Welcome back Potter: can Mick tame the Tigers?

By Chris Chard / Expert

For those too young or who have no desire to watch John Travolta play any role other than pretending to be Nicholas Cage in Face/Off, the TV series Welcome back Kotter was a mildly amusing romp.

In it the titular character, Mr Kotter, returned to his alma mater to teach an unruly bunch of delinquents known as ‘the Sweathogs’.

While rugby league coach Michael Potter may not have to put up with the wise-cracking Vinnie Barbarino or the uptight Vice Principal Woodman on his return to Sydney’s west, he is unfortunately soon to inherit a group that would make the Sweathogs look like the products of a strict Christian military reform school.

It usually takes a lot to steal the post-season overhaul column inches from the Roosters and Parramatta, but the Tigers have given it a bloody good crack this year.

There’s been some beautiful moments haven’t there?

Eight board meetings to decide to offer coach Tim Sheens the chance to quit his career and take up the job of working the hot dog cart out the front of Leichardt Oval. Beau Ryan and Chris ‘Pommy’ Heighington packing up and heading east for 2013.

Lote Tuqiri moving to sign a new contract faster than he’s moved since 2004.

Finally though it seems as if the Tigers board have made the decision to go ahead and give the green light to Potter, a man who must be starting to wonder if he’s been cursed by the football gods after his last club Bradford went broke during his stay, his boofhead Dragon teammates cost him an Australian World Cup spot in ’92 and now he’s being flick passed to the shambolic Tigers.

For a club that seems to have been thereabouts for a long time now, Wests suddenly have a bit of a whiff of the downward slide about them.

While he may have been used to turning a steampig’s ear into a silk purse at penniless Bradford, can Potter convince Braith Anasta to not play five eighth? Maybe have Benji Marshall let the rest of his team know before he’s going to do it?

And can he work out what Tim Moltzen’s supposed to be doing?

These are serious questions for serious times.

On a plus with the Tigers gun under-20s team Potter will have a fine base to draw on, and if he can get the best out of Bodene Thompson and a resurgent Eddie Pettybourne, Wests are capable of packing a good Sunday crowd in on the hill at Campbo and Leichardt if nothing else.

It is likely though that any significant results are going to take time, something that there’s less of in the NRL than tattoo free biceps.

Fellow former Super League gun coach Brian Mclennan’s swift exit from the Warriors in September showed that there’s no special treatment for former heroes, and that a couple of ‘Coach of the Year’ gongs aren’t much to hide behind at an angry press conference.

Personally though I’d like to wish Mr Potter all the best in his endeavours at Wests. He seems a likeable chap, was a great player and has achieved to date some good coaching results among extenuating circumstances.

Whether or not he can get his Sweathogs turning up on time and handing in their homework, though, remains to be seen.

Totally agree benji needs to be halfback with Sironen at five eight we won all but one with that combination and that was a close loss to the dogs . But like last yr the reality is like every team in the comp injuries are the key. So lack of money to spend on injury and fitness management will effect the club as it does every club. The clubs winning were the clubs wi the most scientific approach to injury management -dogs, manly, storm, souths(thanks to McGuire)

Also important to point out that Potts took over a new franchise and took them up the ladder and into the Challenge Cup final. Walters just gave positions to his broncos bum-chums like Shane "I played outside Lockyer!" Perry and drove Catalans straight to the wooden spoon. And as for the fact that Walters now works under Bellamy at the Storm: well, I think all Parra fans will know where I am going with this one...

Great article Chris. As a Tiges fan I am heartenned that we will get a fresh face into the leadership role. There are numerous stones we could all throw at the Tiges season (lets be honest I could pave my driveway with their number already), though I assert that the most common root cause is our teams headspace. The tiges ability to turn up week in week out, half in half out, 20 min period to 20 minute period is the foundation of sand that our performances start from. If our new club coach can put his hand up and say - I am talented at both coaching the body and the mind. A trainer, trains the body. We need a exceptional people leader who can get more mental application more consistently out of a very very talented roster. I will chear the man. Club strategy is difficult. Our fans are ruthless in their criticism. We expect glory, and we want it now. Our new coach must come out and say, 2013 is a rebuilding year. Brave listed companies do it regularly. The take an earnings holiday to invest for the future. Our club strategy must move from trying to score on every play, and trying to win every season (constantly moving players), towards picking a team balanced between young and mature that can be built into a force for the future. Doing this means we will finish in the bottom half again. I for one am ok with that - as long as I can see the team building and players developing. Players with undeniable talent that will be super stars in 2+ years. Siro. Tedesco. Koribete. U 20's Prop (name escapes me) Players with some hurdles but the ability: Miller, Groat, Murdock + about 4 other current u20's players. Some small comments on above. Moltzen is not a utility (unfortunately) in that he needs a few games to settle into each position and as pointed out above plays his best football only when he is confident - not instantly off the bench. Seems like a nice guy, but probably needs to go to Melbourne / Bulldogs / Newcastle to have any chance of being better than a journeyman. I like Anasta at Lock, but I just can't see him giving us a premiership in the halves. He never gets the defensive credit he deserves. He is rock solid. Benji to play half - now now don't boo at the screen. Siro will be unstoppable at 6'5" in the halves. Please don't play him off the bench. Anasta to defend on Benji's inside. Benji needs to commit in defense. His head is aways too high. Benji - watch a video of a young foul being raised. They desensatize to human touch by touching it constantly. You need to do something similar with your head. Boxing has worked for many (quite extreme though). Yes that is an out there one. Fears for next year - one prop short unless one of the U20's guys steps up. Blair not playing to his potential - I think he will though. Lawrence proving to be injury prone - lots on injuries all through junior footy. Coach moving players around based on short term form, and not medium term potential. Come on Potter - come to the Tiges!

