NRL fishing for heartland expansion

Following David Gallop’s whistle-stop tour of Central Queensland this week, it was amusing to read comments forecasting that Rockhampton could be the base of the next NRL franchise.

Like any good lawyer, his comments have been full of platitudes, but little of substance. Yes, we all knew Central Queensland is entering a boom phase and yes, we all knew it has a keen League population base and yes, the NRL would be mad not to check it out for future expansion……but in 2013?

His only new comment has been today on radio, stating that the Gold Coast model has grown TV audiences and thus heartland bids can expand the game.

When talking heartland bids, David Gallop consistently has said ‘fish where the fish are’.

So where are the fish?

Rocky’s population is 80,000 and the nearest decent sized town, Gladstone (107km away) has 30,000. So to claim they have more than 110,000 as a reachable catchment area is fanciful. How many will travel to away games? 50? 100?

Forget the Ipswich bid this time around. This is being cobbled together at the last second by a Club which draws a few hundred to its games and whose Leagues Club sells $2 steaks (provided you buy a beer). Its only being created following more David Gallop remarks six months ago that the western Brisbane corridor must have an NRL team eventually. Again, we all agree with him… eventually. Make it a true independent west Brisbane bid with a new name and colours, dump the Jets name and I’m all for a team come next TV deal.

Ipswich has a population of 170,000 and combined with Logan City (280,000), a 450,000 population which will grow to 600,000 in 15 years can probably sustain a team once they put together a strong, community bid… if News Ltd allow competition for the Broncos in an already crowding landscape.

As Bear proponents say, and I’m now converted to their thinking, Central Coast Bears have a population of almost 1.1 million, comprising 320,000 on the Central Coast and 750,000 in northern Sydney. The Central Coast is growing rapidly so in 20 years time that will swell to well over 1.2 million.

As heartland bids are not affected by strategic points on a map, its irrelevant whether they are in QLD or NSW, it just matters how many fish there are and if they are biting. The only bid that can prove they are biting is Central Coast, as they have I see over 3,700 financial members, more than some current NRL teams! I also see their Facebook site has over 21,800 fans, more than Newcastle, Cronulla, Penrith, Canberra and the Cowboys.

So the Central Coast are financially secure and have the pond with the most fish, who are biting hard. Brisbane has a pond still under construction and we don’t know if there are many fish, or if they will bite. The fish are biting for sure in Rockhampton, but there aren’t many in the pond at all.

So if the League bring in just one heartland team, where would you fish?

Just think – two could be accommodated, one from NSW, one from QLD if the Sharks were culled or moved to Perth…. no doubt the IC will examine all options.

Now turbo if the team was called the cc redbacks or stingrays or something else in blue and orange or another colour tthen yes your argument is valid and it would only cater for the cc area iof 300 000. But as the team is called the bears and wearing red and black then you add in the north shore as well . And what was that pop . You seem to have neglected to put that in, approx 730 000 isn't it ? Naming the team the cc bears also connects to the big business on the ns and also gives us every right to play that 1 game a year at nso to reconnect to the north shore. That's why the north Shore Is a major part of this bid getting up. Yes if it was just a cc team with a different name and colour then people outside the areas and state would see it as just another nsw team but by adding the north Sydney bears part of the bid people are more excepting as it's a way of bringing the bears back into the nrl. And I can tell you now there are a lot of people that want that to happen.

dear oh dear all right mate you believe what you want the north shore is part of the catchment area for the cc bears and that's how the nrl see it as well. Add 181 finacial members to the central coast bears after their 3 days of memberships. That's what counts mate. As I said see you on the paddock 2013.because the bears will be there. Hey even in your analogy cc has more pop then the Ipswich area and rockhampton . All the bids will be looking at their catchment areas. And that's where their pop will come from. Plus you can add to the bears 13 million bucks. See ya . :-)

Sydney has 9 teams therefore they can arguably claim 500,000 each. StGeo-Illawara can also claim just under 300,000 for Wollongong Newcastle claims its 500,000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Coast_(New_South_Wales) says 300,000 if the Central Coast is not part of Sydney then it cant claim anyone from there talk about rubbery figures! :^) the Central Coast will compete with N.Qld for smallest population base in NRL. To claim a million is a bit much

It's not that hard to explain, the CCBears format, unless of course you are not familiar with the Sydney area.. the best way to describe the Central Coast Bears will be the same model as the St george illawarra dragons and also the West tigers. Illawarra steelers still have a U/16s and a U/18s that play out of the gong .. and feed into the ST GI Dragons.. St george Dragons, still have and U/16s and U 18s that feed into the Dragons Toyota cup side and the NRL side..until this year Shellharbour dragons were the NSW Cup side.OK Now West tigers.. West Tigers have also 2 districts feeding into one.. you have Balmain tigers and also Western suburbs Magpies.. these 2 foundation clubs still field teams in the U/16s and the U/18s plus both have their NSW cup sides. the Central Coast Bears will be 2 areas feeding into the one; North Sydney Bears, and Central Coast?? possibly the Cubs will feed into the Toyota cup side and the NRL side known as the central Coast Bears..shall I continue to explain it.. I really don't mind.. :-) and the 23 junior clubs on the north shore and the CC will be Bears juniors..which will feed into the junior rep sides..

