Jamal Idris released from Titans contract to join Panthers

By The Roar / Editor

The Gold Coast Titans have announced high-profile centre Jamal Idris has been released from his contract with immediate effect, opening the door for him to link with Penrith Panthers.

Titans CEO Graham Annesley said that the 23-year-old had been allowed allowed to walk out on his the remaining three years of his contract due to personal reasons.

We are dealing with people’s lives and at times, we have to put the best interests of people first,’’ said Annesley.

“Jamal has a really close relationship with his family and we respect his desire to spend more time with them in Sydney.

“Jamal has been great on and off the field during his time at the Titans and while we’re disappointed to see him go we fully understand and appreciate his personal circumstances.”

The move allows 29-year-old Panthers centre Brad Tighe to join the Gold Coast club on a two-year deal, also with immediate effect.

Idris joined the Titans for the 2011 season after a three-year with Canterbury Bulldogs in which he played 68 games and represented New South Wales in State of Origin.

But he played just 35 games in three seasons since his move north, with injury and a lack of form curtailing the powerful Idris’ effectiveness for the Titans.

Idris thanked the Titans for his release.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here at the Titans and I’m grateful that the club has favourably considered my request for a release,” said Idris.

“For personal reasons, I have decided it would be best to be closer to my family as my mum has been ill for the past year and it’s been difficult living interstate.

“I wish the club all the best and am looking forward to the opportunity with the Panthers.”

I wonder if Gust Gold poached him. Think the titans might have to get a new coach before they will go anywhere in the NRL the fellow has been there for too long

I remember the Canberra raider took pay cuts to stay together only for the salary cap auditor to find they cheated - still kept their premierships though..

No one's breaking a contract if both parties agree to changing the terms. Contracts are re-negotiated every day in every walk of like. To hold this situation up as some sort of poor role model to kids is flipping ridiculous. Idris' family is from Forster.

Hard to know..sounds like it was negotiated with both clubs. I think that's the best you can expect in this situation. I think the situation with players being sacked and picked up by other clubs is very unfair. There will always be broken contracts

I see your points above as well Eagle, but I am just sick of blokes committing and then leaving early for whatever reason. People have said above, and they are right, the old family card is being used a LOT these days. It is emotional blackmail to make the clubs out to be terrible if there is a spat over the release... With Idris, he is in Sydney every other week playing. I am sure the club would let him stay with his family as often as possible. From a fans perspective (not an Idris or Titans fan, just a regular fan) I am sick of these man/child things happening. How does a grown man get homesick? Bit harsh? Maybe...

Morning Muzz. Fair points mate. The breaking of contracts on compassionate grounds does appear to be creeping into the game. But remember a club has the right to reject the request and force the player to fulfil their contract. With DCE, if his mother (or another family member) was to fall gravely ill, and he requested a release to be closer to them, I would have no problem with it. I'm sure Manly would do their due diligence to ensure the story is correct, and then would weigh up the pros and cons of releasing him early. Remember both parties must agree to the release. In the Titans instance they would have seen the benefit of freeing up a huge amount of cap space for a guy who is yet to truly make his mark on the field. For DCE to get an early release from Manly the reason provided by his management team would have to be a pretty good one for Manly to even attend the meeting.

I respect your opinion EJ but clearly it isn't irrelevant to a lot of fans as you can see in this and other discussions on similar issues.. I also think that it's fair that some fans feel a little suspicious as we are starting to see a trend in the way players are using this loophole to break their contract. This suspicion discredits the game.... "Exactly what difference does it make to the fans lives?" How would you feel if DCE had to move to Brisbane in 2015 for family reasons and signed a deal with the Broncos worth more than double his current contract??? Some fans have their clubs name and player names tattooed on their body(write or wrong who are we to judge) so what you may find irrelevant and only worthy of gossip pages can be a big deal to others.......

Exactly what difference does it make to the fans lives? In either case the player leaves the club to take up a contract elsewhere. The reasoning is irrelevant and best read in the gossip pages. A club only wants to keep a player who is 100% committed to them. If their mind is elsewhere, and being a long distance from a sick relative will do that, then the club has the option to grant the requested release. Do you think these players like Milford and Idris are making up that their parents are ill? As was the case with the Raiders they refused to grant Milford a release. The Titans decided they were happy to do it. The exact reasons why, whether they saw a benefit to them or not, is irrelevant to the fans.

Glen-Not for moment am i suggesting that clubs or players be above the law.A NRL player should be free to play for as many teams or other codes as he likes IF he is a free agent OR the club gives him permission to play elsewhere.... Idris needs to uphold his end of the of the deal as does the club....If the club no longer see's the value in Idris(500k)and Idris is happy to play for another club then thats ok( BUT JUST SAY SO)..Stop treating the fans like mugs with the constant use of the get out of jail free sick family member card......

Pretty sure his sick mother lives in Western Sydney. Just because he grew up in Forster doesn't mean his immediate family remain there. As for your last comment on the cap. If a club only wants to pay a player $100k and he agrees to it, then there should be no problems. "Rating" a players worth, as the NRL did in relation to Folau, and hence why they lost him for good, would never work. Garnering 3rd party deals is a separate issue.

Scott do you know if players sponsorhip is capped, or any endorsments for that matter. So hypothetically if nike offered SBW $5 millon a year to wear nike footy boots, is that allowed under the current cap rules, or not.

Glenn U dont understand mate. A player gets paid a fee from the cap, then they can get 3rd party pay then they can get under the counter pay. I estimate that most clubs utilize the later by up to 25% of the cap. It is possible for any player to get $5m and go in the books as $500k. On Idris, the Panthers have a heap of centers and I see him playing in the forwards especially as they are down Manu. he has no hope of getting the right centre spot over Hayne but would be gr8 off the bench in Origin.

Seeing as the Titans hadn't fulfilled their end of the contract, my guess is that Idris could have simply walked out. But this way everyone gets what they want and the Titans save face.

Scott - You are worth what someone is willing tp pay you - the idea that we can have some sort of bureacracy that "values" the players is crazy - different clubs have different needs and you will always get disagremment on a players worth - even among the well informed. The current system is far from perfect but nothing ever is -we have neen learnibg that lesson ever since the French Revolution there are no utopias. The current cap system is ok - it muddles along and kind of does it job and in liife you can't expect much more than that and lots of unintended consequense arise when you do.

Agree with Turbo,Panthers just bought a ticket into the 8 and the Titans will be looking for a new coach by mid season..hugely damaging player both offensively and defensively who is just begging for direction on and off the field and I'd back Ivan C. to give him that..
