The football action is flowing thick and fast through these bye rounds, and although the last round’s only been done and dusted for a couple of days, we’re back into it already with a Thursday night blockbuster.

Both teams are coming off the bye last weekend. For Adelaide, it’s been a long wait for redemption.

In their last start, nearly two weeks ago, the Crows were at home against a Melbourne side that’s been struggling for years. But, seemingly not switched on, the Crows were very poor in the first half, enabling the Demons to run out to a big lead. Although the Crows fought back late, the deficit was too big to reel in.

The loss sees the Crows languishing on 11th place on the ladder with some work to do if they are to avoid missing the top eight for the second year in a row.

The sight of thousands of Adelaide supporters heading for the exits early, as the players dropped their heads on the field, was the enduring image of an awful night for the crows. With the bye last weekend, they’ve had to wait a long time for a chance to put things right.

But the Crows will have some work to do. Their opponents, Collingwood, are on a high.

The Magpies are also coming off the bye, but will be hoping their momentum remains intact. They’ve won their last four on the trot, and at their last start were far too good for traditional rivals Carlton.

Blowing the insipid Blues out of the water, particularly during a devastating burst in the second and third quarters, the Magpies looked unstoppable. They led by 56-points at the last change, and if not for some inaccurate finishing, could have led by even more. Although the Blues got a few junk-time goals to peg the margin back, there was no disputing Collingwood’s superiority.

Flying high in 5th place, with a winning streak of four games, the Magpies have some real momentum behind them. Confidence is high, and they’ll be hard to stop.

The Crows have plenty of big names to watch tonight, none bigger than Patrick Dangerfield. His virtuoso masterclass against GWS a few weeks ago was something special; he’ll be keen to replicate that form against a big name opponent.

Gun midfielder, Scott Thompson, after an indifferent start to the year, is also starting to hit some good form.

First use of the ball is important, and Adelaide ruckman Sam Jacobs is among the best in the business. Up forward, the contribution of big name recruits James Podsiadly and Eddie Betts will be critical if the Crows are to get over the line.

There’s some good young talent making their way into the Adelaide side and Matt Crouch looks the pick of them. He’s another one to keep an eye on tonight.

There’s plenty of gun players to watch in the Collingwood side. Brownlow Medallist Dane Swan, his heavily tattooed arms standing out, is sure to pick up a huge stack of possessions. Alongside him in the midfield, captain Scott Pendlebury is another ball magnet that the Crows will have to work hard to keep quiet.

And even if those big names are kept quiet, the likes of Dayne Beams and Steele Sidebottom will still need to be kept under control – a task easier said than done!

Travis Cloke is an imposing figure up forward, and will attract the attention of the best Crow defenders. In defence, young Tom Langdon looks a star on the rise and will be looking to attract more of the ball as he continues his break-out year.

With the backdrop of a full house at the picturesque Adelaide Oval, a desperate home side coming up against a high-flying away team, this match has all the ingredients for an epic clash that could well prove crucial to in the race to the finals.

Join us live from 7:30pm (AEST) as we go through the evening’s action. Post your thoughts, observations and barracking below, as the ball is bounced and we get another sensational weekend of football action under way.

The Crowd Says:

Well, I think it adds to an attractive and entertaining viewer experience. Watching empty seats down the whole of the opposite wing, and hearing lone voices in the crowd makes a sporting telecast look rather amateurish. Put the identical game on in front of a large crowd making lots of noise, reacting to everything happening on the field, and it becomes a far more attractive proposition by that fact alone.

How exactly does a big crowd entice people to tune in? Are there breaking news spots on other channels to alert people to tune into the game immediately because a lot of people bought tickets? More likely it being the only game on and free to air it was always gonna get good ratings, people will have decided to watch or not watch long before knowing what some attendance figure was.

Big crowd = big event = big ratings. Couldn't agree more.

U bloody beauty Crows done the job last night, well done!! Even though they got off to slow start against Collingwood.. Crows where sloppy, & it's good to see Taylor Walker.. Forwards looking potentially dangerous last night unfortunately a lot of misses. See what happens now & rest of season, hopefully less injuries.. Go Crows!! By the way im very loyal crow & that won't change since been a fan since 1991..

What a biased lot of comments from crows fans , the turnovers were caused by bad errors from collingwood not the tight defense and collingwoods kicking out from goals deplorable.

The weekend results,if Freo and Gold Coast win by enough, will push Collingwood to 7th,with a game against 8th to follow. West Coast have the best defence,(72 points conceded with Geelong next best with 75 pts conceded), so it will a test of the Pies attack which is ranked 11th.And they'll be coming up against a team off the bye,(whether that matters or not, we'll see)

Good observation, hard to argue with this, it might be the way to go for the AFL. The byes give us a great opportunity to run a couple of consecutive weeks of Thursday night games (and once Vic cricket falls into line, the AFL will be able to extend the season and get to blocks of byes in, which the PA wants). I expect the ratings to be pretty good for tonight as well. It's a reminder to the AFL that big crowds encourage big ratings.

It will be a great day when the GWS fans fill their own AFL stadium with a crowd like that! I look forward to it. Shoudl have just said: best thing to happen in the AFL in 10 years.

There'll be plenty of controversy about the siren. Even though the game went off by 21 points, so it wasn't the sole determinant of the result, it was certainly a momentum shifter at a critical point in the game. For what it's worth, I think they got the call right and it was a goal; but this will be gone over in fine detail. But the Crows were magnificent through that second half, locking the high-flying Magpies out of the contest. Spurred on by an amazingly loud home crowd, it was a night to remember for the locals in the City of Churches. Thanks for joining us tonight on The Roar. There's some more great games coming up this weekend, and it'll be fascinating to see how the action unfolds. Good night everyone!!!

It's impressive. I was in Adelaide a few weeks ago when the Crows played GWS, and it was loud then. But tonight stepped it up another level.

You're not wrong Bogga about it being beneficial (although as a GWS fan I think the Giants in time will come to also be beneficial). It's just been an unbelievable success; and what a deafening roar from the crowd. The people of Adelaide have embraced this new-look stadium, and presented an atmosphere second to none in the AFL.
