Bruno Cullen: NRL super sleuth

By Chris Chard / Expert

With his revelations on 7:30 the other night that a club with no CEO, no major sponsor and under investigation by the government wasn’t all that well run, Bruno Cullen has established himself as the NRL’s number one investigator.

So the big question is, where to next for Bruno P.I.?

Rugby league has long been a game of mystery. The phantom siren. The man in the bowler hat. Daniel Fitzhenry’s 190 first class games.

All riddles so perplexing that even Mulder and Scully would chuck them in the ‘too hard’ basket in favour of proving the existence of the reverse vampires from Uranus.

Bruno may be a while, off solving any of the great cold cases mentioned above, but right now as we speak there are a number of unusual phenomena in the NRL ripe for the Colombo Cullen treatment.

In the interest of closure and good practice I’m advocating the NRL give Cullen a deer stalker cap, a sidekick for comic relief and a licence to investigate at will, with the following cases being of superior importance.

The case of the magically appearing money
The Brisbane Broncos, rugby league’s wealthiest club, has been promised $3million and $5million respectively from the Federal government and opposition.

Does this timing have anything to do with the federal election, or the fact that many Brisbane electorates are marginally held seats?

And why wasn’t Tony Abbott charged for his shoulder charge on a bemused Shane Webcke at the press conference?

The case of the Dunemann deity
How is Andrew Dunemann now the most sort after individual in professional rugby league, despite not being seen since the mid-90s sporting a bad mullet and a win ratio akin to the Star Casino’s chocolate wheel?

And just how is he related to Don Furner?

The case of the droning Dragon
Exactly why are the St George Illawarra Dragons blowing up deluxe over the selection of untested Wests Tigers rookie youngster Luke Brooks for this weekend’s match?

And how will his appearance be any worse for rugby league than Braith Anasta at halfback or Benji Marshall chip kicking for himself on his own 20m line?

The case of the disappearing DCE
Despite forming half of a premiership-winning scrum base, being a representative star and the only likeable Manly player since Beaver Menzies, why is Daly Cherry-Evans under fire from the Sea Eagles Stewart brothers?

And would a David Gallop apology or growing a neckbeard somehow make it all go away?

The case of if you can’t beat em, buy em
At what stage of Phil Gould’s five year plan did buying an A-League team come into calculations for the Penrith Panthers?

And did this have anything to do with the impending arrival of Jamie Soward at Penrtih, or was it just an attempt to one up their rivals the Eels and their Parramatta Power relations?

Get to the bottom of a few of these bad boys Bruno and us fans will finally be able to get to sleep on the nights the Tigers aren’t on telly!

Actually, Nissan said in evidence ( in a case that had nothing to do with the Broncos or the NRL ) that he believed that Ken Talbot gave money to some Broncos players when they attended functions at premises which he owned, or had an interest in..... You posted the same information yourself....... Nissan did not give any actual evidence that anyone cheated the salary cap, because he was not asked that question, and more importantly he did not offer any evidence to support his comments. For his own reasons , he decided not to assist the NRL inquiry, and that was his right. You cannot draw any inference from anything he said or did, because it was never tested in Court.

Gutsy move calling Bruno a cheat..... Might be best to check your facts. I have known him since his days in Mt Isa and have never heard a bad word said about him.

When you read the newspaper articles regarding this claim, it states that Nissan refused to back up his claims , and Talbot is now deceased, so not sure how they proceeded with an investigation. And Shag on a rock , Cullen was the CEO when the claims were made, however he was not in charge when the payments were allegedly made. Bruno reported the claims to Schubert at the NRL salary cap section. If you really want to chase up old stories, try and find out why no-one was charged over the bets made on Melbourne getting the spoon, when only people at the NRL and the Storm would have been aware of the fact that the points were about to be stripped .

Can you name any? Broncos usually develop their own talent. Falou on his way to AFL comes to mind in recent times.

In actual fact the Gallen monies were within the totality of the salary cap 3rd party limits, and not in excess thereof. The reason they were fined ,it was not reported to the NRL as to the list of 3rd party payments.Just plain amateurish. The ABC did not clarify that point, but made it out to be underhanded stealthy whatever. They have done a similar thing with the Flanagan gym account. When the integrity Unit does their checking and finds nothing amiss with that, you belive the ABC will retract. Not on your nelly. The ABC at times needs to make sure they get they facts right, and not do the usual print media stuff of making their own interpretations. The bulk of their news story was not news, but a rehash and stories that have been out in the public arena since July. And we as taxpayers fund these gimps. We know the Corporate govenance was lacking and have known for months,ABC has a scoop (hic).

I think the important thing is that the player agents were saying it and it has been proved with Gallen and the Storm and gasnier..

