Joubert to referee two Wallaby Tests

By David Lord / Expert

The IRB has done Robbie Deans, his Wallabies, and the Australian sporting public a huge favour by overlooking the two most controversial referees on the planet – Kiwi Bryce Lawrence and South African Jonathan Kaplan – for the four-Test home series in June.

Rugby World Cup final referee Craig Joubert will control the first and third Tests against Wales.

The South African is by far the best in an era of ordinary whistlers and is deserving of a series between the world number-two ranked Wallabies and the current Six-Nations Grand Slam champions.

The full appointments are:

June 5 v Scotland at Newcastle – referee Jaco Peyper (South Africa) – assistants Joubert, Keith Brown (NZ) and Kiwi Vinny Munro TMO.

June 9 v Wales at Suncorp – referee Joubert, Brown, Garratt Williamson (NZ) and Munro TMO.

June 16 v Wales at Etihad Stadium – referee Chris Pollock (NZ), Joubert, Williamson and Munro TMO.

June 23 v Wales at Allianz Stadium – referee Joubert, Peyper, Jonathon White (NZ) and Munro TMO.

Hardly rich buddy, just pure passion. The scheduling was just coincidence. Would it really have been brought up if they were playing Namibia? No it was because they were beaten. It's the world cup and you have to be prepared to back up in short times.

I think Joubert is a good referee. In fact the SH refs are a damn site better than the NH. Why? because they allow the game to flow, rather than picking a hole in every ruck, and maul. I don't understand some of these comments regarding the Nz final. NZ won it fair and square. albeit by one point. The French shouldn't have even been in the final, so essentially it was justified that NZ won. It was good to see those ponsey French players faces after they lost.

Apart from gifting NZ the RWC over a far more deserving French side on the day, Joubert is definetely a good ref. Any ref that you dont really notice but communicates effectively with the players is good in my book.

"Rugby is a game with differing ref interpretations but thats not what they (or you its seems) are saying." Yes I am saying that the extent of possible ref interpretations is a problem for the game. NZ won the game and the RWC, move on. But that such an important game can create so much debate and conjecture (and cast a shadow over the win) is not good....not good for the game of rugby. I think the extent of latitude for refs to interpret and nuance the laws has too frequently, since professionalism, led to controversial outcomes sometimes affecting legitimacy of results. This is what I take from the RWC final and that in no way is a comment upon the legitimacy of NZs achievement. I'd like to see NZRU take the lead with IRB in fixing the problem - narrowing the refs' influence on outcomes.

Of course it bloody did - the Assistant refs were right behind the posts in the best position of anyone in the ground to judge whether it passed outside or inside. But people love a good story - see how many people seem to think that Stephen Donald missed in the final....

The other Welsh lock jumped off Frank Oliver's shoulder from memory. The funny thing was, Oliver was also planning to dive.

Stuff Happens; NZ's weekly show Re;Union did some work on the video of that kick......extended the goalposts etc and finally concluded that it did indeed miss.

Mania-----the penalty wasn't actually for Haden-although he did appear to 'dive'.Quittendon I think it was ,awarded the penalty for another infringement.Also-it wouldn't have been "their 1st victory" having beaten us as recently as 1953 ;-)

And many people - when actually closely analysing the decisions Joubert made rather than relying on gut feeling - have concluded he was fine. http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=auto&tl=en&twu=1&u=http://www.lerugbynistere.fr/news/le-debrief-de-joel-jutge--vis-ma-vie-de-craig-joubert--.php&usg=ALkJrhjxC9Y9bcNwx0YnnVFOduqPi74YVg

The comments on that youtube clip are amazing. I really do think that most rugby fans are actually unaware of the laws of the game to any meaningful extent, their knowledge seems very rudimentary. As does the opinion of Matt Williams.

Read/Para. Para was penalised because play went his way. It is dishonest to say it is anything but that. However, the great surprise came at the end of the clip, when the Pie-Eater came up. Pieter Van Vyl, the spectator who tackled the ref, only to have his nose broken by Ritchie McCaw. Thanks for that, Stuff Happens.

Same people that would've laughed off AB fans suggestion that Cardiff 07 was a similar situation i would think too. Most people around the world seemed to think NZ fans had it wrong complaining bout Barnes that day if I remember, a great deal even believed the myth that Graham Henry had publicly blamed him too. Myths can be hard to overcome sometimes

Trouble is though, assessments made at the time are often incorrect. The game must be watched several times to really see whats going on away from the heat of the moment.

Well that video up there contains many inaccurate and simply wrong assessments. Ive highlighted two, but theres more. Simply saying that something went on but not actually giving examples for others to assess isn't really making a point worth its weight surely Moreton? Rugby is a game with differing ref interpretations but thats not what they (or you its seems) are saying. They are essentially saying the AB's didn't deserve to win by the rugby they played, they were gifted the win by Joubert and glossing over it by offering platitudes such as 'great team down the ages etc' doesn't cover that up. Surely thats tarnishing the game more than fronting up and pointing out the obvious errors in the analysis?

This video is rubbish and could be put together for any Test with every Referee. It is completely bias with one agenda and that's what makes it a farce. You can quite easily put the same piece together with the complete opposite agenda. The only people that love this are those that love to see the All Blacks lose!

As a Welsh supporter I agree with you about the Samoa match & the appointment of Owens was stupid. In virtually every RWC the Islander teams are ditzed. However in the South Africa /Wales match there was the famous Hook penalty that was deemed not have gone through the posts. Strangely I met a South African lad who had been behind the posts with his family & he said it they all thought it was a goal. This was just a mistake by the officials which may have cost Wales the match, although I noticed there were very few replays afterwards. These unfortunate incidents happen in all sports and are completely different from the issue of Joubert in the Final or Lawrence in the 'Boks/Australia 1/4 which are the real worry.
