Network Ten wants Super Rugby

By The Roar / Editor

Network Ten have their sights set on acquiring the rights to broadcast Super Rugby – a move that would see them put the sport back on free-to-air television.

In a bid to boost ratings, Ten have expressed an interest in expanding their rugby coverage. Currently the network has the rights to some international matches, but the addition of Super Rugby would be a big step forward.

The interest in a flagship winter sport has been spurred by the ratings success Ten experienced with the Big Bash League over the summer, during which matches averaged 638,000 viewers.

The network will be hoping to compete with the likes of Seven (AFL) and Nine (NRL), who currently dominate the winter sports market.

Ten executive chairman Hamish McLennan has stated, “Rugby needs to broaden and get into the mainstream to build its fan base.”

Many Super Rugby fans would agree that free-to-air coverage would be a big boost for the profile of the competition, which struggles to find the attention rival codes receive.

The accessibility of Super Rugby has been a hotly debated topic for some time, with many of the view that the competition must make the move to free-to-air.

A move to Network Ten would see Super Rugby broadcast on free-to-air in Australia for the first time since it was created in 1996.

Some of those Women's sevens games played at half time for some Waratahs matches have been great viewing.

Channel TEN desperately needs Super Rugby. Channel TEN's ratings were quite poor at the moment. As a Western Force Fan, I hope that TEN's ratings will increase. And Channel Ten desperately needs more sport like cricket.

Oh brilliant, Super Rugby in Standard definition with 15 ads after each try. The best thing about being a Raiders fan is they only show Raiders games on Foxtel.

Any publicity is good publicity. Go ten, just don't manipulate the games and treat us for fools as they do in Rugby League these day's. We have the Disney channel for that.

Yeah, but for how long? Reality shows get tired very quickly. With sport, say Super Rugby you get a lot of content over a large chunk of the ratings season. It will struggle to get a sizable audience in the southern states, but with clever scheduling this can be over come. What Foxtel is paying for the rights, they are just not worth persisting with any way you want to look at it. Better to put it on ONE.

Yeah Simoc agree, I didn't realise we were talking about a specific Murdoch in the talks, I was referring to Lachlan's ownership. Considering he is now non-exec co-chairman of the Murdoch empire perhaps he is the one to get this FTA/STV arrangement done

That would be the Lachlan variety, who has failed abysmally at One (10) which started out with sport and should have got better at it. But it chopped and changed without direction with the inherited out of his depth L. Murdoch. It did a great job at BBL and does well in F1. So we'll see Die Hard how much you know other than making up rumours. Murdoch, Packer, Rhinehart chucking in the towel and giving away inherited millions. Unlikely.

Why not, the fox ratings are strong, I"m sure 10 could build a good following.

You have to be wary of FTA as they pay peanuts for sub test Rugby. The Pro 12 is 100% FTA/Terrestrial in the UK and Ireland (Irish viewers have to have Sky or UPC to pick up the games played in the UK and broadcast by their channels) and the rights deal value is terrible. I know the comp doesn't have the same profile as Super Rugby but it's the same principle as it is on FTA/terrestrial to grow the sport. It can also effect crowds in the city that's hosting the match as it's broadcast live on tv. This has happened in Wales and on occasions in Munster. The crowds outside of Queensland are bad enough as it is particularly with the Brumbies who are getting low crowds despite winning the majority of their games. Pathetic crowd at the home final last year in the day time.

Well Ch 10's rugby coverage when they took the rights off the ABC was pretty comprehensive. They had the then 5 Nations, the odd game from the NPC, Super 10 so they have a history of some sort of televising Super Rugby and non Australian internationals. That level of extensive coverage was pretty good for its time as pay tv didn't exist in Australia back then.

Some womens internationals go on Sky in the UK and Ireland. A couple of the Irish girls 6 Nations games due to demand are televised on RTÉ. The ones that don't are on the radio. They played their first match at the Aviva Stadium on a Six Nations weekend this year.

Yeah, I don't the lack of coverage of AB v Springbok games... they're arguably the biggest rugby games of the year. I absolutely love them and never miss one. I also love England v All Blacks matches, and it seriously annoys me that setanta always seem to have the rights.

The big issue is will they show it nationwide and live? In Melbourne free to air rugby was not live, usually shown @ midnight often after some sad sack 30 year old movie, even when stations got a 2nd channel it didn't get shown live. I quite literally only pay for Foxtel for the rugby. if it was on free to air i could save some money - as long as it was hosted by Gordon Bray, he's unbearable!

It could be a goer. Apart from the Big Bash, MotoGP and Formula 1 Ten doesn't have much in the way of sports. In theory, both Seven and Nine should be ruled out owing to their AFL and NRL coverage. I do agree that to make it worthwhile, there must be SANZAR must keep up the number of Australian games to make their broadcasts worthwhile. Then hopefully slip into covering say the match of the day in the NRC.

Having a small amount of shares in ch 10 its great to hear positive things about ch 10 reading everything above is great feedback and better than what i read on share forums. My shares in ch 10 have gone down heape but i will stay in for the long haul . might even pick up a couple more with the price so low. Plus they have a partnership in this web site and others. cheers Trevor

I think Hopman Cup was only for this year and I can't find it anywhere that it was a multi year deal. Seven would share the AFL rights with Ten. Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is a possibility for Ten, 2016, 2018 and 2020 Olympic Games are all up for grabs but Ten should renew their Formula 1 and MotoGP contract. I think golf/tennis belong to 7.

That's interesting Albo. I think Freeview is probably enough for people who likes series, dramas, reality shows etc and for those ppl fox isn't anymore a necessity. On the other hand, for those (like me) who subscribed to Fox solely for the sports channels, FTA and their sister channels will never be the answer. I used to d a lot of streaming years ago but for me I still see it as a temporary solution if you're overseas or do not have access to TV.

I think this is a very good opportunity for Network Ten to screen the Super Rugby Tournament. Ten already has the Wallabies Rugby Union TV Rights as well as the Big Bash Cricket League & V8 Supercars TV Rights. Ten has lately missed out on the Melbourne Cup Spring Racing Carnival, Australian Open Tennis & Australian Masters Golf TV Rights & more recently The Hopman Cup Tennis, The U.S. Masters & Australian PGA Golf Tournaments & Seven might retain the AFL TV Rights or even Share the AFL TV Rights with Ten & Seven might also retain Wimbledon Tennis TV Rights. Now Ten must look to the TV Rights to the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race , the Australian Masters Golf & the 2016 Rio Olympics TV Rights which are all up for Grabs in 2015.
