Is Dugan what the Broncos need?

By Michael Waldron / Roar Rookie

Let me preface this by stating that I’m an unabashed Broncos fan – ever since I knew what footy was, I’ve followed the Broncos. And we have a problem at the moment, we can’t score points.

Currently our point differential is 0 and quite frankly, that’s disappointing.

We defeated a team that may be in the running for the spoon but that’s nothing to write home about.

There is a potential solution – Josh Dugan. Undeniably talented, however lacks discipline. There is speculation that Dugan may be heading to Brisbane to join the Broncos. Is he a good fit for Brisbane?

A quick look in the rear-view mirror tells us the Broncos generally run a hard line against players who aren’t up to the disciplinary standards held at the club.

Ask Ian Lacey, Dane Gagai, John Te Reo, Neville Costigan or Brett Seymour, who were all sacked for discipline or alcohol-related reasons.

Wayne Bennett started the trend and disciples Ivan Henjak and Anthony Griffin have followed through as well. An ill-disciplined player can have an infectious negative impact on the squad as a whole and with only one win under the belt, is that what the Broncos really need?

There is potential value in taking on players that have left the beaten track. Todd Carney has, after his two chances at the Roosters and Canberra, shown the form he is capable of, while keeping himself relatively out of trouble. Gagai had the best game of his career against the Tigers in round one prior to getting injured and Costigan played Origin after he left Brisbane.

The risk you run is obvious however – if the player continues his poor decision making, you may have negative publicity or even worse, a Blake Ferguson-type accomplice and a breakdown of team culture.

The Broncos current squad needs are thus – we lack depth at fullback and wing. With Dale Copley and Jharal Yow Yeh injured (word is it may be a career ending injury for Yow Yeh), Jordan Kahu being too green and Denan Kemp on the outer, he could easily slot in to wing with his pace and movement.

At fullback, Corey Norman will be moving to Parramatta next year and with Josh Hoffman needed on the wing, he could be the preferred long-term option in the number one.

If he comes our way, can the old guard at the Broncos get Dugan on the right track? Possibly, but as a Broncos fan, I don’t want to see another player slip through and have another team take advantage.

The worst case scenario is he gets sacked at season’s end and life goes on as we know it. The NRL will need to vet any contract but provided they approve, we should be grabbing the opportunity to sign him with both hands.

The move makes financial sense as well, given the Broncos have a staggering 26 players off-contract at the end of this year. One would assume Dugan won’t attract top dollar under these circumstances.

But if you end up joining us in the Sunshine State, do us a favour Josh – stay off the Cruisers.

Is Josh Dugan the answer for the broncos - maybe/maybe not... For the greater good of the club and to show confidence in Hoffman we should be putting him to fullback. The harsh reality is that Norman has opted to go elsewhere so I think the Broncos should make a statement and drop him to Qld cup. Unfortunately at the moment as other posters have mentioned we don't have the troops as the experienced albeit young players (like copely, yow yeh) are on the injury list.

"Do the Broncos need Josh Dugan ?" Good and Great players are always in high demand , Dugan could be one of these , however the Broncos have a roster already that can trouble the rest of the competition high fliers , do they need to employ , what could turn out to be more trouble . They are already ready to turn their backs on players like Cory Norman who . a few years ago , was hailed as Darren Lockyers' replacement . They will pay a rediculous fee for Dugan , if they get him , and for what , like a girl is preparewd to marry someone who theats her badly in the hope she can change him , it rarely works . Look at what their present roster did last night with the storm , do you think Dugan will ever display that gtrit .

I'm not convinced that Dugan can solve our attacking problems, but I do think he's worth speaking with and sussing out. I am however, excited to read that Broncos have finally admitted that they need to scan the market and look to recruit from outside the club. Even though this should have happened 2 years ago (when Carney was available), better late than never. One thing I do know, is that Corey Norman is not worth it. He's slow, has no ideas in attack and can't defend. Certainly not someone the Broncos should be hoping can fill the #6 jersey. In the end, I do think Brisbane can clean up Dugan's attitude. It's worth a shot.

Oikee, the wading pool at Southbank is already eerily yellow. The other things you describe though about the pushbikes and ducks are pretty scary though. I didn't know Dugan had a bird fetish. With the Reece Robinson thing, you could say the same about other players we've lost like Winterstein at Cowboys or Gagai at Knights. Do you think resigning one of those guys would cause us to immediately score tries? I highly doubt it. They're not in the same 'league' as superstars like Inglis, Barba and Slater for example (at least not yet). What makes them (Winterstein, Gagai and Robinson) look good is the quality and quantity of ball they're getting. I'm not bagging Wallace and Prince, I think they're trying hard and as Thaiday said in a press release the other day, they need time to gel. But trying hard doesn't always win football games (you can even ask Locky that), so I think if this combo doesn't gel by a few weeks time (and even if it does is Prince only staying for a year??) then we need to buy a superstar half like Cherry-Evans. Either that or give Hunt a good go there. And likewise with Norman at fullback, if he's not going great guns in a few weeks; give Capewell a go there.

Dylan, I'm not sure about panicking too early. Our current form is ominously similar to the back half of the 2012 season where we won one game, due to an almost total lack of ability to score points. Our forwards are hard working and can generally hold their own but our backs have failed to score points for the last 15 games or so. I totally agree that Ben Hunt should get the "6" jersey. I fear however that as he has been shunted as a replacement hooker for 15-20 minutes a game for the past 3 seasons he too will sign shortly with someone else. Our recruiment has been abysmal ever since Cyril died. As there is no salary cap on what you pay your recruitment officer and the Broncos are a wealthy club, I don't understand why we don't offer the Storm or Doggies' recruiter double their current salary. Problem in large part solved (maybe).

