Rojas signs with VfB Stuttgart

By News / Wire

Exciting Melbourne Victory midfielder Marco Rojas has signed a four-year deal with German club VfB Stuttgart.

The Bundesliga side announced on Wednesday it had completed the free-transfer signing of the 21-year-old New Zealand international.

Rojas reportedly attracted interest from several European clubs, including heavyweights Liverpool and Juventus, after a stellar season which saw him crowned A-League player of the year.

He scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in his second season with the Victory, having joined from Wellington Phoenix.

“Marco has just been voted player of the year in Australia but that’s not the only reason we noticed him,” Stuttgart’s head of sports Fredi Bobic told the club’s website.

“He is a player who is well used to the attacking wide positions and provides speed.

“It will be interesting to see how quickly he can get used to the pace in Germany.”

Rojas said in a statement he was delighted with the move and looked forward to the challenge of stepping up to European football.

Stuttgart sit 12th in this season’s Bundesliga and are safe from relegation.

Rojas will join fellow former A-League players including Robbie Kruse, Mitch Langerak and Nikita Rukavytsya in Germany’s top flight.

Fuss, looks like Nichols has signed for the Victory. You see him as a replacement for Rojas?

Yep, bit of a pity to let your biggest asset go on a free transfer. Dunno why they didn't contract him for a couple more years with the promise he would go where he wants when they get a decent offer. VFB must be high fiving each other.

4 year deal? VfB will likely make some good coin out of him too, if they on-sell him before this contract expires.

Good move for the kid. He will love playing at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Stuttgart had poor season by their standards. Rojas will play a role in the rebuilding phase of the club.

Towser, I agree I thought Kruse wouldn't make pro in Germany, good luck to the kid.

Yes in line with other comments, its a step up that even though he's a kiwi he's an A-League product I hope he improves further to get decent match time. and its not lost on me there may be a few German clubs taking notice of Australian/A-League players. Distinct possibility that Ben Halloran may join those ranks in the Bundesliga. a gift that keeps giving now, more quality a-league players being noticed, more get offered contracts, more german clubs take note of a-league players coming in, they look more specifically at available talent in the a-league. etc. etc. It may not get the attention that the EPL gets in Australia but anyone who looks a bit deeper knows the Bundesliga is pushing for top spot IMO. an article from a couple of weeks ago - a memorandum of understanding between FFA and German football to share technical information. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/football/time-is-right-for-ffa-to-tap-into-german-juggernaut-20130426-2ijyh.html

Now the hard work mentally & physically begins for the lad. Whilst brilliant at times for Victory its still a major stepup. Then again I never thought Robbie Kruse could make it in Germany & at Rojas's age his head certainly wasn't in as good a place as the young Kiwi's seems to be. Shame though he is a Kiwi from Australia's perspective.

Still hopeful on Leckie making it...his loan team is currently in the play off hunt for promotion to the Bundesliga and he is getting plenty of game time.

Kruse and now Rojas at top draw bundesliga clubs...hopefully the timing of these deals will spur the other on. Which one will be first to truly break through and really impress? Signing is one thing... hoping its Kruse thats first to turn the step up signing wise into a true leap forward reputation wise.

I think that's important fuss England is not the most technical nor complete league throughout Europe as soon as people understand this the better, the epl is a show apart from the big 4 the bundesliga is where you get made as a pro player, hopefully other agents will take note. Apparently German is one of the hardest languages to learn too.

Here here, it's great news. Just need to up the game time of these lads. Hopefully there is a steady stream heading to Germany, Holland, France, Belgium over the next few years.

So, that makes it 7 players, who started their pro-careers in the A-League, now signed by German clubs: Rukavytsya at Mainz; Langerak & Amini at BVB; Kruse at Dusseldorf; Leckie at Monchengladbach (currently being loaned out); Marco at Stuttgart. Add Dario Vidosic (played 30 games for Nurnberg), that makes it exactly 1 player/year being noticed by, and signed to play in, the league that is currently considered the best on the planet. The whole world is now talking about the Bundesliga, which means our lads will now set their sights on Germany rather than England. And, that's going to be a massive plus for AUS football & the A-League brand.

I agree not as polished but I think he's shown the potential that could be taken to the next level. Don't forget Rojas's breakout season was this year and once again it came under AP. A full off-season under AP will aid the victory once again and he can now stamp his authority just that little more.

Totally agree, the German clubs are the go for the A-League players progression, especially those who game is based on skill, like Kruse, Amni & Rojas.

Was very impressed with Conor Pain last year, while not as polished as Rojas, had that ability to take on defenders & played without fear that he will be dropped the following week. This I think is one of AP's strengths.

I think everybody within the football community endorses this move. Some of these transfers out of the A League recently have been top draw.

Marco Rojas confirmed the interest from Liverpool and Juventud were nothing but rumours. Great signing though and I hope he does well. I wonder if Conor Pain will be the next Kruse/Rojas? AP does a pretty good job of getting the best out of these young talented players.
