Australia-Japan clash to test Ben Buckley's promotional skills

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

The FFA have a number big issues they’re dealing with, including the A-League, the next media deal and the upcoming Asian Cup, but promoting the Socceroos vs Japan is a big one they need to focus on.

On June 12th, Australia play Japan in Brisbane when all players should be free baring injury. It will be mid-season for the AFL and NRL and will be played on a Tuesday night, clashing with no other competition.

The live Asian audience for this match is expected to exceed 500 million.

This match could become Australia’s most sought-after international contest, beating both the Ashes and All Back matches.

There is even a rumour that SBS may broadcast the match live.

I am sure every football writer in every media outlet will start talking this match up. And it needs to be talked up, promoted and well marketed to the Australian public at large.

Who is capable for talking up this match? The journalists will but they can only do so much.

Like his AFL, NRL and Super Rugby counterparts Ben Buckley needs to get out in the media and talk about this match.

Big ratings for this match will affect the next media deal. Further promoting a Asian nation at sport and the overseas audience will help the Asian Cup in 2015.

It is the role of the CEO of a sport to do this. The best promoter in world sport is UFC president Dana White. The man has more than 2 million twitter followers and the UFC is one of the best hype machines in sport.

The lack of communication and public speaking by Ben is his biggest weakness in his role as CEO.

This game will be in a FIFA week, when players are not in club football, and on a competition-free night in middle of the AFL and NRL seasons.

Ben, sell the match to the Australian public

This is your test, I hope you pass with flying colours.

Match details: Socceroos vs Japan
Tuesday 12 June, 2012, Suncorp Stadium
Kick-Off: 8.00pm (AEST)

Advertisements for Wallabies v Wales are visible on this page. Where are the ads for Australia v Japan? I don't think the game is a sellout - tickets on first level are still available in the higher price categories. A failure to sellout would be a failure for FFA. Our rivalry with Japan is growing and anything but a full stadium for a meaningful encounter between the two would be an injustice. I hardly think empty seats will be available in Yokohoma one year from now, especially if the two teams are on the precipice of qualification.

Q R U related to Fozzie as he has a knack of turning everything he writes about into a technical argument ... you turn every post to anti Lowy ... reaching the stage where its not worth reading .... He [FL] goes in three and a bit years so you don't have long to wait...

Japan are very strong and it will be a tough game. We have to stop this guy, he's good, very good: http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/backofthenet/945/Shinji-Kagawa---Manchester-United-target/

QSAF you are an unbelievable moaner. Here's an article about promoting the Aust vs Japan match and you manage to turn it into a gripe about your share holdings (yeah, really relevant) and the good old GCU ... boring!

Haven't you worked it out yet? Ben Buckley is the fall guy for Frank Lowy. So Frank can step up to the plate and make a compromise to look like he is a genius. Ben Buckley's loyalty to Frank Lowy must be running very thin by now, and will drop Franky Lowy right in the crap very soon, then resign to go back to the AFL as payback..

Yes it's all bad with Frank Lowy as far as I'm concern. I've put my trust in this man for the last time. The day I can get my money back on the Westfield stock I hold, I'll be selling them immediately---he sold out on us stock holders there. The day I get my local Football club back I'll be happy, he sold us GCU supporters out there as well. The day an independent football commission replaces Frank Lowy to head up the FFA I'll be happy.

Probably part of the negotiation is to ask too much the first time and get what you really want at the end. The TV rights aren't owned by the FFA, they are owned by AFC as its a AFC WCQ, so not sure if SBS negotiated a deal with them. What about the radio rights?

Agree, lets see Buckley on the TV and chat shows like Dmetriou and Gallop. Its our biggest game of the WCQ campaign and a loss would be hard to swallow. There are plenty of ways to advertise the game that don't cost a cent - what about Buckley as a guest on the Brisbane footy show or good morning Brisbane. Where's Kyle patterson more likely - haven't heard boo from the FFA's media manager lately. What does he get paid for?

Bret I am not flying BB's colours the article is entirely questioning BB's ability to get out and promote the hell out of this match.. As to the offsiders re ABC radio .... I saw the show .... my rumour on the SBS broadcast is from inside SBS and its still a maybe not a certainty by any means .. Fox realise to increase their football ratings they need have some football FTA .... also the media rights for football needs to have a reasonable yardstick re expansion of the viewing audience from the next media deal.... Fox are thinking this could be the match BUT THEY also want a bit of coin for it... SBS are very keen to be the broadcaster for this match ... do they have the coin Fox want and will Fox use this match is all up in the air .... But my mate who works for SBS in a senior management role [non broadcasting being totally honest] says all parties are well past the first email and meetings ... but it could still come to nothing ... Q Still on the FL thing [even Fozzies now backs him again].... the promotion of this game is a real test for BB not FL..... like AD from the AFL gets out and promotes the AFL key games as does DG in RL & JON in RU.... its not the AFL commission that does the door stops its AD and JON not the RRU board... so it's BB that has to do this.... and for me I am holding him accountable...

agree the game talks itself up, i don't see the CEO as the guy to do it either personally. I'd rather listen to players or coaches in the buildup rather than some suit. No offense suits! :)

Titus, I'm not sure, no. This was just Leachy's 'final observation' at the end of the show..

Are you sure the AFC doesn't own the rights? You would think if it was the FFA then it would be in their best interest to balance income with the benefits of exposure for the game.

Yes I heard that, another example of the lunacy of Frank Lowy. The same treatment he handed out to Nathan Tinkler.. Then on the 11 hour Frank will say it was BB fault and come to a adequate compromise... Sound familiar?

I think you talk up games that don't stand on their own, this game doesn't need talking up, it is a huge clash with so much at stake and should be some high quality, competitive football. Sure, the game needs widespread marketing and to be talked about but that goes without saying and for all matches. I also can't understand how SBS can broadcast it.