Dugan is not the x-factor, the Broncos had the x-Factor in Reece robinson, they let him go to canberra where now he is the real x-factor, while they are laughing all the way to the bank, the Broncos will never win anything while Dugan is on their books, we just went from good to worse. He will do a few good things, then the injuries will arrive, the late nights, no turning up to training, ducks going missing out of the city ponds. Pushbikes not reuturned before dusk, and the wading pool at southbank with a earily yellow colour to it. Not long now Broncos, the bottom is creeping up fast. I just wonder who will go first, Dugan or griffith, my money has to go to Griffith, he is already clutching at straws and just lost our best junior prospect.

Most of you guys are panicking too early. The Broncos have 7-8 CURRENT international/origin players. The problem is, most of them are Second/Front rowers. We are one of the better defenders in the comp. There is no "deep and dark" problem at the Broncos. We are just lacking a young stud in the backline. Hodges can be brilliant, but he is getting old and has always been injury prone, therefore cannot be relied on. Wallace is a park footballer, and Prince is the worst signing we have made all decade.. he's been old and washed up for the last 2 years. The number 6 jersey should be worn by Ben Hunt. Having said that, Dugan IS one of those players who can create the spark we are missing in attack. The kid is 22, give him a chance... I think he will thrive at the Broncos where 40K+ fans show up every week, his intentions are clearly to get back to representative football, and he knows the Broncos won't put up with crap from him.

Josh Dugan is the X - Factor that brisbane are lacking. Wallace needs dropping, Prince to 7, Norman to 6.

I agree that Dugan is worth the risk as he has an X-factor and can score points!! Either Dugan or Norman could replace Reed in the centres.

let there be no doubt that Josh Dugan in race horse terms is a Group 1 performer. The Broncos desperately need a player of Dugan's skills into their spine. I agree it is a risk, but they have no hope without him. The best thing that could happen for 2013 would be for Norman to leave and Dugan come in. With Dugan at 1 and a fit Hodges and McGuire back and the Broncos will have a different look. Exactly 12 months ago Inglis moved to fullback for Souths and you saw what happened, the same thing could happen at Suncorp.

Hopefully the change of culture and the fact he'd be on a life line might change his attitude. He has a lot of talent, but whenever he gets tackled. He grimaces in pain. We get that enough from our back line :(

Broncos dont need a bloke who loves getting into the grog and leaves his 6-month pregnant girlfriend. This wouldnt have happened under Bennett's watch.

Broncos probably need an attacking player however should heed the lessons of the Lions with Fevola, that was a disaster. Until Duggan realises that the NRL is his only chance of making $500k pa he will be a loose cannon. Ideally let him sweat for a while before making any commitment.

Why are we not thinking of moving Hodgo to fullback. I guess it is because we have no other backline talent. Dugan is not the player for the Broncs, blokes who thumb their nose at the team have always been moved on from the Broncs, not the other way round. We need a half back and 5/8 and, well lets be frank, we need players in every position except the back row and maybe hooker. The Broncs are the poster child for modern professionalism, good athletes who are never allowed to take any sort of risk. Griffen has basically stated that he isn't concerned with how the team attacks as long as they defend well.

wallace and princeare not the problem the problem is our centres and wingers other than hodges dont run lines they never run onto the ball and wallace is left to take the tackle .norman is very lazy and never supports any player i was athe roosters game and watched minni runnng everytime his payers had the ball and then watched norman in the backgrund when we had the ball fixing his jersey parra are going to love him now they have 2 of laziest footballers in the game. griifin has to stop putting his toyota cup players on a pedastool because he took them to a grandfinal they are not good enough for first grade .the biggest problem we have is our talent scout we are losing the best youngsters to other teams we have not brought up a superstar since lockyer were are they for gods sake we have a whole state to choose from!

Like oikee, I agree that the Broncos' problems go way beyond who wears the "Number 1" jersey. Without big props to bend the line and halves who can be creative (Prince, can be; Wallace, No) or break the line themselves (Prince and Wallace, No) the fullback and outside backs won't see the ball and/or open space. At present we have a pack of backrowers, who lack any mongrel, and old / non-creative halves and a back-rower (Reed) at one centre. We do have talent and speed on the wings (Hoffman, Maranta) but they NEVER see the ball, except to ruck it out form dummy-half. The club and coaches have become incredibly conservative. A perfect illustration of their mindset was last week when they replaced Justin Hodges with David Stagg swapping with Gillett, both, you guessed it, backrowers!! We've lost our most talented players over the past few years and anyone who shows a bit of individuality. If you don't believe me, ask yourself, would Alan Langer get a run in the current Broncos set-up? (1) He doesn't have the build of the perfect athlete that the Broncos insist on, (2) Would the club tolerate his larrikin ways? (3) He played what was in front of him and the modern Broncos seem to prefer a plan formulated by the coach. It's gunna be a long year. Hopefully we'll be so embarrassed by the Storm that they might try something new.

The Broncos will be the second club to feel Dugans wrath. These guys normally go through 3 clubs before they come good. It will be a complete waste of time and effort. The Broncos youth policy is in tatters. Teo, Beale, Norman, all gone. Now we are left with looking towards the market to find players. This club has fallen apart. They should have bought decent players like other clubs, let the youth move on and buy thwem back once they become good players at other clubs, because they are not becoming good players at the Broncos, this team cant even score points. Wallace needs to go along with reed, both are park footy players, Queensl;and cup material. Someone has to tell the truth, the longer we cotton ball these park footballers, the further the club will fall. The Cowboys , the Warriors, along with the Broncos all need sorting, and all 3 clubs bring juniors through who have not been made to fight for their spots, or sent packing. I know it sounds hard, but it can turn them into better players. Bennett could make these tough calls. Griffith is mothering these park footballers.
