Eels face $15,000 fine for Stuart outburst

By Darren Walton / Wire

Parramatta face a $15,000 fine after the NRL issued the Eels a breach notice following coach Ricky Stuart’s latest attack on referees’ boss Daniel Anderson.

Stuart labelled the 13-6 penalty count against Parramatta in Sunday’s 30-10 loss to South Sydney a disgrace and claimed most coaches in the league didn’t think Anderson was doing the right job.

“To keep my job, I don’t communicate with Daniel Anderson because I don’t agree with what he’s doing,” Stuart said.

“I know a lot of other coaches, or most, are the same in regards to my thoughts.”

The Eels have five business days to make submissions in relation to the breach notice.

“There are clear guidelines for coaches and officials in regards to commenting on decisions and they do not permit an attack on a match official’s character or integrity,” said the NRL general manager of football operations Nathan McGuirk in a statement.

“To question the competency of the match officials and the head of the referees in that manner is not acceptable.”

Parramatta have already been fined $10,000 this season for Stuart’s lambasting of Anderson after the Eels’ round-six loss to the Gold Coast.

“Since we played the Gold Coast and I had my little tantrum with the referees, we train with discipline,” Stuart said.

“I’ve tried to get the boys to live with discipline. We’ve worked that hard in regards to our discipline off the footy field at training.

“We cannot be so different every week to the opposition – not penalty counts but what we’re getting penalised for.

“Most of them are deserved but the same actions aren’t being penalised with the opposition team.

“We haven’t got a football team that can handle that … I’ve got to stand up and say that for the fans and the players.

“It wouldn’t be right of me if I didn’t.”

Stuart said coaches of the top sides were wary of criticising Anderson.

“I don’t know what his job description is, but I don’t believe it’s being fulfilled. It’s very, very frustrating,” he said.

“Sometimes the truth hurts. Sometimes people don’t like hearing what actually is happening out there.

“A lot of other coaches won’t say this because they’re all trying to fight (for) a spot for the eight and they don’t want to upset the apple cart.”

+1 If anyone brings the game into disrepute, it's the ref's & D Anderson. Ricky says Anderson has admitted to the continual ref errors time and again, and as Ricky says, nothing happens as a result. To me that begs a question ~ WHY?

The refs currently ball zing it up have been around a whie now so if they can't do the job sack em , biggest problem is this game is open to "interpretation " so my idea of ruck speed may not be the same as yours , my idea of a forward pass may not be te same as yours, one ref to start with and make the touch judges work instead of being mobile flag holders , that's a start

Pay was only pat of what I said, training is also an issue. Have you a better suggestion on how we attract high calibre people who will make good refs? Obviously your first idea is to pay them less, so lets start with that. Then what?

I never said that Ricky questioned Daniel Anderson's integrity, but since you raised it I agree that he didn't question either integrity or honesty. However, questioning integrity and honesty is just one of the rules that apply to comments about NRL officials. I didn't want a legal argument over whether Ricky's comments are in breach of the rules. You believe that they are OK. The NRL has found differently and they probably would have got legal advice to ensure they were within their rights to issue a fine. A brief read of the NRL Code Of Conduct reveals that questioning the competence of the referee is in breach of section 31 (making adverse public comment on an employee of the NRL, or a match official), or section 17(1) (abuse of an employee of the NRL. Abuse is defined to include insult), or section 14 (impair public confidence in the NRL). Take your pick.

They also need a count on second efforts. What do i mean, well where players come into the tackle and then make a second effort to keep the player on the ground for that extra tenth of a second. I was watching the Storm Titans game, (and it is not just them, Manly do this alot as well) but watching the Storm, nearly every tackle has a second effort, weather that be a extra grab, a hand on the player, a extra hold or even a slight push getting up, even grabbing the players jersey and holding it on the ground, all these little second efforts hold the play up. It is why you always see them try to put 3 in every tackle, it makes their second efforts easier. Hope i dont now destroy the way you watch a game, alot of teams use second effort plays. the Storm are excellent at this and is why a team without their stars still perform good against most teams. So refs should have a 3 second effort counter to stop this, ? what do i mean, well they can yell out, second effort, Bare with me, second effort 1, second effort 2, and if they do it again, which they shouldn't at that time, second effort 3 penalty is awarded. If they do it again the second effort count starts again, so instead of calling out serender or dominate, use the second effort calls. 3 second efforts close together then penalise them. They will soon stop doing this which is slowing the game to a crawl. Problem solved.

I was reading a interesting article on the rugby union blog earlier by a guy questioning the refs blowing the whistle to even the contests up or make them look closer than they really should be, In other words awarding penalties for no reason apart from he can do this and get away with it, no questions asked. Now, if you are a proffessional sport, as rugby league is and mind you is trying to be. I still dont think we are quite their yet, then introducing the Captains challenge is the only way this code can go, because not being able to challenge a wrong decision(mind you this is why a 100 billion dollar code like American NFL has this in their game) not being able to challenge that decision can be taken as match fixing. The sooner daniel or whoever is in charge introduces the Captians challenge the better, and believe me, it will be introduced for those very reasons i just pointed out. It will illiminate alot of the matchfixing guesswork and take pressure off not only the refs, but the players who have done nothing wrong and given away a penalty for no reason. This happens alot as well, and when and if it ever comes down to winning or losing, bad decisions need to be gone from the game. It not only is frustrating for players, but also for fans. We have a simple system sitting their ready to come into play, the sooner we get it up and running, the sooner we can all get use to it. amen.

