Gombau starting to stick it to his doubters

By Luke Paraman / Roar Rookie

After round seven, people were calling for Josep Gombau to be sacked.

Today his team sits third on the ladder and is a serious dark horse in the race for the ninth A-League championship.

Following a surge of good results, majority of Adelaide United fans are now starting to hail Josep Gombau as a genius tactician, a lot of these people the same fans who wanted him gone after it became evident to those who understand football realised that the blue print he had in store for United was not going to be created overnight.

His claim that Australians ‘do not understand football, only results’ was met with harsh criticism weeks ago that he was only concerned about his own job security rather than the state of the team.

Recent performances have seen Adelaide play some of the most devastating football seen in the competition this season and arguably over the short history of the competition.

One touch tika-taka football is now being successfully played and the depth of talent in the squad are now starting to gel. Players such as Fabio Ferreira and Marcelo Carrusca are now looking like one of the most dangerous attacking partnerships in the competition.

Adelaide’s playing style and current form now means they can go blow for blow with teams such as table-topping Brisbane as seen when they grabbed a last-gasp win over them a few weeks ago at Suncorp Stadium and has leapfrogged them into serious championship contention.

Gombau’s claim mentioned earlier about Australians only understanding results is incredibly true.

Himself being an example of it.

We witnessed Brisbane fans wanting Mike Mulvey sacked just a few games into his stint as Roar coach and how silly these fans look now with Roar setting the benchmark for the competition this season and showing glimpses of their championship-winning form from previous years.

Already fans have jumped on new Victory manager Kevin Muscat after a string of inconsistent results.

Despite sitting just four points off second place, comments of ‘Muscat out’ still litter social media when Victory do not get three points.

The same fans who wanted Muscat out after consecutive 5-0 drubbings in recent weeks were the same ones kissing his feet after a drought-breaking away win over the Mariners last weekend.

The Victory and United are both legitimate threats for the title yet they are only ever one loss away from the arm-chair know it alls being being on their backs yet again.

Patience is a skill that more A-League fans need to learn, believe it or not, you are not going to win every single week in a league that is evened with a salary cap.

Too late for this to be a valuable contribution, but I just clicked on the 3 links that langou provided. There's a few comments from a couple of Roar fans saying its a bad appointment. The rest are supportive or some Roar fans below haven't commented on those articles. Interesting the view taken by some that all Roar fans were bagging MM when the evidence suggests otherwise.

As we did in Brisbane throughout the Ange era and beyond, there's a lot of people in Adelaide who have learned a lot about football. There were clearly some Brisbane voices calling for Mulvey's sacking, but not many I'd say. He explained himself well and we could watch the game improve under him week by week, results or not. I just don't know why you've used the thrust of your article to also include Muscat. Muscat explained himself well too - he was to pick up Ange's system and keep implementing it. That was his stated vision. Now the team is playing much worse, with not merely no appearance of improvement, but no narrative at all attached to what they're *trying* to do. That is, the jury is genuinely still out on whether Muscat can coach at all. That was simply not the case ever for Ange, Mulvey or Gombau. Muscat, like Aloisi, is an 'old boy', somehow implicitly deserving of football employment after their career. Even the normally objective Foz continued to give Aloisi commentative support long after it was deserved. Both of these coaches - and I mean no disrespect to them - need a decent career path in coaching (assistants etc) before they take on a top level team. Anyway, some will have issues with the analysis in my last paragraph, but my main point is the journeys of these ex-players yet to prove themselves should not be mixed up with the Gombaus and Anges of the world - totally different issues involved.

Good to see another team playing around pro-active possession football! Its definately a work in progress and next season we will see how football should be played like. Would love Carrusca to stay as he brings quality on and off the ball!

Er, fair remarks re Kev, except he used the same tactics against Sydney the week AFTER he'd done the same against Wellington. But you're right, KM has some way to go before we can safely say he is a good coach, let alone one to fill the shoes of Ange.

1. Where has Jbinnie gone? 2. I noticed I never once had a bad word to say about MM! But it is interesting to read who said what then, and then now read their crap as if they've been behind the man the whole time. Don't appreciate all Roar fans being tainted with the same brush though QsAF! "All you Roar FC fans" was the wrong choice of words mate.

@Fuss---yes how hilarious it all sounds now. Not to mention one Roar poster now claiming it could've been all the assistant's fault... "Should Jeff Hopkins be uncertain about his future as well?"

@Kasey... yes, at this time last year Jeff Hopkins was part of the first team coaching staff. During the break between seasons, he was removed from the position and appointed Youth team coach. Personally I would've removed him from the club altogether, but that is my opinion.

Nice work, langou. Very interesting to review how people viewed Mulvey at the time of his appointment. My comment was: "I think Mulvey is a terrific coach, who needs to build a team to play his system." ... and, I was immediately chastised by a BRI fan for providing a positive review of Mulvey's coaching ability! Lots of very angry BriRoar fans at the time, who are now frantically trying to backtrack on what they said .. and wipe egg from their faces. :-D

QsAF, did you accidentally miss my comment from earlier this morning? I explained it as plain and simple as it deserved. That sign that was held up by "Roar Supporters" was by the RCC. Their views, although being "Roar Supporters," do not reflect and never have reflected the majority of Roar fans!

The key with Adelaide has been expectation management. From the beginning the public was told: (i) This is a long term project, one that will take several seasons (ii) The effect of changes on performances won't be seen until Christmas (iii) It will be a staged process with elements of the longer term plan being introduced one at a time The result was a largely sympathetic fan base that culminated in a public showing of support when the local media lost its nerve and attacked the coach.

I think we can safely say that realfootball got it wrong I cannot express my disappointment strongly enough. Yes, he talks well, but his coaching, if that’s what it can be called, is basketcase material. He has had plenty of rope to show what he can do, and just look at his record. And for this, he gets a 2 year contract? All he has proved is that he can’t do the job, and he’s proved that well beyond reasonable doubt. The Brisbane Roar supporters’ forum backlash against the appointment has been ferocious. Overwhelmingly against this absurd decision. Neither the club nor Mulvey can expect any largesse at all from the supporter base. He has very, very little to get it right, or we will be back to the darkest days 5k crowds at Suncorp."

@JohnL: I have looked through the comments on all 3 articles Iangou linked to and used the CTRL+F well, but I could only find one comment from you in the whole 3: It was asking "Should Jeff Hopkins be uncertain about his future as well?" I assume Hopkins is the Asst Coach? But nowhere did I find a comment even partly critical of Mulvey. I think QsAF is on another one of his BS crusades just like when we told him that GCU being dumped was good for the long-term health of the game/League and he spent months sailing on that river de Nile.

Well you didn't say you wanted him to stay on either did you? Your comment was clear enough for everyone to read---you were really wanting him to go. But you are right I should not have said "ALL" even tho I think the very vast majority of you believed he should have gone... Except for me of course, as I knew he was a fine coach and given the time he would prove it.

The best thing , or so I understood from earlier press, was gombau was building the team into a long term project. And without the faux modesty of mourinho... If the reds truly establish a Spanish flavour what a point of difference to other teams and philosophies... Will they be copied or imitated? Good to see the local games constantly reconstructing itself.
