matter, let's keep the Aboriginal kids in OUR game, they have talent to spare. I'll bet The Poms wish they had a few. lol, whereas in Union they don't need them coz they usually beat the Aussies anyway. -- maybe the Aussies should play more Kooris (apologies if I spelt that wrong, I'm a Pom....

I thought it was unnecessary, polarizing and sad... i mean they are bickering over it themselves apparently... there is no one aboriginal language and if the papers are to believed the tribe doesn't even exist... I also thought it inconsiderate to all australians regardless of background. We are united under one flag, one anthem... gee how many other backgrounds will require it to be sung in their language now. Aye shall i ask for a Gaelic version because i've got some distant scottish blood? There is nothing racist about the comments above and to say that is as bigotry as saying rugby is only played by toffs....

or does it rather reflect that rugby's main and most represented junior market (currently) is the private school market where the upper middle class white boy rules, thus showing us that rather than rugby's problem it is a problem of that wholistic society in itself. though i see plenty of italians, greeks, asians, islanders, protestant, catholic and in fact aboriginal players from my school who played

no not dumb really, i could point out your numerous mistakes and oversights. they're not refferred to as islanders in normal australian lexicon, therefore one can only presume you were talking of another cultural group. how is the percentage i provided of the wallabies squad innacurate? you havent proven otherwise. i provided the names, 3 in a 28 man squad, just under 11% if you divide 3 by 28 and than time by 100 (just in case you don't understand how to calculate it). you have Kurtley beale, Anthony faingaa, saiaa faingaa, colby faingaa, laurie weeks, will chambers, Lieran longbottom, matt hodgson and rod davies out of 120 people (thirty from each squad) in this years super 14 that makes atleast (without further knowledge and research into the matter 7.5% Meaning that your proposed 1.78% is a lie. and which far exceeds the 2.5% percentage of aboriginal australians. i never said that we didnt lag behind league, however i did propose that technically according to statistics, league far over represents the indigenous population. whilst rugby cannot possibly be blamed for not having an excess amount of indigenous australians

As a Mungo who now plays Rah Rah, I must agree with Uncle re it being more inclusive. When I first made the move to Union from League I was just that league bloke and had to try and break into the fold. It didn't help that I played with a bunch of guys with the old school ties who didn't want to really accept you if you didn't go to the right school. However, I found my the right club and my place and now enjoy it. However, I still find league more accepting of everyone from all races. Look at the different ethnicities playing junior league compared to junior rugby. there is a mix in both but league far and away has a much bigger acceptance.

where did you ask for the aboriginal players in the super 15? for one thing the super series rugby only started in 1995. secondly to name islanders it would be quite easily. you never requested those statistics and they would take a lot further investigation. please, propose where i made things up and would humbly apologise, but to my knowledge everything i have presented was factual.

This is Australia. We speak English. We don't speak some made up language that exists in no practical sense and is merely a collection of small fragments of hundreds of different languages that are spoken by next to no-one. It would make just as much sense to sing the Anthem in Italian, Chinese, Gaelic, Croatian or Vietnamese. After all - these people are just as large a percentage of the Australian people as Aboriginals are. Unless you are going to sing in the language of every Australian ethnic group just stick to English.