If Ricky doesn't like it he should make some constructive criticism, like suggesting a coach or captain's challenge or something His whinging is tiring, the victim mentality doesn't bring the best out in the players. It was the same thing at the sharks

I understand they are a necessary evil but nit picky penalties destroyed the Warriors Vs Manly game for both teams. I watched the Souths Vs Parramatta game and it had a bit of the same problem. How about this just restart the set. Don't stop the game ..? Say penalty Zero tackle and keep going. A penalty stops the teams momentum and actually gives the offending side exactly what they want....

I don't understand why Sticky is being fined. He criticised daniel Anderson and simply said his team are getting a raw deal as the lower ranked team. He didnt blame the referees for his teams loss as souths were a better team but, believed there was bias in the penalty's awarded. I can't see the fine sticking to sticky. The media and public get upset when players and coaches don't speak their minds, they/we want them to speak honestly regarding the game but then get fines from the uptight protected officials of the game. This creates players like darius Boyd and lifeless coaches like Bennett.

Mate yes I would like to change the rules and allow coaches to have their say on the way they thought that their game was officiated without being fined , I would also like to see transparency from the refs when they make mistakes these guys are supposed to be professional , not bloody untouchable . And mate its not so much refs making mistakes its being consistent , when they have penalised a team and don't penalise the other team for doing exactly the same thing , this is the problem , and you can see this happen in any game you choose . And mate all payers are criticised if they play a bad game so why not the refs ,And come on Stuart has been bagged since day dot I don't think he would give a rat's about what Anderson says , it would be water of a ducks back . And mate where is Bennets team their not coming last , their has been more than one coach bag the way their team has been treated by the refs this year . But it seems when Stuart does it oh look out , for mine good on him .

Ricky is a whinger but he is correct that the lower teams get treated differently by NRL refs. Now the bigger picture to this is that the NRL wants Souths to be in the GF. It will get huge publicity, huge crowd as it is a Sydney team. Russell Crowe will be at the game and maybe the Dalai Lama etc etc.... The next big question is who will be the other team allowed in by the NRL. My guess is the Roosters...

Pomoz, lets correct your "facts". It isn't against the rules to comment on the officials, it is against the rules to question their integrity. In my opinion he was just questioning their competence, not integrity.

Great idea. And when coaches make poor decisions and select the wrong tactics and players we should dock their wages as well. When a player knocks on, misses a tackle or gives away a penalty we should fine them. It could be lucrative given how often people make mistakes. If we can put your idea in place we will have people queuing up to become referees so they can get their wages docked and be publicly denigrated by coaches. Awesome, where do I sign? Referees get dropped to lower grades when they don't perform, just like the players. If we want them to perform better, maybe we need to give them more training and increase their wages to attract higher calibre individuals.

Steve, OK let's talk about facts. I am not a "Sticky hater" as you put it but I'm not a fan either, but he does have form when it comes to criticising refs. The problem is, it is against the NRL rules to make comments about the referee. That is a fact. Ricky broke the rules. That is a fact. The example he has set to his players is, "it is OK to break the rules if you are not happy with something". His comments about Anderson are rude, personal and highlight Ricky's arrogance and paranoia. How would Ricky like it if Daniel Anderson came out and said "I don't know what's in Ricky's job description is, but coaching isn't one of them. I mean, his team are last. What a fool". Whether he is right and Daniel Anderson is not doing his job well, doesn't matter. If every time you didn't like an outcome you decided to break the rules, chaos would reign. You want to change the system and allow open slather on criticism. Referees make mistakes, that is a fact of life. Who in their right mind would want to be a referee if coaches were allowed to go around making disparaging comments about their performance constantly. It undermines their credibility and makes it harder for them to officiate. The last referees boss was heavily criticised and hounded out and now we are working on getting rid of the next one.

Pomoz I don't know how many games you have played or watched , but mate stick with the facts when making comments and leave your bias out of it , blind freddy could see that what Stuart was saying is true . Not just in the Parra game but across the board . The standard of refs of late is poor , you can pick any game on any weekend and see what Stuart is on about , its called consistency and a fair go which seem to allude the refs . We were promised that when Anderson took over that there would be big changes in the way the game was officiated , laying on the player after the tackle , nothing has changed , the strip , nothing , flat forward passes , the obstruction , laying around in the play the ball , stepping forward of the mark in the play the ball and and .Nothing has changed and Stuart is right and at least he has got the balls to say something . And mate I guess you didn't listen to what he had to say about the game , or your just another Sticky hater call a spade a spade . And who is allowed to say how it is and not get fined , the system is a joke and needs a massive overhaul , and mate I think people like yourself need to make an appointment with opsm and get your eyes checked and young players hate getting ripped of to , so unless someone in authority stands up and says something nothing is going to change .