The rise and rise of the Brisbane Broncos must be upon us, you can hear the squeals coming from all the wannabees (other codes) and even our own are ready to eat us. They can hand out millions, hundreds of millions for other codes, but if the Broncos are giving any love by players, superstars or pollies, all hell breaks loose. Fear, maybe it is fear holding this code back. Well be afraid, be very afraid, cause the Broncos are coming, commin to get ya. haha The Titanic 2 will be built, Jeff the dinosaur will be loved, by somebody, somewhere. hehe

Life's been good since Red Sonja got shafted, only got Crumb to go now. Someone needs to stop the payment of the other white elephant for Brizvegas. The paddle pop boys are in distress and going under as well. Hate to be doing the books this year.

So you believe the word of a guy(whose integrity s in shambles) who makes a generalisation, which many do when caught ,such as ET (in his extra curricular activities),as being holy writ. And President Assad states all the opposition are terrorists.Yep he would say that. That is not to say ,the odd rort never happens . Again show us that "NO"" salary cap investigations ,have been made since the major blow up. I believe Waldron as much as I believe Red Sonja " there will be no carbon tax whilst I am PM".

Funny the Storm were punished but kennedy's book proves with emails that the big 4 were getting side payments and they knew all about it and didn't have any punishment. I wonder how the players getting the minimum wage felt...BTW Bellamy claimed he knew nothing yet he didn't wonder how he had 9 internationals plus 2 SOO on his books in cold climate city away from the RL action.. On page 145 of the book Sullivan (Storm recruitment manager in 2007) in an email says "Craig is on my back every day about income and keeping players" - it is fanciful to think that the coach was unaware about planning to keep players - name me a club where a coach isn't in discussions about which player has to go and how useful they are and what $$ should be spent on them...

What do you mean robbing juniors? Look at Manly's top 25 and they would have about as many local juniors as any other club. Watmough and King come to mind. Add in all the players who were brought in to Manly through their U20 or reserve grade teams and it would be about the same as any other club. Funny, people wrote Manly off as being too old, too slow, past it back in 2011 and what happened? We won the comp. People wrote Manly off after the Des Hasler debacle at the end of 2011 and what happened? We made the prelims. It's not a free ride for f#$ks sake. It's professional sport. How many of Chelsea's players are local juniors? Barcelona's, North Qld Cowboys', the Roar, the Storm. You seem to keep pushing the notion that the NRL and the salary cap are to blame...well if you get a free market there will only be room for 17 Broncos players to take the field each Friday night. Those juniors who don't make it there because they're told they're not good enough (eg DCE, Ballin) will leave and play elsewhere. How do you not understand this? Funny how people also said after SBW left the game back in 2008, yep five years ago, that the game was going downhill and the only way to survive would be to cut Sydney clubs because the game can't grow in Sydney. Five years on and the game's surviving. Some Sydney clubs may end up relocating but there are bigger issues in the game than the number of Sydney clubs. Manly are a more established club than Brisbane, we've been around for 40 more years, you can't just say they should be tossed because there are other clubs nearby. Tradition and respect obviously mean nothing to you. Finally, if you're so smart and "the messenger" as you claim to be, why are you not working for the NRL? Why are you not a consultant or adviser? If you were good enough or you actually made sense maybe you would be. hehe. hehe hehe hehe. hehe.

Yes, every junior that the Broncos spend one cent on will be signed up to the Broncos, and if other clubs want them, they will have to pay a transfer fee or be on loan to that club for a year. This is the way it works overseas, so in the real world, this is the way it should work here. Tell me, why should the Broncos watch juniors go through our system only to come back and watch them beating us in another team, while our club struggles year after year. Only a fool would put up with that sort of treatment. Well the Broncos are obviously sick of being treated like fools by backward Sydney clubs that cant even keep their heads above water. The more money they throw at them, the more they beg. This is no way to run a professional comp, or do you think it is. ?? Not one Sydney club makes profits, and Manly never have and they have been at the top of the comp for 10 years. We cant keep propping Manly up, as we can all see, the code is going backwards, every paper, even the CEO has admitted this, and after a billion dollar deal. We wont get any more money if we are not showing progress. Good things happen to clubs who want to grow and provide world-class progress, the Broncos are doing this, leading by example, clubs that cant keep up should become feeder clubs.

Waldron's a rat, but he said repeatedly that virtually every other club was doing it. Yet nothing came of it. You don't have to find that interesting, but I do.

Oikee are you saying that every junior in the greater Brisbane/Gold Coast area will be signed up to the Broncos? If not then how is building an elite training centre going to stop rival clubs, eg Manly, from tempting players to sign with their club? The reality is that there are only a certain number of spots on each club's list, when that number has been met then they cannot sign anymore players, particularly with the salary cap in place. What this means is that the Broncos will need to become better at identifying the right talent, rather than let it walk out to other Clubs.
