49ers fall short again

By Worlds Biggest / Roar Pro

For us 49ers fans, the NFC Championship game was a case of déjà vu. Another big game down to the wire and another agonising loss.

This was the 49ers third straight NFC Championship game under third year coach Jim Harbaugh.

In 2011 the post season was a welcome sight after an eight-year hiatus.

It was also when the heartbreak set in against the New York Giants.

The Niners were a muffed Kyle Williams punt from a trip to the Super Bowl.

Last season they went one better making it to the Big Dance. They were favourites to lift the Lombardi Trophy against the Baltimore Ravens.

After a disastrous first half the Niners made an incredible come back only to fall agonisingly short 34-31.

Fast forward to this season and the Niners were determined to go one better. However division rival Seattle Seahawks were the front runners all season.

San Francisco qualified as a wildcard and went on the road to qualify for the much anticipated NFC Championship Game.

This game had everything and once again another last minute 49ers attempt at an improbable win fell short. This loss stings, the 49ers played pretty well for three quarters and an upset was on the cards.

However the start of the fourth quarter saw the Hawks take the lead they would never relinquish. This coincided with Colin Kaepernick’s implosion turning it over three times in a 10-minute span. It was very tough to watch the game slip away.

Credit to the Hawks, they made some huge plays when it mattered and owned the fourth quarter.

The 49ers three post-season losses in the last three years have been by a combined 12 points. This is one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, laden with Pro Bowl and All Pro players.

I still think they have a window of one to two years to win that elusive ring.

However for this to happen quarterback Colin Kaepernick needs to improve his passing game, decision making in the pocket and game management.

I think next year could be make or break for this gifted yet raw talent if he is to be the franchise quarterback.

His coaches must simply get his game up to speed and improve their own short comings in crunch time scenarios on the biggest stage.

Kaepernick is a physical freak, has a cannon of an arm and incredible work ethic. However he must be viewed as a passer first and foremost.

The team also needs to address the secondary issues particularly at cornerback. A speed receiver would also be useful and re-signing veteran Anquan Boldin is a must.

However the 49ers quest for six will come down to the development/refinement of the most important position in all of sport, the quarterback.

49ers fans need to calm the F down. You have three deep play off runs. Sure it hurts now but the NFL in a one a done format is highly variable, all you can ope for is that your team is good enough to get a seat at the table next year which the 49ers should be. Football outsiders have the 49ers team had them as middle of the pack down by down defence that was trading on reputation more than results. They actually have their offence as a bigger contributor, on a down by down basis, to their success with their identity being based around what Kapernick can do. This is not a team that can put in a low risk low reward QB and suddenly start carving up the league. Especially not with Seattle in their division. I personally would love to see them marginalise Kap for a game manager QB as it would downgrade an elite team in the NFL and you wouldn’t need to worry about them anymore and then maybe the broncos could scoop up Kapernick to replace manning after next year.

Dare I say it, perhaps Alex Smith would have been a better fit? I would rate him a better pocket passer than Kap, and with some decent weapons like Crabtree, Boldin and Davis he would have plenty to work with. On the ground, they have Frank Gore and a good O line. Smith also isn't Brady or Manning, he cab run a bit, and he doesn't turn the ball over. With a great, they don't need to put up monster numbers offensively - see Trent Dilfer and the Ravens as an example, and Smith is far better than Dilfer.

Nice to have one, but I bet he wishes he were out there. As does all of Australia. Could be quite a historic moment, regardless. A Super Bowl winner (non-special teams) is one of the few frontiers that sport in our country hasn't yet conquered.

Back to back National Championships with Alabama followed by a potential Super Bowl ring for Williams.

My comments was in regard to his post play comments. It was great. Bitter sweet for Williams I guess.

It's not the play that is in question, it was a game saving play. If he doesn't get a hand to it Crabtree scores. It was his post game interview that has everyone talking. Jesse Williams has been on injured reserve all season. That said if the Hawks win the Super Bowl he will get a ring.

Not sure why people are having a go at Sherman. His play won the game (effectivly). Give him a break. Should be a good Superbowl. As an aside what's Jesse Williams up too?

Nice one Salada, Lynch at 12 for the Wallabies would be sensational, the guy runs through brick walls. It was a sensational play by Sherman however linebacker Malcolm Smith deserves plenty of credit for being on the spot to scoop up the ball.If he isn't there the game is still on. The Niners would have had about 15 seconds to get off a couple of more plays. I agree Kap should never have thrown that ball, it was a fourth down throw only. I still can't understand why they didn't make the underneath throws and pick up 5 or 6 yards to edge closer. Then bring in 6,5 Tight end Vance McDonald for a shot in the end zone.

Kap should never have thrown to anybody covered by Sherman. Loudmouth dope Sherman may be but he was the hero doing what he does best on the field. That was a great run by Kap in the 1st half. And speaking of ballrunners, I keep dreaming of Lynch moving to Oz and becoming the answer to the Wallaby 12 jersey.

I'll also add the Niners need to secure home field advantage for the playoffs. Kap did a nice job of protecting the ball for the first 3 quarters only to unravel at the worst possible time. Wilson stepped up when his team really needed him whereas Kap didn't. That might seem harsh for a guy who torched the Hawks on the ground however the reality is the Niners lost another huge game due to Kaps inneficiency in the passing game. The coaching staff must also share the blame in particular the last drive. Greg Roman has been mentioned as a possible head coach candidate, I'd be surprised if he get's a look in now. As I mentioned, I think next year " could " be boom or bust for Kap as the Niners starter. This might sound ridiculous given the success he has achieved in his short career. However with the amount of talent on the roster, Jed York and Trent Balke will soon run out of patience if definitive improvement is not seen next year with his passing game. Have to agree, this game demonstrated that Wilson is the better quarterback. As for Shermans comments, he was fired up obviously however it would have been better saved for Twitter imo. I think his outburst has just about ensured everyone outside of Seattle will be going for the Broncos.

Per Sportrac, Kaepernick has one year to run on his contract before he becomes a free agent. He's currently being paid less than two million bucks. Therefore, San Francisco need to decide if they resign him for QB starter money - lets start at $15m - or if they find someone else on short notice, thus either paying some Carson Palmer type starter QB money, or hoping a late-1st or worse pick works out. Nope, Kaepernick's getting paid. This means SF has to make sacrifices elsewhere in their roster. Todays NFL seems to be about swinging for the fences while you have your QB on his rookie contract.

Some very poor choices made by Kaepernick in the 2nd half. He's a huge threat as a Running Back but I think Wilson is the better Quarterback. There's a few people feeling sorry for Erin Andrews after Sherman's post-game rant. I certainly don't. Why do we think reporters grab athletes immediately after their event/performance? They are trying to catch them while they are still in ' the zone' and high on either the adrenaline rush of success or the walls that are in place in regular interviews have been destroyed by the crushing realisation of defeat. Her 'interview' has gone global and she handled herself rather well I thought. so she'll be more than okay with the tradeoff I feel. The 49ers v Seahawks rivalry just went up a whole nother notch! Broncos Offence v Seahawks Defence for the Ring?? Sounds mouthwatering. I'm glad I've got the day off to watch it without having to juggle work:)
