Price would have led players off in Origin

By Wayne Heming / Expert

Blues legend Ray Price says he would have walked the NSW Origin team off Etihad Stadium in protest at Greg Inglis’ controversial try if he’d been the captain.

NSW skipper Paul Gallen vented his anger to the match officials after video referee Sean Hampstead flashed the green light for Inglis’ crucial try.

“Mate, this is out of control. This is ridiculous where this is getting,” fumed Gallen.

Not since referee Mick Stone correctly awarded a try to NSW centre Mark McGaw at Lang Park in the opening game of the 1987 series has a try generated so much anger or debate.

And dual international Price was adamant Hampstead got it wrong with his ruling after NSW hooker Robbie Farah’s leg had dislodged the ball from a falling Inglis’ grasp.

“If I had been Paul Gallen last night I would have walked the players off the field after that decision,” Price told AAP on Thursday.

“It’s been done before, captains have taken their players off the field.

“I can’t for the life of me see how they got a try out of that when he (Inglis) fumbled the ball.

“It hit his forearm and he’s fumbled the ball. That’s a knock on, how on earth do you give a try for that?”

But Price also said NSW had to become a lot more creative if they wanted to beat Queensland.

“In Origin you have have to bring all your surprises and use them, NSW don’t.

“It’s boring football when you keep watching second man, second man.

“For Christ’s sake, be inventive, try something different.”

Price said rookie No.6 Todd Carney had been a failure but admitted it would be difficult for coach Ricky Stuart to make changes for game two in Sydney on June 13.

“At Origin you need everyone to fire at the same time and again they didn’t,” said Price.

“We went into the game with a halves combination they thought would win the game but I don’t think they did much at all.

“I know Carney is a brilliant player when he wants to be and he can win you a game but he showed last night he can also lose you a game too.

“His goal kicking was crap and he didn’t get them firing and that’s got to come down to pressure.”

Price would like to see Brisbane’s Peter Wallace recalled in the halves but didn’t think selectors would over-react to the loss.

“You’ve got to give them all a kick in the arse and let them know their heads are on the block if they don’t win in Sydney,” he said.

Sorry, I missed the point that you were actually confused about to whom the article was referring when you then used the colourful terms of "spoilt show pony brat" in your post. The article actually meant Ray Price, one of the toughest, highest regarded, and best locks to ever play the game for both state and country. He wasn't called "Mr Perpetual Motion" for nothing. But you must have thought the article was referring to Steve Price - the ex-QLD prop. Sorry, my error in missing your confusion in my first response...... hahaha....

Yep, that's why Gallen has represented NSW and Australia so many times.... what about yourself? Agree though that maybe there is a better choice as captain and the only coach that I think is capable of helping NSW is Gus.....

Well, you wouldn't know what it's like to be a spoilt show-pony brat, beacause within the context of playing league for your state and your country - as Ray Price has done many times - you are a nobody. And like all nobodies, your opinion on what sort of a person he was or wasn't is like a drop of water in the Pacific - meaningless. Maybe Ray shouldn't have said those things as it gives the prancy little QLD supporters another excuse to try and blow their own trumpets. Although he is one of my favourite players, I think Ray might have lost it somewhat though as well. I saw him on The Game Plan a few weeks ago and he looked like he was either drunk or has finally succumbed to all the big hits he put on the Qld players and opposition within the league,,,,

QLD "nicking" NSW players since the 80's. Have you forgotten Michael O'Connor (your top points scorer) and Peter Sterling? People in glass houses?

