Landmark ratings victory for A-League

By Matt Bungard / Roar Guru

It was a gigantic victory for football off the pitch yesterday as the A-League Grand Final shattered the ratings for the past three years by nearly 50%.

According to Mediaweek, yesterday’s Fox Sports broadcast saw 297,000 Australians tune in, completely blowing last year’s tally of 200,400 out of the water.

Without wanting to turn this into a code war, yesterday’s figures were roughly 70,000 more than the Essendon/GWS AFL game, 100,000 than Kangaroos/Lions and more than double Adelaide/Western Bulldogs.

In fact, the A-League almost claimed the biggest scalp of all, coming within 20,000 of out-rating Channel 9’s vaunted Sunday Rugby League broadcast.

The City-Country game ratings were down by over 150,000, which emphasises both the success the Wanderers have had in bringing new fans to the game and the contempt with which NRL fans have come to treat that relatively pointless fixture.

And unlike previous seasons, it’s the first time the Grand Final has been the highest rating sports program of the afternoon. In previous seasons, they have been beaten out by AFL and NRL broadcasts.

This is not an attempt to derail any other sport, but rather to celebrate how far the A-League has come in such a small time – the Wanderers proving on and off the field to be a blueprint for a successful expansion franchise.

This landmark ratings success just solidifies that the A-League is more than just a passing fancy, and is here to stay. And thanks to everyone who followed along with our blog on The Roar yesterday!

Ahhhhhh, News Limited at its evil agenda against rugby...... Of course, when football fans with a preponderance of evidence suggest this they are ridiculed by the likes of you.

Is 30 million larger than the AFL figures cited above by Zach? I'll just get my calculator.

As per AZ's post... Over 29 games (incl finals) the table is: CCM - 60 pts (29+ GD) WSW - 60 pts (21+ GD)

Are there any estimates on the global audience of the final? Given Shinji Ono was playing, and some of the guys would be hosehold names in China and India, could it get over 100M viewers globally?

It takes me roughly 50 minute train trip then 20 minute walk to get to the stadium from Epping, which is near the Northernmost part of Sydney. So it's a fair way, but not too bad. Parramatta on the other hand for Wanderers fans is only a 20 minute car trip in no traffic.

Yes, but in saying that the AFL get what, $200m a year? $1b over 5 years or whatever it is? And we get $160m over 4 years? I'd take half a billion dollars for half the ratings, which is about what we get. What's your point? Also fk MCG/ANZ, football is for football stadiums not cricket and ARF paddocks.

Mazzalenko I should have added mainly because it was an isolated exception not the norm.

Sorry MV Dave Towser is right....the only NSL grand finals that I can recall which was hyped up in the lead up to the game was the 1997 GF between Brisbane and Sydney United & the 2000 GF between Perth & Wollongong. The key to both games was that both finals had one 'non-ethnic' club that represented a whole city and that city got behind it. Interesting to note also was both those GF's was played in May deep into the AFL & NRL seasons! In any event I cannot recall our code getting the street cred we are getting now....NSL lovers can say what they want and pour scorn all they like but the facts are we are growing but we need to stop blowing wind up our asses. David Gallops comments today that our code is now bigger than cricket (diring summer months) will only make the wogball hating bogans more enraged. We should learn to mind our own business and get on with improving our code each season and not worry what the other codes or sports are doing.

Ange Postecolgou says the grand final is bigger and more important. and not disagreeing with hutchinson, of course its harder to finish 1st after 27 rounds than continue winning in the extension of the season that is the finals series. that doesn't mean they didnt want it. the mariners players, fans and arnold wanted to win that grand final badly. they will enjoy the title of champions while WSW enjoy the title of premiers.

The game was played at Allianz because of the Billy Joel concert on at ANZ over the weekend, which was the preferred choice of the FFA if wanderers made the final because of its proximity to Parramatta. I would bet my house on it that if it was played at ANZ they would have pushed 60,000. On a disappointing note, sitting in the eastern grandstand on Sunday i and can tell you that the 3,000 odd people who didnt turn up were members, i saw almost 2 full bays in the members section which were empty. It would have been good if those members who had no interest in going could have sold their tickets to someone who wanted to be there. Its happened a few times now at a few different venues (AAMI, Parra) and i think this is the next logical step to ensure we get proper sell-outs more frequently.

Fair enough It may sound silly to some but ... ... I'll pay more attention to what A-League players tell me about how they view the Premiership & Championship in the A-League competition, than anyone who never has played A-League football.

Very interesting - we should be able to crack 10,000,000 total viewers next year then!

Oh I realise that. It's unimportant but just seems a bit silly, even for Fuss. I can stand on my milk crate in the street all day screaming that I'm Jesus and the sky is green...but it doesn't make it so.

You won't change Fuss' opinion. Even though it has been this way for a very long time and will continue to be around much longer until perhaps we are all gone.

From a poster on 442 129 out of 135 H&A matches - only missing 6 matches. So, these results should be close to accurate. http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z347/JoeDavola1/TVratings_zps0f569b6f.jpg

From the Terror... A-League grand final tops pay TV ratings http://www.news.com.au/sport/football/a-league-grand-final-tops-pay-tv-ratings/story-fndkzvnd-1226626180108 THE most successful season in A-League history was capped off with a record TV audience for Sunday's grand final. Some 297,000 people tuned in to watch Western Sydney and Central Coast, while 42,102 people attended the match at Allianz Stadium. Wanderers coach Tony Popovic believes the sport has now earned the respect of other codes in Australia. "We've certainly arrived and I'm sure they're looking over their shoulders to see what we're doing and why we've improved so much," Popovic said yesterday. "But we've all got a part to play, all codes can fit in. There is room for everyone and it's nice we're creating our own space and interest. "I think on the field the game has improved. I think it's a better spectacle, the quality of football is better. And I think off the field the way the clubs are run is improving, the fan base is improving." The 2012-13 season broke all sorts of records: IT was the highest-rating A-League season with an average audience of 81,000. The previous best was 70,000 in 2007-08; AVERAGE audiences were up 23 per cent from last season; GAMES were watched by more than 2.8 million viewers; IT had the highest-rating regular-season game ever - the 164,000 who watched the round-two clash between Sydney FC and Newcastle); IT had the three highest-rating rounds in A-League history - 109,000 (rd 1), 105,000 (rd 2) and 103,000 (rd 5). Football Federation Australia boss David Gallop said the sport had plenty of growth left. "The TV audience was up 39 per cent from last year, so that's encouraging," he said. "We are entering new media arrangements next year, where we will be covered by free-to-air and pay-television. That's an enormous growth opportunity, not only because nearly 100 per cent of households have free-to-air television, but it will also be a subscription drive for pay-television." Fox Sports chief executive Patrick Delany said the 296,000 audience was the icing on a breakthrough season. "We are delighted," Delany said. "It was up against the AFL and NRL and it was a very good number, as was the entire season. "The final was fabulous and the ratings number was one thing. But for the ground to be near capacity with the two sets of fans creating that atmosphere was another." Sydney continues to bask in the glow of the Wanderers' remarkable season and today Parramatta City Council hosts a street parade in their honour. The club's Red and Black Bloc fan group will feature, joining the 12.30pm celebratory parade from the Parramatta CBD to Prince Alfred Park.Popovic believes the RBB has raised the bar when it comes to supporting its club and attending games. "A new club has come in and our fans have played a huge part in elevating interest," Popovic said. "Hopefully we'll just get bigger and better and I think all clubs will hopefully be stronger and their fan base will try and rival ours."