No Manly are the northern beaches.. if you put togther the councils of the Central Coast and north shore combined then you will be able to work out the population.. the catchment area of the Central Coast Bears is from Kirribilli to Lake munmorrah..go to the map on the official CCBears site.. now, you can find out through the census what the populations are of all those councils..including Wyong council, Gosford council, Hornsby council, Kuringai council, willoughby council, north sydney council , and to an extent Mosman hows that for starters and thats why we can claim 1million in our catchment area.. gosford city is where the Bears stadium is.. which they will play every home game except for the heritage round which will be played at North Sydney Oval against Manly.. this is an oval that the North sydney Bears have played at since 1910..North sydney Bears will feed into the Central Coast Bears Toyota cup and NRL side, as will the Central Coast rep sides..16s and 18s..it's really not that hard to work out..

can someone tell me how the Central Coast can claim a 1 million population base? Sydney is 4.5mill and has a team in the north - Manly. Newcastle has 500,000 and has a team. What towns does the CCBears cover?

Mate it's going to come down to who has the most financial and best business plan and who has the most prospect of surviving..and sustaining an NRL club for all time..you have not much idea when you say gosford is small, thats like saying Ipswich is small?? It's a Central Coast bid and regional area, and I guess once again we will have to continue to explain. the CCBears bid will take in the catchment area of the North Shore and the Central Coast.. an area with a pop of 1million people..an area without their own team in the NRL to represent them. Gosford is incredibly close to Sydney?? so what so is Geelong to Melbourne.. the AFL expanded in to big AFL territories before moving into not so strong areas.. the exception was Swans , move or die..the only risk I think the AFL have done is with the GWS team..the others including, Brisbane and Gold Coast did have and do have a healthy AFL following.. Southport sharks have huge memberships.. WA, Adelaide have always been strong AFL areas otherwise, why would they have not put 2 teams in each area.. Only WA should be admitted in 2013?? no Turbo.... you are wrong on this one.. WA and CC should be admitted in 2013.. and Qld after that, and I think thats how it will pan out..as it's away also to put the final nail in the super league war by admitting a SL team and an ARL team that were remoevd due to the war..and I think this is something the NRL are keen to move on from.. and this will show that now it's time to move on..get these 2 areas sorted finally then they can move onto Qld for a new era..otherwise they well know the Bears issue will continue to fester and fester away as it has done for 10 years.. CCBs will pass 4500 financial members this weekend..how are the other bids going..our original goal of 5000 will possibly be passed by Xmas.. and maybe 7000 when our bid goes in in March, and 10 000 when announcement is made in June/july..then watch it jump after that ..

I think a Central Coast team would be a backward step, here’s why: * there are already 11 teams in NSW/ACT. Qld has 3…do we need another NSW team? * Gosford is small, it would represent the smallest population base in the NRL. * Gosford is incredibly close to Sydney, about an hour away. * Gosford ppl already watch NRL on TV – this is not a new market therefore not expansion. * The AFL expanded into 2 big NRL population areas…the NRL responds by putting a team in its own backyard?!?!!?!?!? Nothing at all makes sense about a Central Coast team! Except their decent stadium. Only Perth should be accepted for 2013 and hopefully 2 Sydney clubs merge in the meantime.

Denby, please do not categorise rugby league fans. Rugby league in this country is the peoples game. If you walk into a large room of league supporters you may come across a wide section of backgrounds. In my time as a league supporter, I have met people who are world famous actors, writers, scientists, academics. My group of league friends include top academics in the fields of law, politics, business & economics, for example. Another contender for the Independent commission i read is rugby league fanatic and Stanford university academic George foster.

