2013: The Wright time for Cronulla?

By Ryan Selvage / Roar Guru

As Shane Flanagan undoubtedly mulls over the prospects and pressures of the 2013 NRL season, one thing remains to be seen.

Do two Wrights make a wrong?

Of course, I am referring to new recruit Jonathan Wright and stand in fullback Matthew Wright, who filled the attacking void of the injured Nathan Gardner for the majority of 2012.

However with the key acquisition of Penrith flyer Michael Gordon, Matthew looks unlikely to retain the number one shirt come round one in 2013.

Beau Ryan has been all-but guaranteed a spot on the right wing, partnering Ben Pomeroy on a flank boasting the experience and creativity of halfback Jeff Robson.

Robson too had a stand out 2012 season in the Sutherland shire.

Boom youngster Ricky Leutele had a stellar end to 2012, cementing a centre position in Pomeroy’s suspension-forced absence.

Most notably, he scored a try in the dying stages of a round 25 clash against Souths which won them the match and confirmed Cronulla’s position in the final top eight.

Throw in the seemingly forgotten local talent of Stewart Mills and Nathan Stapleton and the coach definitely has a lot to consider.

Both Jonathan and Matthew Wright have played on the wing and in the centres in the previous two seasons for their respective clubs.

However now it appears the pair look set to battle it out for the left wing role.

Flanagan, upon securing the services of the former Canterbury star, told the Sydney Morning Herald, “he is comfortable playing centre or wing and had a great year in what was obviously a pretty good Bulldogs side”.

To accompany Flanagan’s praise, Matthew Wright appears hard pressed to obtain a starting role, having just scored just one try in 2012.

For the sake of Cronulla’s genuine premiership credentials in the coming season, the playing roster and fans alike hope the Sharks boss makes the ‘Wright’ decision.

Takes 17 players to get you a premiership Luke M. not one. Ask Ken Irvine, probably the greatest Australian winger, who had to move to Manly before he retired to ensure he won a premiership. I've watched quite a few Penrith games and it seems to me that Lewis was consistently one of your best, and certainly tried hard to get his team motivated. Sure he is getting older, but I suspect he's still got a few years at the top and with Gallen and a few other top forwards they've gained, they are looking very strong. Gordon could be anything if he stays fit and I think as long as their half stays fit, they'll give the 2013 premiership a real shake. Not sure if they'll win the trophy but wouldnt be surprised if they did.

Everyone is getting carried away with the Sharks i think. I am a Penrith fan but Lewis never really carried us to glory and is now older and more injury prone. Flash Gordon is a fantastic talent but is also injury prone. Heighington is on the downward slope and Ryan is not exactly a match winner. Carney has never had 2 good years in a row, and if he loses form Robson is not the man to carry the Sharks attack. Gallen is starting to show signs of his body breaking down and their starting front rowers are getting on in age, and one is carrying a surgically repaired neck. They will be a good team but i don't think premiership contenders. Fifita on the other hand, could be an absolute star if he reaches his potential.

Pomeroy is slow in attack and sefence and gives away a lot of penalties.

Jono Wright is a big lad and quick but he stops whenever he gets to the defensive line. There are times when he's bringing the ball back that you want him to build up a head of steam and charge into the defensive line but he stops and puts on the twinkle toes.

As stated...it's the best centre combination we've probably got at this point for the balance of the team. I think we still need a world class centre to increase our chances of winning the comp but other teams have done with less. I don't think too many people rated the Tigers backline as a bunch of superstars when they won the comp? Pommeroy is a worry, hot and cold too much, by now he should be a quality dependable topline first grader but sadly all you do is cross your fingers each game that he will hold up his end of the bargain. Ricky Leutele is on the improve and given his limited number of games last year, his stats are pretty good. On percentages, the best of the backs. He can score tries, young, strong and not slow, all those ingredients needed now. The coach is kidding if he thinks Jonathan Wright is a centre, his best position would be Wing. Stewart Mills is a really good player but injures himself more than an aged care nurse. Good luck Sharkies.....the time is now. Get it done.

Dishes having said what I said about 130 players most teams have 3 to 6 players that will need to step up due salary cap contraints.

Jonathon did not look out of place in a star studded dogs back line, and Matt (without being great) was solid at the back last year.

Centre pairing has always been a problem for the Sharks ever since the ET days. If Pommeroy can somehow improve his ball handling and position himself better in defence, and be a guide for his less experienced centre partner, then they could match it with most teams. I look at the guys in the Raiderss backline, they seem to know when to back up,they smell breaks, and they have decent ball control. The only trouble on occasions they get too excited when they create a chink in the defense. Lewis could fill in ,in the centre if need be. In reality if you don't have the forwards to propel the team forward and soften the defense and create opportunities, even a team of great backs would find the going tough.

they have improved their squad considerably, if it was like US sports they would definitely trade a back rower for an outside back. surely they could swap one of bukuya, tupou or heignington for another centre/ wing?

I disagree peeeko. He was quite good in 2012 and provided very solid support for Carney.

You shouldn't call him a 'star'. As soon as I read this fringe First Grader called a star I lost all interest. Cut it out mate. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].

If the wright boys don't step up the sharks have the option of Gordon in the centres and Gardner at fullback.

Thomas agree in most clubs the Wrights would 1.30pm players. All the olde school fans will know what I mean.

Both Wright boys are not really FG standard.

Sharks would win the comp if you had to play 12 second rowers and a five eight.

The sharks this year have something that they have lacked for a long time and that is depth. My 17 would look like this and in brackets are the players that can fill in. I certainly think they can challenge for the title and top 4 would be the starting goal. 1. Gardner (Gordon) 2. Gordon (Stapleton) 3. Pomeroy (Leutele) 4. J.Wright (M.Wright) 5. Ryan (Mills) 6. Todd Carney 7. Robson (Townsend) 8. Gibbs (Fafita) 9. De Gois (Morris) 10. Ross (Green) 11. Lewis (Graham) 12. Heighington (Tupou) 13. Gallen 14. Fafita (Taufua) 15. Graham (Tagatese) 16. Tupou (Bukuya) 17. Morris (Lichaa) There are only really 2 players that are irreplaceable and they are Paul Gallen and Todd Carney. The squad they have assembled is certainly one of the better ones in the competition.

Obviously we have recruited well and I can't complain - but here goes... We still have far too many backrowers. The truth is we have to find the perfect combination in the backline, and while Pomeroy is solid I'm still not convinced he is a game breaker. I wouldn't mind someone versatile like Wade Graham in the centres. In any case it obviously it will b a disaster if we don't make the 8. GO THE SHARKS

Sharks will be very tough this year and should make the top 4 . But they don't have enough class in the outside backs to win the comp .

Decent side except the centre pairing. Will prob stop the Sharks from being a eal contender but they should challenge for the top 4 if as you say TC fires but i have my doubts about that.