Rixy , I have been watching Moltzen closely over the last few years. He is error prone and a confidence player. The only time he has a decent game is when he has scored a few tries , backing up a half break or a Benji bit of magic. To me that means stick him on at halfback or dummy half (from the bench) if we have to. Tedesco at fullback , Miller no. 7 and Moltzen on the bench. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].

like all clubs whose coaches are on small money i cant see how someone on less than than what the players earn can really bring authority to the team. A coach should be the most important person at a club next to the cheif executive.

Thank you Wests Tigers administration for taking the searing spotlight away from Base Camp Rooster. Thank you Chris for using the oft-underrated word 'titular.'

Well Steve to be fair they both did coach Catalans in the Super League, with with Walters ending with a 37% win rate and Potter a 48% Sounds like it was a tough call though, would want to be after how long its taken Cheers CC

Wests will perform much better next year without Sheens than with, that is a given. Regardless of the disruptions this year, having Sheens gone is the best thing that could have happened for both Sheens and the Tigers players.

I think Moltzen has been getting a bad rap. I know he was absolutely woeful this year but in 2011 he was one of our best players. There is a reason why the Dragons and Tigers had a tug of war over him and that's because he's a good player. Not sure of his position though. Tedesco should be the starting fullback so he needs to start performing as a half.

I agree 110% Sean. I would love for Miller to be given the position. He is a good kicker in general play and a very handy goalkicker. The Tigers kicking in general play is always a shambles. Either straight down the fullback's throat or a nothing kick. The worst in the comp. I have no idea what they will do with Moltzen. He is a huge liability. His last line of defense is horrible. He makes so many mistakes. He lets the ball bounce all the time at the last minute then looks at the winger. Under any kind of kick he is a basket case. And my favourite : kicks out on the full from the kick off (straight after a try so the opposite team are on the attack again). I wish he went to Saints after all. Now we are stuck with him for another 3 seasons. Thanks Benji...one for the boys? I would rather have Kerry Hemsley playing NOW than Moltzen at halfback!

The major problem at the Tigers is that they dont have a half. If they release Miller to go to the Titans then the club is an absolute disgrace and the board needs to be held accountable! The kid can play footy but was never given a chance by Sheens. All they need is someone who can kick and take some pressure off Marshall and Farah in attack and they will be fine. Remember Lui in 2010? He started slow but Sheens persisted and by finals was firing and we ended up a field goal away from a gf (even though the bloke couldnt tackle a pensioner!) Forget Moltzen, he was a Sheens favourite and should be farmed out!

I'm hoping once the ARLC hire Sheens as the fulltime coach of Australia, he can leave quietly. Remember the Aussie league team is the only major code without a fulltime coach, which is understandable as there is only a few games a season. But next year is the WC and we need a fulltime coach to take on the might of Lebanon, Cook Islands, Italy, Scotland.

Well said. But there are wispers of Miller being released which would be very sad if it was to keep Moltzen. Hopefully Potter can convince Anasta and Lote that they need to retire as Menzies is the only player over 40 that deserves to still be playing. But the biggest coup would be if he can hire a defence coach.... Go the Mighty Tigers.

Bless this mess. I hope Potter does take the job. Then we can start to use players in their positions. This means basket-case Moltzen will have to play at halfback, next to Benji. Tedesco at fullback. Anasta lock. Jennings (hopefully) with Lawrence in the centres. Marika Koribete on one wing. Lote or Utai on the other wing : Nofoaluma from the U/20's would be my choice but the odd re-signing of Lote might have a positive effect on the young cubs. Lote has something to prove in his final year , his last 2 has been jittery and injury prone and hugely over paid. He needs to be confident under any type of kick early as the opposition knows he is a weakness in that area. With Woods , Farah & Galloway upfront , the Tigers have one of the best front rows. Combined with Pettyborne,Blair(who needs to step up), Fulton & Anasta - the Tigers look well balance. The U/20's just won the Toyota cup so the ability and depth is waiting in the wings. If you throw on the bench Sironen & Miller, Murdoch-Marsilla & Bodene Thompson the Tigers could be anything. Come to think of it, the Tigers are always anything. It is common knowledge the Tigers don't like to be favourites for any match let alone the premiership. They will love being the underdogsl next year. No pressure.
