SBS to show Socceroos vs Jordan on free-to-air [updated]

By The Roar / Editor

SBS will broadcast the important Jordan vs Australia 2014 World Cup Qualifier from Amman, in a move that will bring the national team back to free-to-air.

The Roar understands that SBS will show upcoming Socceroos World Cup Qualifier games on a one hour delay in what appears to be part of a new deal which will also bring one live A-League fixture per week and a highlights package to free-to-air for the first time.

Football Federation Australia is yet to announce any information, but this may indicate that this is part of negotiations for a new TV deal with Fox Sports and free-to-air broadcasters.

The match kicks off at 2am AEST, with the delayed broadcast from 2:30am on SBS One (kick-off at 3am).

The Roar will have live scores of the event.

UPDATE: FFA have made the following announcement –

FFA, FOX SPORTS and Foxtel and SBS have today announced that the FIFA 2014 World Cup Asian qualification match between the Socceroos and Jordan in Amman this Wednesday morning will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS and on a one hour delay by SBS.

Exclusively live coverage of the match will be broadcast on FOX SPORTS 3HD and FOX SPORTS 3 from 1.30am AEST Wednesday. The SBS coverage will commence on SBS ONE at 2.30am AEST.

“I thank our long-term partners FOX SPORTS and Foxtel for accommodating this arrangement,” said FFA CEO Ben Buckley. “Australian football would not have achieved so much growth and development since 2005 without the significant investment of Fox Sports.

“I welcome SBS’s support in broadcasting Wednesday’s match. SBS has a rich history in covering domestic and international Australian football.

”FFA is currently in ongoing discussions with Fox Sports and SBS over the long-term broadcast rights in Australian football.

“The discussions have reached an advanced stage and the parties have displayed good faith, which has allowed this one-off arrangement for Wednesday’s match.”

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, welcomed the announcement.

“For the good of the game I congratulate everyone involved in showing the Socceroo game tomorrow morning,” Senator Conroy said. “It’s great to see that all Australian football fans will have the chance to cheer on their Socceroos as they work to qualify for the World Cup.”“

There is no replay at 7am. Someone thought the random language news is better to put on all morning.

where you getting that mail from? very interested in the online component and, in particular, the junior NT sides. can't tell you how tiresome it is trying to find decent quality streams to watch AFC u16 championships etc. $60-70m a year sounds high to me, and goes against the opinions of many sports media analysts etc. hope you're right for what it's worth!

Fuss 60 or 70 million with Socceroos FTA and one A-League match FTA would be .... just so ... unbelievable ... I would sent in a couple of dollars for BB's retirement party present...

I've been consistently hearing the total deal: a) PayTv b) FTA Tv c) online For * HAL (140 matches on PayTV, 32 on FTA TV) * AUS NT (10-12 matches on PayTv, 10-12 matches on FTA TV) * online (140 HAL matches, 10-12 AUS NT matches, AUS WNT, AUS u17, u20, u23 - male & female) will be $60-70m/year.

This is smart for everyone. People who dont have Foxtel and want to watch the game simply stream the games from illegal sites and dont consider the exclusive rights as an incentive to get foxtel. So this gives foxtel some extra money they wouldnt otherwise get. It improves the viewing enjoyment of those streamers cause usually the quality isnt so good and it also helps spread the game in the long term (because barely anyone outside of Perth will stay up to watch this) by setting good foundations for a FTA Foxtel mix television rights for the next deal.

Are you suggesting JOR v AUS kick-off at 2:00 a.m. on a school/work morning will achieve ratings of 80k on Foxtel? What historical evidence are you using to arrive at that bullish (note: "ish" after "bull") forecast? Based on my analysis of the AUS football market, I'd expect a WCQ involving the AUS NT that kicks off at 2:30 am to achieve ratings of: * Foxtel: 20k (about 33% of the average HAL ratings, which are broadcast in prime time on week-ends) * SBS: 50-60k (2.5-3 x Foxtel ratings) Of course, your bullish prognostication of 80k ratings on Foxtel & 320k on FTA Tv is in total contrast to your pessimistic postings about Football broadcasts in AUS.

Now, now careful there - is that 'Del Piero has agreed to go over final terms' type deal is done, or the deal is *done* and they have actually inked the deal and we'll get a simulcast on Foxsports (in English) and SBS (in Italian)? :-P

40 million is very very low ... I can only hope SBS actually realise that to grow football the revenue stream must grow...

There has to be an FTA component in the next deal because of the new anti-siphoning laws. Looks like it was between SBS and Ten and SBS won. Thank God - hopefully an end to the swiping at the A-League by SBS journalists and commentators. Ten probably gets more viewers and would have been better if they won, but then again they might move it till after midnight if the ratings aren't good enough. I'm sure SBS will change their attitude to the A-League now with players like Del Piero in it and give it a decent showing. Will be interesting to see what the final figure is but $40M a year seems a bit low. Let the league be self sufficient and stand on its own two feet and not rely on mega media money, which will be their downfall in the end of the other two wasteful competitions.
