Where is Australia's least successful sporting city?

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

Recently I was reading a sports blog based out of Cleveland, Ohio and they claimed in one recent post the following.

“Before yesterday’s Super Bowl win by the Seahawks, Seattle was the only city with teams in three of the major American sports leagues (MLB/NBA/NFL) that came close to Cleveland’s 49-year title drought, with 34 years since the SuperSonics’ NBA title in 1979.”

“Now the next closest are Oakland (A’s/Warriors/Raiders) at 24 years, and Minneapolis-St. Paul (Twins/Timberwolves/Vikings) at 22.

“Cleveland is lapping the field in sports futility now, by far. It’s as if this place is cursed or something,” it was said on Cleveland Frowns.com.

All of which made me wonder, what is Australia’s most futile sporting city?

Where in this grand country obsessed by sport does it suck the most to barrack for the local team(s)?

For the purposes of this piece not taking a week to research I am limiting myself to Australia’s most popularly attended professional male sports, cricket, Australian rules football, association football and both rugby codes.

Cricket (Sheffield Shield)
Queensland was famous when I was growing up for having never won the Shield (a drought of 60+ years) despite nurturing such talent as Craig McDermott, Carl Rackemann and Ian Healy. The Bulls finally broke through in 1994/95 under Stuart Law.

Since their breakthrough win, Queensland has enjoyed a golden era winning the competition a further six times (including three consecutive seasons from 1999/2000 to 2001/02) and also finishing as runners-up six times.

Their most recent title, a victory over the Tasmanian Tigers in 2011–12 saw the Bulls win by seven wickets in one of the most closely contested finals of recent times.

Since a final was introduced to the Sheffield Shield competition in the 1982/83 cricket season the Queensland Bulls have contested 18 out of 30 finals.

Since Tasmania was admitted in 1977/78, the Bulls have finished in sixth (i.e. last) just twice. NSW are a perennial powerhouse in cricket providing a lot of players for the Test team which necessitates the next level of players stepping up.

With the largest population, there is no lack of talent from which to back fill vacancies in the state team created by Test call-ups.

Australian Rules Football (VFL/AFL)
Mostly shrugging aside the supplements saga of 2013 like the Hulk in an Avengers movie, the AFL is the behemoth of Australian sport. It is not quite as big as the NFL is in the USA, but certainly the local leader in professionalism on and off the park.

A large part of this success is the draft and salary cap mechanisms that ensure fans of most clubs can hold on to hope that one year within their lifetimes, their club’s off-field staff will get it right with list management, coach appointment and fixture requests to raise the big trophy at the MCG in September.

That said, the AFL’s equalisation methods still haven’t been enough for one or two clubs (St.Kilda and Footscray) to break free of the malaise of mediocrity that seems to attract itself to these AFL teams like a Herald Sun reporter to rumours of a footy player’s misbehaviour.

Rugby League (NSWRL/NRL)
Devastated by the civil war of the mid-1990s Super League era, the confusion of two concurrent competitions still wasn’t enough for the hapless Cronulla Sharks to sneak up on the other teams and notch up a maiden premiership win.

And given Colin Barnett’s stance on the ocean’s apex predator, they ought to be thanking their lucky stars they never considered re-location South Melbourne Swans-Style to WA’s capital city.

Conclusion
There is no single place that harbours all of our terrible sports teams as Cleveland appears to be for America.

However we know that many sports fans follow a number of sports to give them a fix year-round. If you were a Sydney FC fan in the summer and a Cronulla Sharks fan in the winter you might wonder what you’d done to follow two clubs in such different leagues but both in disarray.

Down in Victoria if you were a Melbourne Heart fan in summer and a Bulldogs or Saints fan in the winter you would need a hardy constitution to continue to stump up your hard-earned for a membership season after season.

This is especially so considering Melbourne Heart have only qualified for the A-League finals once and the Saints continue to find new ways to self-destruct in Melbourne’s most popular sport.

In Adelaide I know from personal experience there are a number of Crows fans who follow Adelaide United in the summer. So nothing much to celebrate there for those folks.

In Brisbane they appear to have had a blessed run of sporting success in the early 2000s with wins in AFL footy [2003], Rugby [2011], the A-League [2011] and the dominant sport of rugby league [2006].

So what have I missed? Where is it hardest to be a sports fan in Australia?

A rugby league fan in South Australia who until recently couldn’t even watch State of Origin live at the same time as London, England could?

It can’t be easy being an Aussie Rules fan in Tasmania.

Tasmania is a state that loves the indigenous code and which sends senators/parliamentarians to lobby on its behalf for an AFL team only to see ‘the heathens’ of Western Sydney given a team they appear to neither want nor support.

I know it isn’t all beer and skittles being an Aussie rules fan in Adelaide despite the Adelaide Advertiser being mocked by some Port fans as the Crowvertiser.

The VFL expansion of the 80s and 90s has almost killed what was once a vibrant local footy comp and the vexing issue of AFL reserves teams in the SANFL has further diminished the lustre of that once proud competition.

The Suns have it in hand, instead of calling themselves an Australian rules football club as logic would suggest, they've lumped for the generic "football club". That way, they can play any code without having to change their letterhead, a significant leg-up.

According to Wikipedia (which is not always correct) Some of the events you state were 'Stolen' by Melbourne were first staged in Melbourne. Australian Grand Prix "it is generally accepted that the Australian Grand Prix began as the 100 Miles Road Race held at the original Phillip Island road circuit in 1928" Australian Tennis Open The Australian Open was first played at the Warehouseman's Cricket Ground in Melbourne in 1905. This facility is now known as the Albert Reserve Tennis Centre. In reality both these event were taken back to Melbourne where they belong.