Ben, please tell us which NSW players have been 'nicked' . Inglis plays for Qld because apparently his parents believed he would have a better chance of rep honours in Queensland. Also, who is the NZer in the team ? Civoniceva came to Qld before he turned one year of age , from Fiji. Thaiday was born in Sydney, but is from Thursday Island, which is part of Qld.

wouldn't it be great for the game if every time a ref made a decision -- OFF went the team that didn't like it!. Senility is obviously setting in on some of these old fools. Can I ask the equally silly press not to print comments from crazies!.. I am a neutral observer when it comes to Origin, I love the game and see equal bad decisions for both sides, That is sport, If you want to see real bad decisions in reffing/Judging/Umpiring, -- watch the Olympics were a single person's efforts are judged by a panel of judges.. some of their scores are not only bad, they are blatant cheating. In Ballroom dancing and Skating the commentators will say things lie "Once the judges see more of this person, they will start to get the better scores!)... bring it on NINE, but for the rest of the season give us our League with all its faults. Geez I am starting to waffle on a bit myself .. I had better talk to the press, maybe one reporter will be silly enough to blow my comments out of all proportion and print this drivel.. --- (I wonder if Ray Price even said that)!!!!

There's already enough of this sh*t in the game, like Jarryd Hayne's "nonviolent resistance" when he took a knee and cried to the ref, or Johnathan Thurston's thespianism when he copped a tap on the jaw from Hayne. No player is bigger than the game, crying about it is not going to change that.

Yes Wally, well said mate. Look, i tend to think league teaches you alot about life, it can be a great learning game for kids who are a little wayward. But to hear Price say this, unbelievable. I hope he is not a coach for any kids. Imagine saying to kids, just walk off if the ref penalises you. The last time i seen Pricey was in a straight jacket on a couch watching origin, lets hope they keep him their, this is one dinosaur we cant afford to dig up. I will go one step further, you look at Pricey, then you look at Parra, then you understand the mess they are in, another example, you look at Jennings you look at the Panthers. You look at Joey, you look at the Knights, all these clubs have massive problems that need sorting out, at least the knights brought in Bennett. Joey's comments are like a animal tamer wanting to release wild animals on the public, the guy is crazy.

Ray appears to be suffering from RDS, or to give it its full name, Relevance Deprivation Syndrome. Whingers such as Ray are happy to blame the referee, and ignore blunders such as those by Jennings (whose action left his team a man down for 10 minutes), Bird, (dangerous tackle) and Carney failing to find touch from a penalty and losing the ball cold in a tackle. A bit of balance would lend credibility to his comments. Fanciful, I know.

To Ray great player in his time, but now he has lost touch with reality, its exit stage left. It is still a sport and at times the refs decisions don't go the right way, however once the final siren/whistle sounds that is the end of it . Taking a team off the field is just about one of the most reprehensible deeds, one can do on a sporting field. Never, ever.

I can't believe more is not mate made of it. People bag the Waratahs for not being adventurous and continuing to lose. The blues are just as bad. They're coached to just complete the set get to the kick and try and force a mistake. We've got to bring more to the table than that. In 3 of the last 4 games NSW have played their most enterprising football in the 70th to 80th minute when the game is gone.

Very ill judged response from Ray. What sort of an example does that give to kids around the country? "I will only stay on the paddock if the ref makes the decision I think is right" is not really within the spirit of the game Ray is it? And as for Paul, someone should give him a copy of "How to win friends and influence people" He asked one ref "How many origins have you reffed?" after a decision went against him. He abused them after the Inglis try. Generally speaking he showed nothing but dissent and disrespect to the Refs all match. He is a disgraceful captain. It is a shame because he is hard as nails and a good footballer But it is hardly surprising he is the Captain. He is in the mould of Ricky Stuart who, you will recall, carried on like a spoilt child when the Kangaroos lost to NZ in a World Cup Final a few years ago. Not only did he abuse the ref and officials of the League roundly on the field after the game but repeated his churlish performance in the Hotel they were staying in the next morning. He could even blame heat of the moment for that one. The people who chose Stuart and Gallen in those positions condone their conduct by not removing them. Rugby League deserves better than that.

They've been crying for 6 years okiee. Always someone elses fault but theirs. The truth is, is they're not good enough....and it's not their fault. Gus Gould said it best lasty year : "When team of champions also happens to be a champion team, the result is a foregone conclusion" Nothing can be done about it until the QLD core retire. But in the meantime, ain't it fun watching them cry and squirm and blame everyone under the sun but themselves.
