Socceroos to face Canada in London next month

By News / Wire

The Socceroos have secured a match against Canada in London four days after playing France in Paris as they attempt to bounce back from their thrashing by Brazil.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) annnounced on Thursday that the Socceroos would play Canada at Fulham’s home ground, Craven Cottage, on Tuesday, October 15.

The friendly match was warmly welcomed by coach Holger Osieck, who needs all the match practice for his team after they were drubbed 6-0 by Brazil earlier this month while preparing for next year’s World Cup.

“The opportunity came up to play Canada on the second FIFA match date in October after we play France on the Friday evening in Paris,” said Osieck.

“For us it is important to play as many international matches as possible in the lead-up to the World Cup.”

Canada are ranked 91st in the world while the Socceroos are 53rd.

The Canadians failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup and have begun a rebuilding program under new coach and former Real Madrid manager Benito Floro.

The teams have met eight times previously, with Australia winning four times and drawing once.

Australia won the two most recent meetings – home and away – in 1993 during qualifying for the 1994 World Cup.

Why doesn't Josh Rose get a call up he's a specialist left back and is a player prepared to advance down the pitch and is somebody most supporters know of, Jackson Irvine form Kilmarnock "never heard of him and the mariners would beat them quite comfortably ". If I was Osieck I'd start using players who just simply play from the bench or otherwise in Germany then I would be looking in Holland and Belgium english football is the last place I would look for technical and astute footballers and the rest of the playing staff be Australian based footballers. Osieck needs to be very careful he could very well start the Fifa world cup finals in Brazil with only two omissions from his asian cup final defeat.

Interesting - very interesting. I have been a harsh critic of Carney but he has rocked up to New York after backpacking for 18 months and walked straight into the side with Timmy - which is more than Matt McKay has done Very happy to see the end of Cornflake too He wont pick Lowry or Macdonald for some reason - mind you Milwall are coming almost last and Lowry got sent off Very interesting which keeper starts Jackson Irvine and Leckie bolters

Holger won the gold cup with Canada at a time when the WC qualifiers were being played concurrently- most teams in the Gold Cup had their B team out - that's why Canada won and has done nothing since.

They probably look at Samuel Piette, 18 y.o warming the pine for Düsseldorf and think "This guy is going to take us to a world cup one day" much like we do with many of ours. Sad really.