All the big sporting events Melbourne has, (excepting the AFLGF and the Melbourne Cup), they stole from other cities. -The Australian Open started in Sydney in and was 'moved' to Melbourne in 1972. -Adelaide brought F1 Grand Prix racing back to Australia in 1985 and Melbourne pinched it in 1995. -Melbourne has reportedly been sniffing around Adelaide's World Tour Cycling Event, the Tour Down Under, obviously jealous of the European Media attention SA's capital gets during this wonderful event. -Melbourne seems to spend its time looking covetously at other cities, like Sydney trying to compare itself favorably even though Sydney smirks at Melbourne for the most part. classic insecurity complex from Melbourne;) Canberra is a 102 year monument to the inability of Melbourne and Sydney to agree on anything of major importance for the benefit of the country. Let us know when Melbourne creates something another city would want to steal. obviously the above post is mostly tongue in cheek;) 'mostly' :)

Apart from having the Australian Open, Pat Cash, Mark Philippoussis, John Fitzgerald, Paul McNamara, Paul McNamee, Anastasia Rodionovaetc etc, Melbourne has contibuted nothing to tennis.

I'd say Melbourne is the biggest loser. Contributes nothing to the following 1. Rugby League; 2. Rugby Union; 3. Football (last decent player Viduka (good lord)); 4. Cricket; 5. Swimming; 6. Tennis; 7. Field Hockey. These are 6 out of 7 of this countries favourite sports (and field hockey) and Melbourne contributes nothing.

no worries sportsfanmelb, and thanks for the info. As I said never been there and only hear about the GC when we talk sport or schoolies or bimbos etc ;). Am pretty sure the lifestyle is great though. Dunno much about afl, bit more about the Titans. Thing is I think any franchise based up there will always have the 'not so serious' tag attached to it. I also have the impression most locals aren't really locals (correct me if am wrong) and might have allegiances with other clubs in most sports no?

Kasey, nickoldschool - From a Titans point of view they had enormous fan fare when entering the league and played up the fact they were the new Qld team in town to take on the Broncos. They lost a lot of goodwill firstly when they were caught counting players, referees and ball kids as part of the official attendance and the biggest factor was all the tradespeople and various companies that were screwed over by the Titans Centre of Excellence. Add to this sub par seasons of late and the crowds go down I am afraid. The other hurdle they will face this year is a poor schedule in the opening of the season while the Broncos go prime time for 10 rounds straight. The Suns crowds are as low as they will get the past 3 seasons. They were belted pillar to post by many teams home and away and toward the end of last year showed improvement. They have a good draw for the teams they play at home this year, a great stadium deal, a team on the improve and the Gold Coast is a holiday destination for Vic, NSW and SA. Living on the GC you can see that it is a multi sport city and Aussie Rules is just getting bigger year on year.

Indeed If I wanted to hang out with drunken Aussie bogans, why would I bother with Bali, when the GC has no currency exchange issues, a health/Legal system I understand should things go a bit pear-shaped and is likely cheaper to get to.

How many professional sporting teams have died on the Gold Coast?? All those 80s incarnations of a RL team(Seagulls, Chargers) A-League Gold Coast United - although you could pin most of the blame on Clive Palmer I guess How are the Titans going? occasionally I see highlights on Fox Sports News and the stands are no longer jam-packed with fans that blue is something I got used to seeing in GCU games! ...has the gloss of the new toy worn off already? If RL cant make it work in Queensland of all places, the whole country might as well give up on GC I reckon. The Suns I guess are shielded from too big a fluctuation in crowds by their incredibly good stadium deal negotiated for them by the AFL. Even still, if their crowds fell away sharply, they might find it harder to attract sponsorship. They derive enormous benefit from being a great away trip for sun starved Victorians in the middle of Bleak-city's AFL season.

Not sure about Cronulla but from a Bulldogs perspective they have had periods of success without reaching the Grand Final. they played in a preliminary final in 1997 losing to the Crows and they were involved in 3 straight preliminary finals between 2007-2009. Unfortunately they were not able to capitalise on being around the mark and possibly just lacked a little bit of the quality that Geelong, Hawthorn and Collingwood had at those times. St Kilda is another who has gone through a period of remarkable success during the home and away season up until 2011 but they are now due for a spell in the lower reaches of the ladder.

If you are going to do this, it's probably unfair to group small cities like Newcastle with the capitals? If you're going to do that, it is still Gold Coast who compared to cities like Newcastle and Canberra, have never won anything. Of the major cities, it is tough to compare Sydney and Melbourne to the other three as they have some many clubs in so many sports, not to mention longer histories in most sports, like the Shield for example. Perth and Adelaide are amazingly close in most sports and are comparable in having no League teams and Perth's Union team having won nothing yet. Adelaide has 13 Shields, 3 AFL Premierships, 1 A-League Premiership and 4 NBL titles; Perth has 15 Shields, 3 AFL Premierships, 0 A-League Premierships and 5 NBL titles. I believe Perth had a few wins in the old NSL, I am not sure about Adelaide clubs. Perth also have a T20 title to their belts as well. Brisbane has 7 Shields, 3 AFL Premierships, 2 A-League Championship (1 Premiership), 3 NBL titles, but on top of this have 1 Super Rugby Title (several more when it was amateur) and also six (6) NRL titles. Brisbane also won a T20 title the other year as well. Being from Brisbane and therefore biased, I'd have to say that Adelaide appears to be the worst, with Perth having more NBL titles, more Shields and a T20 title, plus also supporting a Rugby team at the same time...