Gee somebody has been reading way too much Roy Masters and Phil Gould......meanwhile back on planet reality - in any given week of the football season (bar the 3 weeks of Rugby League's State of Origin) the AFL attracts approximately 30% more viewers than the NRL on the '5 capital city' comparison basis (ie how many people watch club games). Funnily enough the NRL broadcast rights deal is worth around 30% less than the AFL rights based on the last negotiations - the hard viewing data and published contract values line up about where you'd expect. Perhaps the NRL could get a extra for spinning 3 state of origins off separately (and maybe they wouldn't?) but whatever happens the State of Origin can't deliver an extra 30% (and nor can any of the 'country viewer' nonsense that Roy Masters rattles on about). Gallop has tried to explain all of this before but RL supporters never seem to listen, and in fact he was savaged in the media when he tried to explain. When it comes to the ratings that matter to advertisers ('5 capital city' rating) the NRL is way off the pace. Another objective measure of how far behind the NRL is that its teams get around 30% less from their major club sponsors compared to AFL teams (there's that 30% number again) - how do you explain this? Are all 16 NRL going around and each underselling themselves?? - of course not!!. The NRL sponsors simply don't pay as much as they would have to pay an AFL team because the NRL TV audience that will see their logo is smaller (much smaller) than an AFL TV audience. Bring on the new independent commission!!..I'm sick of hearing all the excuses and conspiracy theories.

Still 90% of the AFL support comes from the southern states.... RL - AUSTRALIA"S MOST WATCHED SPORT "The NRL received a wonderful end of year present when it was revealed it's the most television sport in Australia, but in reality it exposes the incompetence at the NRL as the game has been sold for basically petty cash. The NRL went past the AFL as the most viewed sport on the box this year and that's a wonderful achievement considering the AFL is telecast on free-to-air four times a week across six states and two territories whereas the NRL is only on three times a week in just two states and one territory. The coverage that Channel Seven, Channel Ten and One Sport gives the AFL on free-to-air television leaves Channel Nine's coverage of Rugby League for absolutely dead. Fox Sports may cover four or five NRL games a week live, but its coverage and commitment to the sport is nothing compared to the effort they put into AFL and Soccer. So for Rugby League to defeat the AFL despite the obstacles put in front of it by Channel Nine and Fox Sports is a remarkable effort. The victory by Rugby League should be sending alarm signals to the NRL, who sold the broadcasting rights for next to nothing when really the game should be receiving the top dollar by a country mile and the negotiations should be on the NRL's terms. David Gallop's tenure as NRL leader has been an abject failure on many fronts since he came into power in 2002. None more so than Gallop allowing Channel Nine and Fox Sports in the television media and 2GB in the radio media to stampede all over him and treat our wonderful game as a joke. That in comparison to the respect the AFL is showed by Channel Seven, Channel Ten, One Sport and Fox Sports is laughable, but the NRL in four less states and one less territory enjoys the greater number of viewers. Anyone involved in selling the TV rights down the drain should be the first people removed from the new commission along with the blazer wearers and junket freeloaders from the ARL, NSWRL, CRL and QRL. The new commission (or even NRL) has to use the strength of the sport on television as the major negotiation tool for ensuring the code is sold for the billions and not millions that it should be going for. The NRL should be sold for nearly double to what the AFL is sold for and the NRL has to seriously look at ensuring that Channel Seven, Channel Ten and One Sport are the three main bidders for the sport. Rugby League is the strongest and best sport in Australia by a long-shot and has been so remarkable in that it has always been let down by incompetent officials at the top along with a minority group of players that have no respect for the game, the people and the decision making by playing up off the field. http://www.rleague.com/db/article.php?id=35140

Mark Geyer in the sun herald today saying the Central Coast and Western Australia should be the next 2 teams in... after yesterday with the amount of support we were getting on the Central Coast with our membership drive, and toots, thumbs up, smiles and waves from the CC residents.. then yes the CC are the ones needed in this competition..plus over 4200 financial members can't be wrong...

Wookie the whole tone of the article, and the title, is a moan about RL deserving $1 billion for its TV rights (the same as the AFL is hoping to get). There's not a snowballs chance in hell of RL receiving $1 billion nor any hope of matching the AFL deal (whatever it is)..... Masters whole argument is grounded on illogical premises and deep down I think even he realises he's churning out BS (at least I hope he realises this is what he's doing).

I don't understand how a valid catchment area ,affects an NRL teams viability.Easts have proven this not to be the case. And the Sg George Ill example is not exactly correct,as both clubs within the merged side ,retain the same catchment areas, albeit the illawarra is the bigger and the club still plays out of both locales. In the case of Manly they are majority privately owned, the chances of them facing financial failure are slim at best. Denby. Champ the statement "laughed out of court " when refering to the Nths v Manly exhibition game, was just a play on words.Lighten up,its a debate, not pistols at dawn, not learning scrummaging .
