Sudanese player racially abused: report

By Greg Buckle / Roar Guru

AFL club North Melbourne’s Sudanese recruit Majak Daw is believed to have been racially abused while playing for VFL feeder team Werribee on Saturday.

North Melbourne made a brief comment to AAP on Saturday night, following reports a male spectator had been ejected from the Port Melbourne ground after an incident of racial abuse directed towards Daw.

Werribee officials were furious at the man’s outburst and had the spectator removed by ground security shortly after quarter-time, according to a Herald Sun report.

“North Melbourne is unable to make any comment with police now looking into the matter,” the Kangaroos said in a statement.

The 195cm Daw, 20, is in his second season with Werribee and plays as a ruckman-forward.

The incident is sure to cause concern at AFL House and comes after Hawthorn’s star forward Lance Franklin was racially abused during an AFL match earlier this year in Launceston.

To stay in this country a immigrant usually has to have permanent residence, which is not easy to get now. When that is granted then if he wishes to he can apply for citizenship. There is no onus on him to do so currently to take citizenship. So the question is really irrelevant whether he (Majak Daw) is a citizen or not. He has residency.

I'm no AFL fan, but that's kind of like saying that soccer is a late comer to the concept of civilisation because there are so many reports of its armies of uncivilised fans... ie a little nonsensical.

What's the relevance? "It almost suggests he’s exclusively come to Australia to play A.F.L." Does it? Why? Whats your problem with a Sudanese born person playing Australian football? This better be good.

Bondy, you've said yourself that his citizenship has nothing to do with the story - that you're just curious! Of course you're curious - you're curious to know how you can label the kid 'unAustralian' and diminish him in others people's eyes while you smell of roses. Bondy a racist? No way! it was just a citizenship query ... It's not clever Bondy, it's just a cheap and nasty. You're opening gambit -- "It almost suggests he’s exclusively come to Australia to play A.F.L." -- tells us what we really need to know, which is that some people are happy to make a fool of their fake identities to get a nasty point across. Majak Daw isn't a fake identity, Bondy, he's a real kid and he's a special one too -- he's trying to better his community. He could teach you a lot you obviously don't know.

There's some really odd discussion on this thread. This article on the Daw family from the Melbourne Herald Sun a couple of weeks back is worth revisiting : http://aap.newscentre.com.au/acci/110522/library/pacia/25732158.html Majak has 7 siblings, 2 were born during the 3 years in Egypt after leaving Sudan, and youngest brother Ajak was born in Melbourne. It was via a brother of a friend (of father William) acting as a sponsor that the family was encourage to apply and were accepted to Australia. William was very keen to get out of Sudan, the civil war of the Muslim North vs the native and mainly christian South had made it a not very safe place to raise a family - or even to work as a teacher where William was under suspicion. ........ so suggest he'd come to Australia purely to play footy for North Melbourne is a bit odd? Or the question of his citizenship status?? re the racial abuse, what is most apparent is the isolated nature of such incidents now. And that they are NOT accepted. People are ejected, banned etc. And that on field - there appear no serious issues. It's restricted to individuals. It comes down to how much people around them are now willing to complain and have those anti-social and hurtful behaviours stopped. And that's happening. So, in many respects - this is a good news story. However, there'll always be idiots.

It's just an expression. "to soccer" is an accepted verb in Australian English that has a specific meaning in Australian Football and the rugby codes. Green would have had to go high because he can't risk the ball touching anyone - an Australian Football goal must be from the boot of the attacking team only, it cannot be tainted by anything else in its passage through the big sticks. A "deflection" would result in a minor score.

How was Brad Green's a "soccer style" goal? It would have gone metres over the crossbar.

Where was the compliment? to the RL player, but Ok whatever.... I've heard AFL commentators say several times that was a rugby league tackle or type of play. But let's just remember a program called the Sunday Roast on Ch 9 in Sydney, a rugby league show I beleive where Mark Geyer & Gus Gould both high profile people threatened to walk off the set if AFL was shown again. :)

The Cattery. You know how many footballing associations there are around the Globe but cannot clarify a very simple question is Majak Daw an Australian Citizen . Yes or No . If somebody cannot clarify whether Majak Daw is an Australian Citizen then he musn't be one then.

actually not so - however these days it's more likely a reference to Kieran Jack's father, Karmichael Hunt's previous career or the like - however, there have certainly been mentions of other sports at times, such as any 'soccer' style goal (Brad Green on Friday night another example), a Union style rolling maul situation or a League style tackle (gang tackle). I have seen the odd comment of scoring a 'try' when someone has effectively placed the ball out of bounds or over the line for a rushed behind. It happens. As per the other way though - not all that commonly. Similar to a cricket commentator commenting about a soccer goalie style gully catch or an AFL style 'mark' in the outfield. It happens now and then.

Yesterday's storm v rabbitohs game on nine, rabs Warren said a high catch by Dave Taylor "would have done Collingwood proud". There is no fear from most league people to mention other codes but you wouldn't dare hear league mentioned or complimented during an AFL game.

Uncle Bob An absolute load of bollocks. Not one iota of racism at all.Just an argument about Hunt kicking a goal on a rugby league show.As one balanced person on the Offsiders noted,I can't imagine rugby league being discussed on an AFL show.Caroline Wilson carried on a treat ,as per usual. In fact the Offsiders loaded with AFL panel fans, did not mention the racism issue in the VFL,whether by intent or översight".If the same had occurred in a lower rl comp, it would be open season. Racism happens in all sports by the odd loonie, and he orshe , should be publicly shamed.

"similar in many aspects"? Only a cretin could possibly equate racial abuse with the so called bad-mouthing of another code, or to extend the hyperbole, the way that the VFL/AFL and the media have behaved over decades towards association football in this country is akin to multiple attempts at genocide.

Rubbish. One disgraceful spectator here and there does not equal a large amount. This bloke summarily thrown out of the ground by the Police as other spectactors did not tolerate it. Majak was surrounded with support from both clubs, players and admins. The code has a large number of spectators, unfortunately there will always be the odd idiot.
